It is an interview with only Matthiessen speaking. There are wonderful moments of revelation both of his life as an author and as a Zen student/teacher. Great insight! This is a good companion for those reading The Snow Leopard.

Title: Diary of a Barking Mad Dog Owner Author: Jackie McGuinness Narrator: Fenella Lee Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 17 mins Language: English Release date: 04-25-17 Publisher: M-Y Books Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: The hilarious adventures of a dog lover extraordinaire. This brilliant tale of life with all things dogs - especially Airedales - will transport you to a gentle, fun-loving universe where dog-driven disaster is only a short walk away. Due to his obsession with hedgehogs, Mr. Mac was walked on a leash in the garden first thing in the morning before the sun was up and as soon as it was dusk, when hedgehogs are likely to be around searching for food. Thus, you can imagine how mad I was when I arrived home from work on Friday, drove towards my gate, and saw this half-flat, spiky brown lump in the middle of the road."Arrrgggghhhh!" I shouted at it, "You stupid, stupid hedgehog!" I parked my car in the drive and stomped back up the road. I was still shaking my head and ranting, "How could you be so stupid? After my efforts to keep you safe all summer, you go and run out in front of a car in broad daylight." I reached the little spiky brown lump and stared at it as if I was hoping for an answer to my questions about its stupidity. Then a big smile spread across my face, and I looked around sheepishly, hoping that no one had witnessed or heard my outburst. The little spiky brown lump had been left on the road by a horse. Members Reviews: WONT STOP LAUGHING If you own dogs you will love this book. It will make you feel better about your own dogs, your training trials - failures and successes, your frustrations, and the ultimate joy dogs bring. This book will keep you smiling, laughing, and shaking your head all the way through. An easy simple read, a journal of dog ownership. But not just any dog, the king of terriers. The Airedale. this book could have been an account of my household and the joy of having Airedales in it Having had Airedales in my home for 21 years, this book could have been an account of my household and the joy of having Airedales in it. I laughed and cried my way through. I highly recommend this book for anyone that has, had, or is thinking of having an Airedale ( or more than one ) in their home. A must read for dog lovers! This book is pure delight. Jackie McGuinne has a gift for describing the reasons life with a terrier is merrier, well if you can handle living with a dog who is probably smarter then you. It's evident Jackie is wise enough to outsmart two Airedales and a Wild Welsh Terrier. I was crushed when the story ended, I sure hope another book is being crafted by now. Two Stars Rather on the amateurish side of writing. I LOVED it! Jackie has successfully captured the trials and triumphs of being owned by Terriers. Her book is a wonderful read and you will be sorry to reach the end! It's a geniune pleasure to read about the life experiences of a dedicated dog owner. I purchased copies for my friends!

Subtitle: And Other Catastrophes That Attack and Assault When Your Back Is Turned Author: Laverne H. Bardy Narrator: Candee Lewis Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 22 mins Language: English Release date: 12-14-15 Publisher: Ravenpheat Productions, LLC Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: How the (Bleep) Did I Get This Old? showcases the best of "Laverne's View," a humor column she began writing in 1999 that has been syndicated since 2004. The author returns to the single life after the breakup of a 21-year marriage. Men are older, but still motivated by the same primal urges, and four decades and three children later, she is still trying to preserve her virginity. Years bring bodily assaults, including cataracts, joint replacements, sagging boobs, and a dying libido. Bardy describes the virtues of growing up in the 40s and 50s when people survived bike riding without a helmet, driving without a seatbelt, and being flashed by men in trench coats without needing years of therapy. She curses her battle with weight, trading high heels for practical shoes, plastic key tags, never-ending junk mail, and packaging that requires iron hands and an act of congress to open. After 23 years of vowing never to remarry, she succumbs to the charms of a man she meets online. When he proposes, she suspects she must really love him because thoughts of marriage don't send her fleeing to the porcelain throne. Members Reviews: GREAT FUN Just finished reading Laverne H. Bardyâs riotous book, âHow the (Bleep) Did I Get This Old and loved it. As a person now in her 70âs, I relate to the title. As to the divorces and dating,Iâll have to enjoy her words from afar, as I have never been divorced. But, from what I know vicariously, her insights are filled with humorous truths. Iâm glad that after 23 years of being single again she remarries. I especially liked her battling her weight and wearing heels-something I never mastered well and am glad I'm now old enough to be off the hook. Like a best friend writing, her thoughts about life a treasure. Try it. Youâll like it. The Church Lady I've been reading "How the (Bleep) Did I Get This Old" on the go... as one can books like Laverne's, because of not needing continuity. So Sunday I had my daughter drive me the 25 miles (one way) to pick up an 83-year-old woman at a nursing home, so that I could read on the way. I read aloud. We both laughed. SO when I placed the church lady in the car, I asked her if she'd like to hear some funny stories. She agreed, so I proceeded to read to her for the 25 miles back to church. She giggled and even laughed out loud on occasion, which tickled me because she has an adorable laugh. After church, I walked with her arm-in-arm down the steps leading outside. One step at a time, creaking and wheezing all the way, then using her asthma inhaler at the bottom of the steps, the church lady leaned in to me and intimated, "Old Age is a Bitch, ain't it?" I hadn't realized just how much attention she had paid to my reading until after she'd caught her breath. This book is a must read. AND the print is rather large... so get one for yourself and all the older ladies in your life. You'll be their new BFF! Don't read this book IF ... Don't read this book IF: You have a small bladder because you won't stop laughing in time to ...

Or else she just makes one up. Contemplate Schrödinger's human head in your dryer or find a way to make peace with Barbie. A journalist and freelance writer in Charlotte, Jody has collected a dozen of her essays on family life that will have you thinking deeply and laughing heartily. Capturing the wry wit of these stories is Linda Velwest, whose characterizations and deft delivery let the humor percolate, and the poignancy leave you with a sigh. Linda has narrated short stories and novels from science fiction to romance, and even a couple of cookbooks. Members Reviews: Seeing Elves, Getting receipts, and dolls ... This book reminds us, as parents, to find the joys where we can, look for positivity in our children, and to embrace the moments and laughter as our children grow. Enjoyable to relax, listen, and reflect. The narrator sounded a bit nervous; her voice a bit quivery, but after a while it added to the wonderment. Great What wonderful stories! Made me see my parenting journey in a whole new light. I'm totally stealing the elf idea on our next long car ride. 'Watch Your Back Barbie' and More Stories This was a really fun book to listen to. I think that my favorite was when the author told the story of getting run over by a school bus. The best part of it was I didn't hear anything about politics! The narration was fun and upbeat, very engaging. I was hooked from the first story. I did speed up the narration to match the tempo of the stories. The portion called Watch Your Back Barbie was repeated. A quick clip from the editor/author will remedy. Warnings: Some strong language Overall 4 stars Story 4 stars Narration 4 stars *I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review. Grier unabashedly muses on politics, culture, and race while recounting his own life story in this edgy, timeless, hilarious, and revelatory memoir and look at all things Barack. Barack Like Me is David Alan Grier at his best - the man, comic, and 21st-century thinker - funny, brilliant, and original. Members Reviews: Barack Like Me audiobook Interesting audiobook about David Alan Grier's history as an African-American male growing up in America and his support and admiration of the president. ok ugh Five Stars Loved it Funny as all get out! A great and prolific look at our first black president from a humorous standpoint... I enjoyed this book. It is indeed funny. I appreciate it because it gives us a glimpse of the life of the author (David Alan Grier, the person growing up, through the adolescent eyes of the author, and its quite interesting how he bounces back and forth between significant events in his young life, to the time of election followed by preparation of the announcement of the first black president. Recommended! MC White said: Check it out!!! Easy Read David Alan Grier seems to feel that he's a funnier person than he really is. He was funny on "In Living Color" when others were writing for him. His short-lived "Chocolate News" had humor; however, he just couldn't "carry the whole show". He's definitely not a "one-man show" Comedian. I was somewhat disappointed in the book; however, I read it from cover-to-cover. I've passed it on to one of my sister's to read. She doesn't need to return it and I won't ask for it to be returned. I did not find his commetary on attending the Inauguration for President Obama humorous at all. It saddened me to think that this was the central theme of his book. Elizabeth C. Riley

The Longer You Live The Older You Get Audiobook by J. Michael Krivyanski

Title: The Longer You Live The Older You Get Subtitle: Baby Boomer Life Experiences Author: J. Michael Krivyanski Narrator: James H Kiser Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 55 mins Language: English Release date: 08-08-17 Publisher: J. Michael Krivyanski Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Baby Boomers experienced a world growing up that is very different from the one we live in today. Some say it's better, and some say it's worse. We can all agree it's very different. These are humor columns about being a Baby Boomer. Baby Boomers came of age in a time when there were water fountains instead of hydration stations. Our childhood was filled with playing outside. When we were forced to stay inside it was tantamount to being punished. We spoke to people in person and understood body language. There was no cyber world. We all had to learn how to deal with reality. There were no computer games. There were pick-up sports based on who had a baseball, football, basketball, or other sports equipment. Playing a game depended on if the sports equipment owners were willing to share. Card games were played with real cards. We camped out without adults, went on bike hikes, swam in creeks, and more. Now we're middle age or older. Our bodies are changing, and the world around us continues to make less and less sense. This book is about the many common things experienced by Baby Boomers. Just like the song from the group The Who, I'm "talkin' 'bout my generation". Members Reviews: A great book for people in their fifties There were so many laugh out loud moments in this book I lost count! A great book for people in their fifties, or for those of you younguns that always hear the same things from us oldsters: "When I was your age..." Mr. Krivyanski weaves tender moments and truth into hilarious little tales guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Not funny at all I'm guessing his mom or wife told this guy he was funny. THEY LIED. Supposed he writes for newspapers, that is probably why they are dying out. Least funny thing I have read in a LONG time. (And yes, I am a Baby Boomer.)

Now, for the first time, he's compiled his thoughts on those silly, serious, and sappy moments in one place. Daddies Shouldn't Breakdance takes us on a highly entertaining tour of the high points in Mak's life: his first day on the planet (what kind of monster would give birth to a child two days before Christmas?), his exploits as a secret young superhero, his experiences as a father raising charming but rambunctious daughters, and more. Mak packs in the laughs but also makes room for solemn and poignant observations about the state of the world and the difficult times his own family has experienced. Mak's daughters, Riley and Roz, star not only in some of his stellar stories and sweet poems but also in their own section dedicated to their observations about life. Daddies Shouldn't Breakdance is perfect for the breakdancing fathers of the world who follow their dreams, even when those dreams are embarrassing and based on an obsessive knowledge of '80s dance movies! Hot Houseboy Love What did you like best about this story? The humor Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry? It made me laugh while listening to it. Any additional comments? Worth a credit for sure. Good funny short listen Ridiculously Funny! So this book is a stretch of your imagination(fantasies). It is crazy funny (although I think the author is in the process of honing this humor as some chapters were spot on and others seem 'in progress'). Comedy is so difficult to convey, but this narrator, Kate Warner, with her dry, deadpan delivery Nails It! I enjoyed these somewhat bizarre stories immensely and I think other readers will too! Excellent Narration I listened to this as a free book on Audible. This is a quirky book. There are a lot of funny one liners, but I found it very disjointed. The narrator was excellent, but I felt the book itself needed more substance.

It's Not Mean If It's True Audiobook by Michael Thomas Ford

Title: It's Not Mean If It's True Subtitle: More Trials from My Queer Life Author: Michael Thomas Ford Narrator: John Detty Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 25 mins Language: English Release date: 01-16-17 Publisher: Lethe Press Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: The author of Alec Baldwin Doesn't Love Me and That's Mr. Faggot to You returns with more skewed observations on the strange state of the queer union. As fans of his previous collections have happily discovered, little escapes his attention, and no topic is too controversial or sacred to be tackled. "The Condensed History of Gay Pride" is enough to send any politically correct gay leader shrieking into the streets. But Ford's favorite target remains himself. The fact that Cher's butt is more famous than he is really irks him, and he is willing to pretend to be straight in order to get help while shopping for clothes. He murdered his rival's "egg baby" in high school to secure a good grade, and he sacrificed his own to a chocolate cake. Whether he is equating becoming a man with buying a barbecue in the very moving "Rite of Passage" or considering the state of parenthood in the unforgettable "Cheaper by the Dozen", Ford continues to observe life in ways that help us more closely observe ourselves - while never, never forgetting to make us laugh. Members Reviews: Best Of The Lot Michael Thomas Ford has a knack for seeing everday 'gay' matters in a completely different and skewed light. He is a strong match for anything David Sedaris has completed to date. This collection of short stories covers a wide range of subjects and territories and always manages to bring a chuckle. Remarkably, this is the kind of book that does not necessarily appeal only to gays, and in that, makes it unique. This is the best of his collections, so far, but I wouldn't discount anything he has written. He is just too much fun! True to Life Funny! Michael Ford knows how to put into words what we as gay or queer people are really feeling and he does it in a very amusing way. He tells the truth about gay people. You won't find too much PC here. And that's a welcome relief. Michael may sound grumpy at times, in fact he's grumpy a lot, but it's in a loving & funny way. I loved this book, especially the chapters: "If the Shoe Fits" about Milton Berle & RuPaul and "Why Am I Queer" where he states as his closing statement, "What matters is being who we are, and not what someone else wants us to be." That says it all. If you want a good laugh make sure you read this book, and you don't have to be gay (queer) to enjoy it either. There's no topic that's too controversial for Michael, and sooner or later he talks about it. Enjoyable & Very Funny. Five Stars all time favorite authors Michael Thomas Ford is hysterical... Many people don't like his sharp, cynical humor. However, living in NYC, I can totally appreciate it. His short stories are things a gay-sitcom could be made out of, but only he's even funnier. An easy, quick read of short stories (perfect for mass-transit), and A GREAT GIFT idea for your "queer" friends. Funny but rather typical There were some mildly funny parts to this collection of thoughts and essays, but I have to admit, some points seemed like typical city gay humor and bitchy retorts. The only part that stands out for me as funny is he recounting of gay history since ancient times.

The World's Worst Backpacker Audiobook by Ken La Salle

Title: The World's Worst Backpacker Author: Ken La Salle Narrator: Ken La Salle Format: Original Recording Length: 3 hrs and 4 mins Language: English Release date: 06-20-16 Publisher: Ken La Salle Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: "Most people land on their feet. I land on my face." And with that Ken La Salle begins his second autobiographical monologue. But while That Olympic Peninsula Layby put two people at odds with each other, Ken is The World's Worst Backpacker all by himself. From the encroaching urbanity of Irvine Park in Southern California to the remote thoroughfare that is the Pacific Crest Trail, decades of disastrous treks should have given him a clue. They didn't. All of those disasters stayed with him. And now, with his tongue planted in a very dry cheek (possibly his own), he shares them with you. The World's Worst Backpacker is for anyone who has gone on a day hike, picked up a backpack, or walked for a few days in the middle of nowhere. Ken's stories are not just cautionary tales; they're the kind of tales all backpackers (and would-be backpackers) acquire if they don't stop soon enough. They're the kind of tales that leave you wondering, "Am I the worst person at this?" when you start and thankful you're not when the story ends. With music by Josh Woodward, Ken tears the stigma off being the worst. Now you can be, too! After all, we can't all be the best, but we can be the worst.

The days are slow, and everyone wants to chat. From stripper problems to swingers' parties to blood wrestling and correct thong sizes, at The Club there's never a dull moment. The characters are real, and the true stories are stranger than fiction. Grab a beer, and settle down for the humorous and shocking tales of a strip club bartender. Members Reviews: Strictly Titillation I was hoping for something with humorous insight like "True Porn Stories" by Ali Davis. I should have paid more attention to the "People who bought this also bought" panel with "Rett" Mason and his insatiable appetite or "Dray" with his broken heart and extreme fighting skills. This is just sexy girls talking dirty while the narrator wipes the bar and tugs on her bra straps. It was in the humor/memoir section--that is my only defense.

Author: Dom Joly Narrator: Dom Joly Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 42 mins Language: English Release date: 12-20-11 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 7 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: At last in audio - Dom Joly's no holds barred autobiography of a man with the ego of Napoleon and the talent of Darren Day with a brand new exclusive introduction. Dom Joly reveals how he murdered his Armenian nanny before his second birthday, how as a student he inadvertently gave Kurt Cobain the inspiration for 'Smells like Teen Spirit', how as a producer for ITN he mistook John Major for a large lizard, and how after being raped by a TV weathergirl the scandal was hushed up and Trigger Happy TV was born. Dom Joly promises many other sensational revelations involving fellow celebrities including Vanessa Feltz, Peter Mandelson and Uday Hussein and many others yet to be identified. Critic Reviews: "Joly serves up a narrative of the bizarre and improbably... Brutal electrocution of a nanny, a fling with Nigel from Turkmenistan and a stint at MI6 rouse laughs aplenty." (The Observer) "If you thought Trigger Happy TV was well-observed, youll discover it merely scratched the surface." (Heat) "The bastard offspring of Spike Miligan and Baron Munchhausen, it is deeply strange and very funny." (Sunday Times) Members Reviews: Hmmm Disappointing What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you? As an autobiography, it is hard to tell what is wild fiction from the fact. There are bits that are laugh-out-loud funny, but I felt it turned vexing and turned readers off the main character by the end. What could Dom Joly have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you? It felt rushed at the end, it skipped large sections of time, brushed over developments so you started to feel disconnected from the subject. Felt quite 'quick quick, high and mighty' in the end which, if it were meant to in an amusing way, failed to set the scene enough to let the readers in on joke. Instead, alienated and quiet turned me off wanting to support any further work. Would you listen to another book narrated by Dom Joly? I was excited to see so many audio books available but after listening to this one, my opinion so lowered, no, I will no pay to listen to another and dont think I will look at his work in the same light again. No, Dom. Thoroughly enjoyed both of Joly's travel books and assumed his autobiography would be a companion for them. Too clever and sweary by half. Shame, should be an interesting story. Very lol People looking at me strangely as I laugh out loud while listening to this audio book in public... laugh out loud funny ! I beleive that in the Doms world, this actually happened. it didn't and I praise God for giving this man creativity. What a big disappointment ! If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more? After listening to both of Dom Joly's other books which were both excellent, I had high hopes for this one. Sadly I was very disappointed, whilst Doms narration was very good, the story I found very lack lustre. I was not gripped at all by this book. and did not find this funny at all.

Welcome to the wrong side of 25. The expiration date on your eggs is officially in sight. Tick tock. Love, Mom.'' This was the text message Kate Friedman woke up to on the morning of her 26th birthday, but her mother's maternal adoration and helicopter parenting began while Kate was still in utero. Never shy about pushing her only daughter to study harder, to dump her loser boyfriends, to move to 'less rapey' neighbourhoods, Kate's mum has given some truly hilarious but often sage advice over the years. It wasn't until Kate began sharing her mother's messages online that she realized quite how many people would find her mother as hysterical as she does. Over 700,000 people follow @CrazyJewishMom on Instagram, and this side-splittingly funny mother-daughter duo has been featured in media around the world. From taking Kate to buy her first bra at a speciality drag-queen shop to stalking a Princeton admissions officer across state lines to posing as her daughter on multiple dating sites, Mother, Can You Not? is Kate's brilliantly funny and affectionate story of life with her fabulous, eccentric mother. My Name Is on My Shirt Subtitle: Witty Reflections of a Blue Collar Factory Worker Author: Jake Clifty Narrator: Jake Clifty Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 4 mins Language: English Release date: 01-18-17 Publisher: Jake Clifty Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Ever wonder what goes on in the life of a factory worker? After 18 years of working in a field that I had no intention of toiling in, I have decided it is time to share my experiences with others. I am coming to the table to share tales that are too rich to be simply forgotten. If you are looking to be impressed with superb plots and subplots, you won't find it here. I'm simply telling stories that are conjured up from my years of experience wearing a blue collar. The message of the book, in humorous terms, is that everyone is interesting if you can get to their story. We will take a look at things like herpetophobia (fear of snakes), extreme boredom, and all sorts of things encountered when working around other people in close proximity. This is not a long book, and I have chosen to price it with this in mind (How's that for being blunt?). Members Reviews: Witty indeed! Throughout the course of this admittedly brief book, I laughed out loud several times. Alone. It is very hard to get me to do that. There are many poignant word pictures painted that communicate ideas in a very amusing manner. It is written in a style reminiscent of Patrick McManus, and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good laugh. Five Stars Great book! Fascinating and hilarious look into the life of a factory worker. Worth the read.

Title: Joyce Grenfell Requests the Pleasure Author: Joyce Grenfell Narrator: Joyce Grenfell Format: Original Recording Length: 3 hrs and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 04-26-06 Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: As she tells the story of her long and varied career, Joyce sketches wonderful comic descriptions of the many people encountered along the way. Her glamorous and madcap American mother, her aunt Nancy Astor, and her beloved husband Reggie are just some of the larger-than-life characters that people this captivating reading. Members Reviews: A delight from beginning to end! Ms Grenfell narrates her own life story in this utterly charming Audible book. Written with great skill & self-deprecating humour, we join Ms Grenfell's journey through her early years which were dominated by the eccentric personality of her American mother. Throw in her Waldorf & Astor cousins, add her very English father and her brother & we have a fascinating listen ahead. This is a truly charming book filled with wonderful anecdotes of theatre life. I highly recommend this book. Lovely Such a warm and funny woman. A great tale told with liveliness and humour. Joyce is a joy to listen to. What a lovely story of her life. Her insight on her watching and listening in her early life has given her a wonderful basis for her monologues and songs. The introductory song on this book makes you want to dance, it is a waltz, with happiness. The words are lovely. I am just sorry I never saw her live. Pure nostalgia Most people who have heard of Joyce Grenfell know her from the old St Trinians films or the George, don't do that' nursery sketches. There is so much more as this memoir read by the author herself demonstrates. Joyce entertains with reminiscences of her Southern belle mother, Nancy Astor as an aunt, life between the wars, war time tours entertaining the groups and musical reviews. She has a real gift for storytelling.

There've been late night chat room experiments, sexting from a Nokia and dubious webcam exchanges. And let's not forget catfishing, MSN, digital friendships and #feminism. She was basically social networking way before it was a thing - and she's even made a successful career from it. Ctrl Alt Delete is Emma's painfully funny and timely memoir, in which she aims to bring a little hope to anybody who has played out a significant part of their life online. Her confessions, revelations and honesty may even make you log off social media (at least for an hour). Members Reviews: Was looking for Internet encouragement Thanks Emma for being the metaphorical hug of "Its ok to fear feeling vulnerable on the Internet, eagerly embracing its many good things". I never thought I would finish the book feeling so good about me and will slowly venture into the social media the Internet offers. Thanks for sharing with me such a fun journey. It has it's moments. I bought this for the Mrs to listen to but ended up having a sneak preview and listening to it all. Funny in parts, though provoking and interesting for the remainder.

Whether you're trying to get a little funnier, on stage or in daily life, or if you're just curious about humor and laughter, which are universal human traits that have so far remained unexplained, this book will provide insights not only on how and why we laugh, but on how we relate. Written to be accessible by comedians and audiences alike, this book is for anyone who likes to laugh. Which is everyone, isn't it? Members Reviews: Made me think about humor in a very different way Despite its somewhat un-polished cover, this book does a very interesting job of exploring humor. It looks at the origins, functions and manipulations of humor and does so in a unique style that mixes academic level discussions with lighthearted jokes. It's a little bit on the long side but overall had enough meaningful content to justify it (although some chapters could probably be omitted for the sake of brevity). why things are funny, and how comedy works Fascinating mix of science, memoir, and analysis of the ineffable: what humour is, why things are funny, and how comedy works.

Bob Servant: Hero of Dundee Audiobook by Neil Forsyth

Title: Bob Servant: Hero of Dundee Author: Neil Forsyth Narrator: Cameron Stewart Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 57 mins Language: English Release date: 05-01-12 Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Cyber hero Bob Servant became a cult classic in the best-selling Delete This At Your Peril. Now this much-anticipated sequel tells the life story of one of Scotland's unsung heroes. From his days in the Merchant Navy to his creation of a window-cleaning round and his time as a cheeseburger magnate, Bob Servant has lived life to its fullest. With touching bravery, he takes the listener on a fearless romp through the hilarious, whimsical and impassioned memories that surely make him the undisputed Hero of Dundee. Members Reviews: IN AND AROUND DUNDEE Bob Servant showed up on the block first as the Scourge of the Spammers in `Delete This At Your Peril'. He was a hit, and he deserved to be as he would tell you himself. He even got his own show on the BBC, and now here he is telling us his life story by popular demand from The Boy Forsyth who has kindly edited Bob's outpourings, which are thankfully in standard English and nothing if not articulate whatever their occasional lapses. Scottish writers tend to show a fascination, maybe even a fixation, with their native cities. Just look at the number of Glasgow-based thrillers there are these days, or, say, Iain Banks's The Crow Road, let alone the Rebus books. When I read Delete This At Your Peril it seemed to me that Dundee was almost as much of a focus of attention as our hero Bob was, and I feel it even more strongly this time in Bob's apologia pro vita sua. Myself, I have never actually been there, but by the end of this (quite short) book I was beginning to think I knew Broughty Ferry, Monifieth and other spots like the back of my hand. Scottish cities generate their own `culture' (for want of a better term) and the local idea of humour can actually be very funny if someone is smart enough at it, and if you are not too fussy about what is commonly thought to be good taste, say in connexion with someone's mother's death. Another characteristic is tribal rivalries, sometimes religious or centred round football teams (the two come to much the same thing), but sometimes simply a matter of localities. One of the most hilarious episodes of Bob's career was a trip across the Tay Bridge to the Kingdom of Fife, which I knew very well as a boy. Given what happens here, I guess I was probably lucky not to have made the reverse trip in my tender years. Fife comes and goes in a page or two, the rest is all in and around Dundee. That phrase, ordinary though it is, comes from the only other literary reference to Dundee that I can recall, McGonagall's poem beginning `Alas Lord and Lady Dalhousie are dead and buried at last, Which causes many people to feel a little downcast.' Between them Bob Servant and Neil Forsyth may at last be giving Dundee its place in the sun, if not quite in The Sun. Neil is a journalist himself, so it is not surprising that he has such a good ear for the style of local newspaper headlines (as well as for earnest academic writing, I ought to say), so make sure you read the footnotes, as these are by and large the funniest and cleverest things in a very funny and very clever book. I could go on picking out plums, but the book is short, it is very readable indeed, so read it for yourself. If I have a favourite episode, it is maybe the fate of Father O'Neill, whose deeply ingrained faith fails to survive a few days' acquaintance with Bob's rapier-like insights.

Mark Vincent Lincir is also the author of The Gift of Stoppage Time and The World Needs More Belly Rubs. Members Reviews: "Let it go...let the kids play, Because their childhood won't come to live another day" Enjoyable, homespun account of a man's 30+ years experience surrounding soccer that reminds me of the experiences our own family had with our younger daughter playing the game. Photos provided of his time as a youth sure brought back the memories. I'll leave you with one last passage that caught my attention, "Do the best you can day in and day out, Loving the game is what it's all about." Fun but soooo short. I love soccer and really wanted to love this book. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy reading it. It was just so short and the stories didn't seem to go anywhere. This guy has played professionally and even met some great folks. But the stories just didn't seem all that book-worthy. I know the author has written a lot about soccer over the years- perhaps some stories from interviews of players, or some other interesting stories like that. The poems in between the anecdotes were also a bit jarring. I humbly consider myself a bit of a poet, even contributing soccer poetry to a sports blog, so I appreciate sports poetry, particularly about soccer. But it seemed somewhat juvenile and out of place. I liked this book, I read it in about 30 minutes. But I felt like I wanted more. Easy, fun, must read for all sport lovers....especially soccer :) Before Mark and I started coaching together I thought my soccer days were over. Playing rec, club, high school, and college were enough for me. I didn't care if I ever touched a soccer ball again! He has helped me fall in love with the sport all over again. This easy to read, collection of short stories, poems, and hilarious pictures provide a positive and fun filled trip down memory lane. After reading A Soccer Life in Shorts, I realized all my experiences where truely unique and amazing, no matter the end result. Soccer has shaped my life and who I am today, thanks for the trip down memory lane. I look forward to the many more soccer memories as I move from a player to a coach and I especially look forward to the next collection of short stories/poems/PICTURES from the career and life of Mark Vincent Lincir. So True! Enjoyed the book but I wanted to read more. I thought it was longer than it actually was. Written from the heart of a true soccer player. Soccor Life This books gets to the heart of what it is to be an aspiring athlete. It explores the good the bad, the embarrassing and the successes. You don't have to be a soccer player to enjoy this book, just an American kid growing up with the love of sports. I really enjoyed this easy reading enjoyable book.

Title: S'Mother Subtitle: The Story of a Man, His Mom, and the Thousands of Altogether Insane Letters She's Mailed Him Author: Adam Chester Narrator: Adam & Joan Chester Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 27 mins Language: English Release date: 06-16-11 Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 23 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: S'Mother is a hilarious memoir based on 30 years of unsolicited advice, news updates, and opinions in the form of thousands of inappropriate, embarrassing, and utterly crazy letters showing the pathological extremes maternal instincts can take. Why is a grown woman so frantic that her adult son screw on his windows to keep out killer bees? Are adult trick-or-treaters really that much of a threat? Adam saved his mom's letters as proof this all happened and reproduces many of them in the book. And now, with time, perspective, and plenty of therapy, he acknowledges and accepts the comedy of it all and is proud to share his story with you, if for no other reason than to make you feel better about your own mother. Members Reviews: likely going to get a letter for not liking this Would you try another book from Adam Chester and/or Adam & Joan Chester? I didn't mind his mom reading but I really didn't like the way the book was written. He sounded ridiculous and he kept adding stupid production tricks to make it more interesting instead of writing better Has S'Mother turned you off from other books in this genre? It is not a great representation of the genre. There are so many great comedy biographies and unfortunately this should have stayed as a blog What didnt you like about Adam & Joan Chesters performance? It was corny. The story didn't flow nicely and he was more focussed on vilifying his mother than making an interesting story. What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? It mostly disappointed me. Crazy moms are usually hilarious but this book felt like it was a great Twitter feed that should have kept to the 140 character format. The book had good bones but horrible follow through She's Funny; His Commentary not so much ... Would you try another book from Adam Chester and/or Adam & Joan Chester? No. Would you recommend S'Mother to your friends? Why or why not? Yes and no. There is no doubt that Mrs. C is certifiable. Honestly, the humor of her letters could have stood on their own. Which is probably a disappointment to both Adam and Mrs. C. Him because his mother actually outshines him (sorry!). And her because she never intended for her letters to be funny. What does Adam & Joan Chester bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book? The audio version is probably better than the written version because she actually reads her insane letters herself. The fact that she's willing to repeat her words and probably still stands by them (Adam - when WAS the last time you got a tetanus shot?) makes it even more hysterical. Mrs. C - you can stop buying traveler's insurance. It's another scam. I heard about it on CNN. Could you see S'Mother being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be? I think it already was. It was called, "Everybody Loves Raymond." Make it stop!! (the whining by the author) I bought this to listen to one a two hour drive. I kept thinking it has to get better, but at the end of the drive I was happy to turn it off with no intention of finishing it. Two hours of this guy going on about how horrible he mom is was more than enough. He continually tells us how crazy she is, but he didn't prove that to me.

From the Deep South to the Wild West, from Elvis' birthplace through to Custer's Last Stand, Bryson visits places he re-named Dullard, Coma, and Doldrum (so the residents don't sue or come after him with baseball bats). But his hopes of finding the American dream end in a nightmare of greed, ignorance, and pollution. This is a wickedly witty and savagely funny assessment of a country lost to itself, and to him. Travel through small-town America with Kerry Shale's popular BBC Radio 4 reading of Bill Bryson's comic travelogue. Critic Reviews: "Hilarious....He can be suave, sarcastic and very funny..not your typical travel writer." (Sunday Telegraph) Members Reviews: ICK! I love Bill Bryson's work. Always warm, with a good bit of humor. Listening to his work is always a pleasure with his unique drawl. THIS READING IS TERRIBLE! The reader on this book is NOT Bryson. He reminds me of the old Fed Ex guy talking so fast as if he can't wait to get it over with. His voice is full of anger and impatience. Every time the reader "does a voice" it sounds like everybody is from the deep south (hint... Des Moines Iowa is in the midwest). I regret wasting space on my iPod for this pathetic reading. Download any other Bryson work and you'll love it, but avoid this one! An awful reading of this book Unlike all the other Bill Bryson books offered by Audible, this book is NOT read by the author. I have downloaded every other book here, but will avoid this one. Just click on "Hear Sample". This reader appears to be in a real hurry to finish the book! I was look forward to adding this audio book to my collection, but will read it myself in good old paper format. Kerry Shales is the best This is the only Bill Bryson book I can find here read by Kerry Shales. When I Was younger we used to listen to Bryson in the car - and all were read by Kerry Shales. His delivery, and his character voices are superb and really make me laugh and listen. I haven't listened to the other narrator but I'm worried it won't live up to the superb Shales. Audible PLEASE FIND THE OTHER BOOKS HE'S NARRATED! Blast from the past I remember listening to this with my mum when we were on a long car journey, and for some strange reason I tried to find it, I had given up until I thought I would try the previews, and there was Kerry Shale's familiar voice!! Kerry Shale is a great narrator, and could make the phonebook sound funny, so added to Bill Bryson' s wit it makes a good 2 hours pastime! Fabulous Have read this book, twice. It is excellent. All his books at. A walk in the woods, is my favourite,, it's the top of my dessert island discs list. 5 star

Members Reviews: Do NOT buy this, it is less than 30 seconds long What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you? Ridiculous that this is even on here or that they are charging money for this. It was less than 30 seconds and was just someone reading the statement that is in the description. Complete waste of money. What was most disappointing about Reader's Digest - editors story? It is essentially a sentence, calling this a story is a bit of a stretch. How did the narrator detract from the book? Problem wasn't the narrator, but the content. You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities? Nope Any additional comments? The site should clearly be advertising that this is 27 seconds in length. Had that been listed anywhere I never would have purchased.

What is the correct way to make a grilled cheese sandwich? Is the designated hitter rule the salvation of baseball or its undoing? Is it rational to be an optimist? And - the question that haunts us all - should toilet paper unwind over the top of the roll or from underneath? In his first collection of essays, author Brian Kenneth Swain tackles hundreds of life's questions while exploring a vast array of subjects - from tubas to two-year-olds, from field goals to child labor laws, and from high school shop class to the worst round of golf ever played. With an acerbic wit and an honest approach, Swain shares his perspective on such pivotal matters as how to ski without losing a limb or your self-esteem, how to correctly prepare and consume lobster according to Maine standards, and whether marketing ploys hypnotically convince consumers to replace perfectly functioning items without a second thought. Swain encourages a kind of tongue-in-cheek thinking that prompts us to take a second look at the world around us. The Curious Habits of Man shares an amusing glimpse at life as one man contemplates many of our greatest - and smallest - questions. Members Reviews: Melba Toast and Dry Tea This title befits a review cloaked in metaphor and colloquies...,essentially what this entire collection of essays summarize. To pass off as mediocre and painfully average, may be an overstatement. Great yawn if your NyQuil needs assistance - otherwise, pass. Boring Painfully boring. I honestly have nothing good to say about this audio book. It was a complete waste of time and money.

Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 8 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: "It's my belief that sanity lies in realizing that reality is not exactly what we had in mind," says Roy Blount, Jr. in this witty collection of essays. With humor that's wry, dry, and warm, he delights and provokes us by confronting the reality of American life compared to the way we thought it would be. With his characteristic drawl (or "oral resonance," as he calls it), he reflects on John Wayne, the federal deficit, women's underwear, and more.

True stories about masturbation, hair straightening, sleep, near death experiences, and more from the brilliant comedy minds behind Saturday Night Light, Roseanne, Sex and the City, The Ben Stiller Show, and The Simpsons. These audio selections feature highlights from Un-Cabaret's monthly reading series "Say the Word": Editorial Reviews: At once sophisticated and sidesplitting, this comic anthology from Un-Cabaret unleashes the laughs with its ensemble cast of comedians, their collective body of work spanning SNL, Roseanne, Sex in the CIty, and The Simpsons. Part of Un-Cabaret's monthly reading series, Say the Word adopts a tone more ponderous and poetic than typical stand-up faire. Indeed, with their emphasis on highly literary humor, the proceedings resemble a random and ribald rendition of A Prairie Home Companion. Featuring Un-Cabaret regulars such as Beth Lapides, Rob Cohen, and Alan Zweibel, Say the Word treats listeners to tickling takes on such wide-ranging topics as bad sex, teenaged angst, and brushes with death, among others. Critic Reviews: "Above and beyond!" (The New Yorker) "Original, deep, and very funny!" (The Onion)

They are "dates from hell", those traumatic dates that are too terrible to believe, yet too vivid ever to forget. The only thing better than recounting details of your own hellish date is hearing about other people's disaster dates. Here are true-life accounts of dates gone horribly wrong. ©1992 Katherine Ann Samon; (P)1992 Penguin HighBridge Audio Members Reviews: good for a quick laugh this book has several knee slappers... Especially the first story... it brought back some of my humorous date from Hell experiences... Funny but not hilarious I laughed a few times here and there. Some other stories seemed out there and totally fake. I expected it to be funnier. Overall it was easy to listen too and good for relaxing and releasing stress.

Nice Guy Island Audiobook by Phil Torcivia

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/340/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Nice Guy Island Author: Phil Torcivia Narrator: David A. Nickerson Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 41 mins Language: English Release date: 08-25-17 Publisher: Phil Torcivia Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Tour of Nice Guy Island You single? How's that dating thing working out for you? Getting your recommended nightly allowance of love and affection? Or are you at the point where a bottle of Pinot, a good TV series, and a pet or two are all you need? Thirteen years of being single, after 13 years of marriage, has left me in a peculiar place - on Nice Guy Island. I'm not the aggressive bad boy who hooks women with his mysterious behavior. I'm polite, kind, and considerate, which translates into "f--king boring" for far too many potential mates. Hence, all my paddling away from the island lands me in strong currents, taking me back where I started. If you visit my island, what you'll find is an often-sedated, yet content population of one and two-thirds (male felines, Syd and Symon). The fridge is full of beer, tuna, hot sauce, and prepared meals. The freezer has ice packs for sore, old muscles. Nothing else to see here. Not exactly Barbados. On this island, even masturbation has become tedious, so I venture out nightly in search of stimulation. This is a document of those travels. May you find humor in my message - it keeps me afloat. Yours, stranded, Phil Members Reviews: Fun and enlightening Charming, forthright, and not for any under 21 or maybe a little older. Guys, here's a guy who probably says what you are all thinking. Ladies, if you want to know what a man is thinking, this book if for you. Apparently, men want us to be more forward. Lay out your cards and just tell them what you think--at least this is what will work if you ever run into Phil Torcivia. And because Phil tells us what he's thinking, and when he's thinking it, this book is not for the squeamish. There is not a lot that Phil leaves out in his thinking process--if anything. This book is light, funny, insightful, and a bit scary. It's like listening to a great comedian in your mind. There are laugh-out-loud parts in the book, and parts where you go 'huh'? Guys really think that? Since I'm married to a guy who's not afraid to say what's on his mind, I'd have to say that Phil is not holding back. There were parts even I couldn't handle and skipped by, but that's probably not going to be most people's opinion. So, if you want a light and amazing book that you don't have to commit to(each chapter is something new and you can skip around), just like Phil, this is your book. I wish I were in a book club because I'd recommend this book for the ladies just for fun. Five Stars A fun and thoughtful collection that any guy who knows the trials of being a "nice guy" should enjoy.

We are known for our eccentricity - here's some proof! There is some bizarre stuff in this audiobook. For example, the strange world of weighing the mayor and the spookiness of turning the devil's stone, the crazy bacon-related Dunmow Flitch Trials, and the madness of the Maldon Mud Race. Then some of the barking mad world championships - haggis eating, gravy wrestling, welly wanging, snail racing, and clog cobbing, to name but a few. Curious? Then why not get your copy of the Barking Mad Box Set now to discover more about other crazy customs, such as beating the bounds, bottle kicking, and black pudding throwing? The British are still eccentric and barking mad. We love it. Here is the Barking Mad Box Set to prove it! Here are just some of the 60 barking mad British traditions, customs, and sports you will hear about in this book.... Members Reviews: very disappointed What disappointed you about Barking Mad Box Set? It was very poorly edited, with repeated sections, and basically unlistenable What will your next listen be? Not this! Any additional comments? It was presented as a whimsical look at the eccentric traditions of the UK with some background to them - instead it was a tedious description with no insight or commentary and extremely poorly edited.

The New Rules for Blondes Audiobook by Selena Coppock

Title: The New Rules for Blondes Author: Selena Coppock Narrator: Selena Coppock Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 38 mins Language: English Release date: 04-23-13 Publisher: HarperAudio Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Writer, comedienne, and full-time Blonde Selena Coppock offers up adventures, misadventures, and golden-hued nuggets of wisdom in a laugh-out-loud anthem for those of us who really do have more fun. The modern blonde is savvy, wise, confident, capable, and not afraid to laugh at herself when the occasion calls for it. She knows who she is and is prepared to subvert all stereotypes (although she's not above wielding her golden tresses to her advantage), and knows how to be both classy and a little brassy. In the way only a Boston-bred New Yorker who once won "Best Hair" in her high school graduating class could, Coppock doles out tongue-in-cheek advice about avoiding hair disasters, the consequences of dating a man who cares a little too much about his own hair product, and so much more in an outrageous essay collection that will have even the staunchest of raven-haired beauties considering a trip to the nearest salon. Members Reviews: A Brunette loves this book! From the title, you might think this book is just for blondes, but boy would you be wrong. But you're probably used to that, right? I get the feeling you're wrong a lot. But seriously - this book is for blondes, sure, but it's also for anyone who wants to read something FUNNY. That would be me. I saw Selena Coppock do standup a few years ago, so even though I'm a dark brown haired lady, I was intrigued when I heard about her book. It did not disappoint. The book is every bit as funny as Selena's standup. Her writing style is smart, funny, and dare I say: whimsical? I dare. Enjoy the footnotes. Many of my favorite jokes are embedded in those lil munchkins. If you're looking for a fun, funny read - and I have a feeling you are - New Rules for Blondes is it. The hilarity of living life as a blonde The New Rules for Blondes struck such a chord in me, that I was often snorting with laughter while reading it on a plane. I'm sure my seat mates nearby thought I had some serious disorder. Luckily, this made them avoid like the plaque so that I could continue reading and snorting in peace. Selena picks up on and describes in such perfect detail what it is to live your life as a blonde in this world. The book is hilarious, truthful, and just feels happy. As a half-brassy, half-platinum blonde, I highly recommend this book to all those who used to be blonde, who currently are blondes, and who strive one day to reach that perfect place of blondness. Read it! (Plus, I want to meet Selena and hang out some time so we can discuss Blonde "things.") Great comedic voice! Selena Coppock's "New Rules for Blondes" was written in such a lovable voice that just made you want to be her best friend. Yes, I am a blonde, but I also related to her disdain for technology, love of hair metal, and fighting spirit. Her prose is unique in its approach, making me wonder if Selena may just be the next big thing in the book world. I loved this book! Very funny Selena's Blonde book is a good read. It's for adults, but still a good read. Her real life incidents are put to use and show a lighter side of hair....pun intended. Not Just for Blondes I found this book to be well-written and entertaining. There are some interesting bits of information mixed in with amusing personal stories. This would be a good gift book for some light-hearted reading.

Two control freaks. One steering wheel. What could possibly go wrong? It may be that a marriage ends not with a whimper but with the slam of a car door on a deserted stretch of highway. Most married couples know better than to put themselves in each other's way, but in Ken La Salle's first autobiographical monologue, he tells about how he and his wife of eight years did just that on a road trip that probably should never have happened. As husband and wife drive each other crazy, they must also contend with Ken's schizophrenia, the in-laws, Vicky's homicidal friends, and a cast of characters along the way. Some of this may sound familiar, and the rest will have you thankful you didn't take the trip yourself. All of it culminates in a single moment on a deserted roadside on the Olympic Peninsula, when all the madness of marriage comes down to one question: Is this how a marriage ends?

Wheeler Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: A hilarious short story of a first date gone awry by multiple Lambda Literary Award finalist Jerry Wheeler. Members Reviews: A quick, entertaining and easy read This is a short story about a date. Mike and Jerry have been chatting online and after having a couple of phone conversations they have decided to meet in person. This is the story of their first date. I found this very entertaining and could relate to the hope, fear, disappointment and humor that comes with telling someone about a disastrous date. All seems well at first but things start to get messy quickly. I liked the way it was told without a lot of filler although a bit more detail about the character's would have been nice. Didn't end the way I expected either and I found it refreshing. 6 out of 10 Reviewed by Brienne Dubh @ Escapology Reviews Listen, laugh, enjoy. There's nothing quite like a good first date. Unfortunately, that's exactly what this is: nothing like a good first date. We've all been there. You meet someone for the first time face-to-face, and there's the thrill of potential, a (hopefully) mutual spark, and then the date begins in earnest and you're doing everything you can to make this a good experience. Only sometimes, the other person says or does something that makes you stumble a bit. Will the date recover? Probably not if it's like this one. A story of a dinner date that goes wrong - hilariously, uniquely, laugh-out-loud wrong - told by multiple Lambda Literary Finalist Jerry L. Wheeler, T-Bone, Medium Rare will have you laughing as much as you're cringing. Need a laugh? Need to feel like that date you just went on wasn't actually the strangest date ever? Relax. Wheeler has you covered. Performed by the author to grand effect, this audio is just the short and not-so-sweet pick-me-up you're looking for, and a reminder that the truth is always stranger than fiction.

Title: How To Get a Bad Haircut Without Even Trying Author: Will Bevis Narrator: Gary Roelofs Format: Unabridged Length: 16 mins Language: English Release date: 04-18-14 Publisher: Will Bevis Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Never get a haircut from a woman who Has Just Got a Divorce. It's a real bad idea. I'm living proof. Members Reviews: What happened to you, Will? Will is a laid back kind of guy who doesn't even go to the trouble of getting a haircut more than every five or six months - not until his "thinning gray hair with a bald spot in the back gets so long it even starts to bother (him)". Because he hasn't gone for a haircut in quite a a while, he hasn't heard Jen's news. "You know I got divorced, didn't you?" "220 Volts of electricity ran through the chair. I had been casually laying back but I was immediately was jolted to an upright position. 'What?' I said. 'Are you kidding me?' " Unfortunately, she wasn't. "Electricity was still going through me. I would have been less shocked if Martians had landed on the front yard and were selling space rides, two for a nickel. " 'I can't believe it,' I said. 'I've never seen a couple happier than you two.' 'That's what I thought, too,' she said. " 'When did this happen?' 'Just a few weeks ago.' " 'What happened, Jen?' I asked her, truly dumfounded by it all. 'He came in one day.' she said, 'and just said, 'Well, I'm not going to cheat on you. You told me to tell you if I found someone else. And I have.' " As Jen and Will discussed the divorce, she gave him a haircut. When she had finished, he told her he was late getting back to work. Read the story to see why he was really in such a hurry to get out of the salon. Also read about the other situations that arose as a result of his "cut" on this particular day. Unfortunately, I have been in Will's situation and can totally relate. It took weeks before I could even halfway cover up the damage without using help. It was TERRIBLE! And people really DO ask you what happened! This was a humorous story that was fun to read and did not take a long time to read. Would recommend to anyone with a sense of humor that is looking for something light.

A bit about My Ashes of Dead Lovers Garage Sale from Marilyn... The original column that this book takes its name from has been lost somewhere in the depths of my office. It's probably just as well, but the gist of the column was: My single blonde friend and I combined our households for a garage sale. While sorting through items, she would hold something up and ask something like: Where did you get this? Fortunately, she didn't add the word 'monstrosity'. And my reply was usually something like: 'Oh, you remember old what's his name. He gave it to me when he got a guilty conscience for taking somebody else to ski in Aspen. Let's put a $.25 cent tag on it.' And then, another object, with a similar answer. In sum, I had about six or seven unwanted gifts in the pile, all marked $.25 cents. That's all the memories of these guys are worth, I pronounced over a glass of wine (not for sale, incidentally). Poor guys. If they only knew, their ashes were even now being spread over the garage, albeit in the form of their cheesy gifts to me...And that's where My Ashes of Dead Lovers Garage Sale got its name...

Title: Road to Rouen Author: Ben Hatch Narrator: Andrew Wincott Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 54 mins Language: English Release date: 05-23-13 Publisher: Headline Digital Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: From the best-selling author of Are we Nearly there Yet? (Radio 2 Book of the Year & voted Amazon Customers' Fave Kindle Read 2011) comes a new hilarious and touching story of travel chaos. Ben Hatch is on the road again. Commissioned to write a guidebook about France (despite not speaking any French) he sets off with visions of relaxing chateaux and refined dining. Ten thousand miles later his family's been attacked by a donkey, had a run-in with a death-culti, and, after a near drowning and a calamitous wedding experience involving a British spy, his own marriage is in jeopardy. A combination of obsessions about mosquitoes, French gravel, and vegetable theme parks mean it's a bumpy ride as Ben takes a stand against tyrannical French pool attendants, finds himself running with the bulls in Pamplona and almost starring in a snuff movie after a near-fatal decision to climb into a millionaire's Chevrolet Blazer. Funny and poignant, Road to Rouen asks important questions about life, marriage, and whether it's ever acceptable to tape baguette to your children's legs to smuggle lunch into Disneyland Paris. Members Reviews: Interesting narration, but great book What made the experience of listening to Road to Rouen the most enjoyable? I loved Ben's book, but Andrew Wincotts narration bothered me, especially when doing Dinah or the children's words.... curious Not much information about France! If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more? A psychologist. What was most disappointing about Ben Hatchs story? His relationship with his wife Which scene did you most enjoy? The scenes about French people What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? Disappointment Any additional comments? I expected a book about France but it was mostly about the difficult relationship between Ben Htch and his wife! Can't Believe Author & 'Story' Can be SO Annoying What disappointed you about Road to Rouen? Everything! The characterisation, the dialogue, the story and the narration all combine to produce a whinging, annoying and self centered experience. Would you ever listen to anything by Ben Hatch again? Possibly as I can't believe anything else by him can be so bad. How did the narrator detract from the book? His vocalisation of the wife was demeaning, the constant whinging became grating and the children ... What character would you cut from Road to Rouen? Ben. Any additional comments? Before purchasing this audio book I read the varied reviews including the comments about the constant blaming, whinging and demeaning of Ben's wife and dismissed them as being the style of the humour.

Campbell Narrator: Alan Sain, Duane Allen Format: Abridged Length: 4 hrs and 4 mins Language: English Release date: 02-01-13 Publisher: Open Book Audio Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Close Calls: The True Tales of Cougar Bob is a collection of 26 creative non-fiction short stories about courage, and what it takes to prove it. The Close Calls just bring it out in Cougar Bob. What does it take for North Idaho long distance runner, Robert L. Campbell, to get into the Navy if he is under weight? What does it take for him to walk again, and run, after polio in the Navy? To hunt down and trap a cougar that stalks kids at a school bus stop? To track an escaped killer with his man-trailing bloodhound? To face life-threatening blizzards? To swim rivers at ice flow, or be dropped on a rope across the Moyie Canyon to set a road survey point? Or to volunteer always for the toughest jobs? Newsflashes from "The Cougar Bob Review", a 20-year, mostly humorous, periodic two-page publication about the man, appear between the short stories in this AudioBook. In the "Review", author B. J. Campbell reveals the truth about her fervent, focused, brave husband, Cougar Bob. Members Reviews: Close calls is close to perfection This charming tale is full of the adventures of a true western character. Bob Campbell alias " Cougar Bob" is one of those bigger than life individuals that we seem to grow out here in the mountains of Idaho and Montana the "real west". His numerous experiences and close calls provide the reader with an honest and light hearted view of living in the great northwest. Although some of the exploits may ring a bit exaggerated the essence of the stories are essentially true and full of fun. . Well written and with a tongue in cheek playfulness, this book is a joy to read. Obviously a labor of love, this story is about a unique individual whose life-long challenges and exploits in the wilderness areas of the inland northwest provide the reader a close-up of the strength of character and resourcefulness that living and hunting in the wilds of Idaho and Montana require. You will not be disappointed with this book. Determination A way of life story, lived out by a man of great courage and determination, overcoming all obstacles to excel in his ever adventuresome spirit. Cougar Bob, a "mans man" has lived the life that most men only dream of and lived to tell about it! Five Stars Unbelievably funny true stories. A great read! A perfect read for outdoor and wilderness enthusiasts Robert L. Campbell, aka Cougar Bob comes to vivid life as his wife, B. J. Campbell relates colorful stories beginning from his childhood on through his senior years. Written in first person, the book is chock-full of colorful descriptions of outdoor adventures, hunting, trapping, sometimes for sustenance, sometimes to save farm stock, often for hire when wildlife stalks too close to civilization. As a boy, Bob loved to run-he could run for miles. He ran for the love of running. He ran nine miles to catch the school bus in rural Idaho. He ran for survival. He ran for play. While in the Navy, he contracted polio and, for most people, that would have been the end of running. But not for Bob. As soon as he could he was up and struggling to walk. He graduated to walking with leg braces and eventually managed without the braces.

Title: The Suburban You Subtitle: Reports from the Home Front Author: Mark Falanga Narrator: Mark Falanga Format: Abridged Length: 4 hrs and 32 mins Language: English Release date: 09-17-04 Publisher: Random House Audio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Nothing is the same ever again. With the dry wit of David Sedaris, and Dave Barry's love of the absurd, Falanga details his new, suburban landscape from the point of view of a bewildered but gung-ho everyman. From the complex political pecking order in the neighborhood, with its ultracompetitive block parties and its consuming holiday-card rivalry, to the surprises lurking on every corner, such as the 12-year-old pyromaniac next door and the suspiciously broad-shouldered "lady" on the commuter train, The Suburban You describes in slyly understated prose the vicissitudes of life in the 'burbs. Critic Reviews: "The Suburban You is droll enough to put a smile on the most cynical urban puss. Falanga's voice is winning and companionable and funny and manages to make such chores as painting his children's bathroom ceiling into a prospect more daunting and heroic than painting the Sistine Chapel. It made me very happy to live in a city, but I certainly enjoyed the outing." (Christopher Buckley) Members Reviews: This is the worst book I have ever read! Honestly, this is the first book that was so bad, I couldn't finish it. I thought the concept was clever, but the stories told by the author (using an irritating second person "you" throughout the book)are boring and not funny. The author tells us this book is hilarious, but he is sadly mistaken. The stories are uninteresting, haphazard, and don't really capture the true essence of suburbia. The author brags about all the money he has and lives in a world that is not reflective of the majority of the suburbs. For example, he talks about how Halloween has changed since he was a kid. He says now Halloween parties, catered and served by butlers in tuxes, have replaced kids trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. What? I think in 99% of the suburbs, kids still dress up and trick-or-treat door-to-door. Most of his stories reflect this thinking in his irritating, ego boosting, bragging banter. I never take the time to write reviews, but this book was so bad I felt I needed to warn people. Try buying a book by Dave Barry. He is really a funny author who won't tell you how funny he is! Great anectodes about living in a suburb. Perfect for city transplants. This book is not for anyone who lives in a suburb and takes themselves too seriously. If you are looking for amusing anectodes about moving from a large city to a nearby suburb, then you will find plenty to laugh at. Easy read, great narrative style. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Not like real life in the Chicago suburbs! I usually read, not write, reviews, on amazon.com., but this book was so bad I felt compelled to warn others: don't waste the time, or money on this book! The author comes across as a self-important boor, and his wife as a self-centered shrew. How the author could claim to love his wife, and write about her in a poor light, is beyond me. And I'm embarassed to have people who live elsewhere to get the impression that this is what life is like in the suburbs of Chicago - we're not nearly so shallow. I can only assume that the positive reviewers were friends of the author. Ick! Please do not give Mark Falanga any of your money! Please do not buy this book. The author is a smug, self-important guy who thinks he is funny.

Title: Dom Jolys Big American Vacation Subtitle: An Audible Original Author: Dom Joly Narrator: Dom Joly Format: Original Recording Length: 2 hrs and 57 mins Language: English Release date: 09-05-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Comedy, Memoirs Publisher's Summary: [Contains explicit content] Be warned - this raw, unpolished adventure across the States contains alligator wrestling, leather chaps and Vegas weddings. As a multi-award winning comedian and travel journalist, Dom Joly's take on any destination is always witty, sharp, hilarious and irreverent - even more so when that destination is the backwaters of the USA. Join Dom on a three-week odyssey across the USA as he explores the weird and wonderful oddities of American culture with his trusty sidekick (and complete stranger) Fiona. With the same level of widescreen storytelling you'd expect from a television documentary, Big American Vacation sees Joly rove across the continent in his Chrysler 'Enormoburger', investigating coffin races at the 'Cryonics Mardi Gras', drive-through weddings and late-night emergency Elvises, competitive turkey bowling, marijuana sommeliers and dude ranches. Members Reviews: Fun ! I like listening to Doms voice. He has an interesting story to tell as he goes to several places in the US as a sort of road trip, and gets into a few tight spots along the way. I like travel books mixed with humor, so this fit the ticket. Wish it would have been longer. Maybe he can make a road trip #2 sometime. terrible audio quality - total profiteering, awful I normally enjoy Dom Jolly's travel books, but this is not a book or even a travel journal. Its a very very poorly recorded series of travel 'larks' between Dom and some giggling unfortunate from Amazon that sounds like it's been recorded on a very poor quality mobile phone. If you can imagine a 20 minute out on the road radio show that has not been planned, produced or edited this is what you have. It really is like someone replaying something they recorded themselves, that they find really funny, which you cant really hear or understand. Oh you had to be there - it was so funny. There is a horrendous 'announcer' who keeps interjecting at the start and throughout telling you what hilarious things are coming up. The screeching very annoying American woman's voice is at a volume that will blow your ear drums as you have had to turn the volume up to hear what Dom is mumbling on about. Dom has a side-kick, some girl from Amazon who you can barely hear as she obviously isn't mic'd up, who he tries to engage in conversation which is mostly just childish giggling - she must be in so much awe of him. A truly dreadful listen. Only 3 hours long (thank God), Dom you can do so much better than this and Amazon should be ashamed of the blatant profiteering. Not worth 10p - will be returning for refund. Love Dom but this is dross Is there anything you would change about this book? I would change buying it. I would also give everyone who's speaks in here a microphone Would you be willing to try another book from Dom Joly? Why or why not? Had the other three already love them will get the next. What didnt you like about Dom Jolys performance? Nice voice but he is loud and the only one with a microphone so you can't hear the other people properly. Was Dom Joly's Big American Vacation worth the listening time? No Any additional comments? Dom Jolys other books are brilliant in them he makes no secret that he loves travelling and loves to try to get others to pick up the bill for hi, doing very little work.
