There is much tranquility and wisdom in their words. For this particular project, the traditional background music is a nice touch and I have thoroughly enjoyed repeated listenings. The only consideration I have for not giving five stars is regarding the narration. No disrespect intended to Mr. Holyoak, he does a fine job. It is just that, to my ears, his delivery feels a bit contrived. Chinese petry seen from China This is classic Chinese poetry translated by a Chinese scholar with the rhyme patterns of the orriginal mandarin. The titling and language differ from the translations of American poets like Ezra Pound, but the poems are remain recognizable. A worthwhile read. Five Stars Lovely book of poetry even for those who are not overly into it. Overheard Conversation Between Two Friends My introduction to Li Po (Li Bai) and Tu Fu (Du Fu) came via my high school sophomore World History text. I thought it was strange to see poetry in the side bar then (1967) and I still wonder at its inclusion. But the poems seized my imagination and stayed with me. Later I discovered the translations of Whaley and Rexroth and my life-long love affair with Chinese poetry in translation was secured. So, why would I need yet another English translation? I feel strongly that you always need new translations; English changes, culture changes, scholarship changes, and tastes change. And no one is entitled to the last word, however great. The particularly refreshing aspect of this book is that the translator honors the formal aspects of the originals, giving careful consideration to their formal balance, a fact anyone can appreciate from looking at the originals (provided in facing-page format), even if they don't read Chinese. True, many translations of Chinese and Japanese poetry from the past have taken a more rapturous, whimsical approach. Catching a dreamy culture in dreamy, amorphous layout on the page. They can be effective, but they are a long distance from the "original intent." From there, as with all translations, it's the translator's game. All that moot technical stuff aside, I especially enjoyed reading the book as a sort of on-going conversation between two friends. The greatest poets of their age, and nearly exact contemporaries (Li Bai 701-762; Du Fu 712-770), we can only be certain that they met twice; but they went on to write poems addressed to each other. It is wonderful to have this sort of handbook recounting their similar interests, their observations on similar topics, and their different takes on everything. Considered the Yin and Yang of Tang poetry, there's never a note of contention or jealousy between them. They honored each other as colleagues. None of this is to trivialize Holyoak's work. What he has achieved here is enormous and merits the investment of time in technical study and appreciation. But it should not be overlooked that his achievement starts with "first principals": the translations are immediately attractive.

Daly not only reads the quatrains but also judiciously inserts selected author's note to aid the listener in grasping the nuances of the poem. Well worth the price, and then some.

They surely couldn't understand what it was about and if in doubt, ban it! It must be one of the first examples of magic realism and it mixes daily life and outrageous fantasy in a mesmeric way. My biggest problem is the translation: the English really clunks in places, as though the translator dared not move too far away from a literal translation and insisted on sticking close to the Russian text even when it generated doubtful English. A nice compilation The poems selected for this compilation are very nice. I would recommend it if you want to read poetry every now and then.

Members Reviews: Subtle social commentary, outstanding performances What made the experience of listening to Amy's View (Classic Radio Theatre) the most enjoyable? Judy Dench's performance was magnetic. All the other actors did a wonderful job too and lifted the performance out of the "radio" and onto the stage. It comes to no surprise that these actors were a part of the original live-theater cast. What other book might you compare Amy's View (Classic Radio Theatre) to and why? I have listened to loads of other radio theater and audio drama here on audible, such as the productions of L.A Theater works, BBC plays, as well as others. This is one of the best. As theater goes, maybe Tennessee Williams or Arthur Miller would be be a decent comparison (although they, apart from being American, are also different in many ways), given the social realistic setting. For some reason, Esme made me think of Blanche in "A Streetcar Named Desire". Which scene was your favorite? The whole play was superb and each part brought new things to the story. If I need to pick a scene I suppose it might be when Amy comes back to see Esme in the early nineties. I don't want to give away too much of the story, but the way the scene questions individual responsibility in volatile economic times, or just in life in general, is just brilliant, and Dench is at the top her game here. Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry? Yes it made me cry and it does not happen often. Any additional comments? I was positively surprised of Peter Hare's writing. Since I knew he was a political dramatist I would have expected not to like him too much, since I was never a big fan of political drama or fiction. Political commentary in fiction often comes at the expense of complexity and nuance, and becomes a bit too simplistic in my view. In short overtly political stuff is just boring. This is a great exception. As a matter of fact, the social background and setting gives the play even more pathos here, and even makes it seem more real and authentic than the plays of someone like Tom Stoppard, for instance.

This audiobook includes only early poems published up to 1914. It leaves out the last 25 years of Yeats career and most of his greatest works. If you are looking for an audio of representative works by Yeats, I would recommend that you choose one of the other options.

Buy any poetry book before you buy this one. As is fairly typical, I received this book free in exchange for a review. The author also informed me that her book had been chosen for "Hot New Releases". After reading her book, I'll not be buying anything that's considered "hot" by Amazon. This book is a collection of exceptionally random poetry covering all manner of topics from Scotch and Cigars to Patriotism. On the bright side, I will note that the author's poetry was exceptionally free. It came to be at no cost except that associated with the internet connection I used to receive and open her PDF. And since I used my fiancee's internet connection at least a couple of those times it was really very, VERY free. To the negative side, this poetry has absolutely nothing to offer the reader. I read several of the poems aloud to my fiancee and her son and we all just looked at each other in shock. At several points we laughed out loud at just how poor the entire concept of many of these poems are and how profoundly inane was both the metre and rhyme scheme. This isn't the worst poetry I've ever ready but it is certainly among the worst and that sense is compounded by all the positive comments in the front of the book that the author quotes. In summary, do not, under any circumstances buy this book. It is vapid in content and poor in execution. I would recommend almost any poetry before this poetry. This book is an example of just how careful you have to be of what you buy on Amazon. (Grade:B) A Remarkable Beginning. FROM THE HEART: A Journey Of Love. A Critical Review. It takes me temporarily out of the busy current world into memories that are at the same time both sad and pleasant. Beautiful and Thought-Provoking Sara Teasdale's poetry is thought-provoking and beautiful. I would highly recommend this book of poetry for the new poet, all the way to the experienced writer.

In high school, I read "Spring and Fall: to a young child" and loved it, though I did not realize it was by the same author. It was only college that I connected the two, and discovered a wonderful poet, who has become one of my favorites. For a fan of Hopkins looking for an authoritative volume, this edition is a treasure. In addition to his better known works, it contains early poems, numerous fragments, and unfinished works, in fact "every scrap of English verse which can be ascribed... to Hopkins" (from the Introduction xvii). In addition, it contains a good essay on Hopkins and his work, and extensive textual notes. Hopkins poetry may appear obscure and difficult at first, and in fact it is, at times, wildly original. Hopkins' language is deliberately archaic and inventive, and he both revives wonderful words not used since Shakespeare, and makes up his own. Hopkins also writes in "sprung rhythm," a metrical style that is almost syncopated, and juxtaposes stressed syllables. I recommend reading his poems out loud. The sheer beauty of his language will inspire you to recite the words over and over again, until you understand his meaning: the essence which he is trying to distill. New readers may be daunted by this volume at first, and find that Hopkins' great poems are "submerged in a mass of less significant fragments" (Intro xiv). I would suggest his sequence of ten sonnets (#31-40) as an ideal place to start reading. Hopkin's friend and fellow poet Robert Bridges wrote that Hopkins strove "for the unattainable perfection of language," and at times he seems to have actually obtained it: "Men go by me whom either beauty bright / In mould or mind or what not else make rare: / They rain against our much-thick and marsh air / Rich beams, till death or distance buys them quite." (The Lantern out of Doors, #40). END Great gift for Hopkins fans I purchased this as a gift for my dad, after finding out Hopkins is his favorite poet, and he absolutely loves this book. Five Stars The best of the best in modern English poetry. Terrible This is one of the ugliest editions of any book I could imagine. It's laid out in bland, boring type. The paper and cover seem cheap, like it was made by the local print shop. Worst of all, the lay out of te poems is a disaster. Titles appear at the bottom of one page with the actual poem on the next. The last couple lines of a poem often dangle at the top of the next page - sometimes even requiring a turn of the page! - when there is plenty of open space all around, enough for the whole poem to sit in one place. It looks simple amateur.

This Kindle edition not only contains the poem of Francis Thompson, but also informative and illuminating commentary by James J. Daily, S.J., on select verses of the poem as they relate to the life of Francis Thompson. Although the poem is not an easy read, I found the commentaries very helpful in understanding the meaning of the "Hound of Heaven" and relating it to the life of Francis Thompson. Francis was born in a devout Roman Catholic family. He was sent to a boarding school to study for the priesthood, but soon it became clear to him that he had no interest in becoming a priest. His father, a medical doctor, wanted him to study medicine, but Francis had no aptitude for science. He wanted to be a poet, so he left home at the age of twenty-six and made his way to London. Living on the streets of that city, he soon became destitute and an addict to opium. He eventually died of tuberculosis, but shortly before his death, he wrote this poem in which he confessed that he was not running away from his home or himself, but he was actually running away from God. Yet God, said Francis, graciously pursued him, as it were, as the Hound of Heaven. I highly recommend this Kindle edition to anyone who seeks to be enriched by Francis Thompson's portrayal of a loving, omnipotent, and omniscient God who seeks after us as the Hound of Heaven. This poem has become a personal favorite of mine. I have to say the narrator that truly captured me to this lovely verse was Richard Armitage. It was first introduced in narration style to me by Audible through his reading of Classic Love Poems and this one in particular captures my imagination. I love it. How did the narrator detract from the book? I think Bill Wallis did an okay job and I just love the work by Marlowe, but his pauses and inflections felt choppy and did not feel like he felt the passion of the piece. Mr. Wallis read it softly but without the passion and the breathless hope and anticipation of loves acceptance that Mr. Armitage had relayed. One would think by the words, the ache of whether or not the shepherd heard, "Yes, I will be your love..." would be an airy desperation and Mr. Armitage totally knew and relayed that feeling in his rendition. Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry? This work makes me smile wistfully, sigh in knowing acceptance that there just might be a passionate fool out there for this fool. I catch my breath every time and bite my lip thinking of the scene.

Which is why, hesitantly, rated this amazing collection 4 stars instead of 5. Minimal is a Good Thing Those who have stated that Carver was a minimalist seem to feel minimalism is a negative. Minimalism is a form of expression, but it reflects merely the form, not the content. These are not minimal poems. The impact comes from straight language in simple grammatical structure. It is amazing how Carver is able to convey intense emotions with such a few number of words. He is a master. After I read FEAR, I was astounded (and somewhat disturbed) at how accurately he tells the depth of fear in such mundane events and short descriptions. I am one of those who likes Carver's short stories as well as his poetry.

Many of the poems in Floating, Brilliant, Gone reflect Choi's experience in the U.S. as a woman, Asian-American, or both. The book's personal feel made me feel like I was taking a peek into Franny's diary entries (exceedingly well-written diary entries, mind you). I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a bit of poetry, and her live performances are even better! If none of this convinces you though, you should buy this book for Franny Choi's re-imagining of Lil Wayne's Pussy Monster which is equal parts of comedic genius and feminist critique. Amazing. I bought this book of poetry for myself as one of two 21st birthday gifts to myself (the other was lingerie). I'm honestly having a hard time deciding which I'm more in love with, which is saying something. This book debut by Choi is gorgeous, inspiring, intimate. She packs such a punch in so few words: "The work of love / becomes its own reason." I've been having a bit of writer's block with my own poetry but this book makes me want to write. I'm a huge fan of Choi's work and this is no exception. Brilliant! A fantastic poetry collection-- I found it fresh, relevant, poignant, truly moving. Very few young poets can capture the timeless themes that Franny successfully does in "Floating, Brilliant, Gone."

I used a variety of sonnets at my high school speech contest for my poetry contest. As hard as shakespeare is to understand, and interpret, i needed some help. I bought the cliffs notes to help me. They helped me understand so much. I would have been lost without them. Besides summarizing the sonnet, the Cliffsnotes provided real insight to the interpretation and meaning of Good ol' Willy. When we had discussions in english class, i already knew everything. But they were the most help to me when i competed with them. Without them, i could not have been state champion in Poetry last year...the four dollars you pay is so worth it. I would have payed forty. If you need any help at all to understanding the beautiful language of the Shakespeare, these Cliffsnotes will do that for you.

The foreword by Andrew Motion is really insightful and puts an academic cast of Betjeman which is really a long way from the Radio 2 world he inhabited and inhabits - a lovely set of poems which brought me warm memories and warmth thoughts in the early Spring days of 2011 against a backdrop of troubles in the Middle East and disaster in Japan. What a world, what a world.

A great gift for anyone who cares about poetry I had no idea who Jay Parini was when I requested a review copy of this book through Library Thing. I haven't had a lot of luck with contemporary poetry, but this goes back forty years so I gave it a try. I was encouraged that the dust jacket features a positive review from Richard Wilbur, a favorite of mine.

Members Reviews: See ya, Dutchy Once I heard a neighbor refer to our author as "little Johnny Updike" and when Rabbit ran, he drove down Rt 222S not too far from my door. To me and a friend or two it trumped Kerouac. A little more subtle, you might say. One book a year followed, just about, mainly the novels, where the protagonist never failed to tell me exactly how the world was going to feel in ten years when I reached the author's age. I am really, really going to miss that. Several writers have commented on the greatness of these poems. That does them a disservice, I think. Updike doesn't show in the major anthologies and there's reason for that. These poems show a cannily perceptive person facing his old age and then, suddenly, his impending death. The first half dozen are recent occasional pieces on his last birthdays "the snowdrops lie/in drenched, bedraggled clumps/their tired news becoming weeds..." Then a half dozen or so on the final illness "My wife of thirty years is on the phone./I get a busy signal, and I know/she's in her grief and needs to organize/consulting friends. But me, I need her voice..." There follow twenty or so assembled to fill out this book on varied subjects and occasions. They're marvelous Updike. Updike on TV, Updike on Helen of Troy, Updike on Monica Lewinski, Updike on Updike's career. How can there be no more Updike? I searched out his Shillington home long ago. Only a few years ago I found the hardscrabble, woodsy farm in which he and the Mother lived. Tiny little farmhouse defaced with prefabs sprinkled about. Up the hill is the Lutheran church where the pastor shared his shocking thought that little Johnny would only be seeing Granny in heaven again in some very abstract and meaningless way. Updike said he felt like reporting this heresy to every adult he knew. The poems in every section feature Reading and environs, his family, his schoolmates, the Sweet Shop... small city life in Pennsylvania Dutch country. "...I had to move/ to beautiful New England - its triple deckers, whited chuches, unplowed streets-/to learn how drear and deadly life can be." Did I say I'm going to miss this guy? An Endpoint of a Writer's Life John Updike's "Endpoint and Other Poems" was published posthumously last year, after a long and stellar writing career.

Almost everyone knows the story of William Tell, but this is the first time I've read Schiller's original. I found it inspirational. In a relativistic age, it is good to be reminded of the virtues and moral standards that have been a foundation for whatever is good in Western culture. Yes, one could object that the good characters are idealised and one-dimensional compared to the flawed, imperfect individuals of the real world, but at least we could aspire to be like the ideals. At another level, Wilhelm Tell gives food for thought about political structure, freedom and self-government. Recommended! A classic read in German Language may be 'veraltet' but it is a good reading exercise for a non native German speaker.

I really enjoy Michael browns work This is an unbiased review through audiobookboom Poetry That Speaks Universal Truths Michael Brown speaks universal truths in this thought-provoking collection of poetry, The Exhibit. The poems come at a fast clip, and the author narrates each one with just the right amount of emotion and exquisite inflection. Some of the poems that stood out to me are Beneath Gray Skies, Lost Boy and A Crisis of Masculinity. With emotions ranging from heartbreak to anger, and themes that deal with life, death, love, nature, classism, commercialization of society and drug use, to name a few, this poet once again proves he is a talent to be reckoned with. Another good poetry collection by Michael Brown I requested this book because I'd heard another book of poems (Mercurial) by this author and I wanted to see how they'd compare. While I think the writing in Mercurial is slightly better, the author/narrator's slow contemplative style seems more suited to this collection which made for a better listening experience. I enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing what else he has in store for us in the future. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Didn't need stitches, Tried my hand at cutting open a coconut like the natives. Well, in fact, while touring a plantation I helped a local woman give birth. Didn't want to make myself out to be a hero. I have to confess. I lot involved with the menses of a woman I met at this great locals' bar. Don't know why I said that. Was something mundane, a razor nick. Well. actually, in a flare-up of civil unrest a stray bullet winged me. I'm okay; didn't want you to worry. Take this postcard and add it to your papier-mache'.

Obviously, the audio version isn't illustrated by anyone, but I own the version referred to in the summary, and I bought the audiobook to go along with it. Unfortunately, the poems are not in the same order in this version as they are in my print version. The reader does not read the title of each verse, making it difficult to figure out where she is. These poems are known for being particularly "child friendly". They were inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's own childhood. They create vivid pictures of fairy worlds and imaginary ships and pleasant villages. The narrator sounds as if she's standing alone in the middle of a cold, empty room, and her dreary recitations would be better suited to Poe's macabre The Raven than to Stevenson's whimsical The Land of Nod or My Bed Is a Boat. I don't know if there are better versions of A Child's Garden of Verses out there, but this one is decidedly disappointing. So Disappointing The poems are beautiful but you would never know it from this version. They are badly read with little expression and the titles are omitted so it is impossible to know when one ends and the next begins. The pace is too fact and the reader has made beautiful poetry sound no more interesting than reciting a page from the phone book. If I could rate this with less than one star I would, I'm so disappointed with this purchase. Uplifting I had this book as a child and even now I find that those familiar lines and comforting rhythms soothing and uplifting. Judith Anderson has the perfect voice (in my opinion) for these poems, reading with enthusiasm and warmth, it is almost impossible to remain miserable after listening to this lovely audiobook.

I thought it was a beautiful compilation myself. Just an FYI to readers though -- some of the poems are about sex, drinking or Craw's appreciation for healthy bowels (to put it gently) -- this fits in with how the character of Craw was written and isn't presented in a crude way, but I figured I would mention it for any readers that prefer to avoid such topics in their reading. A couple other things that caught my attention: 1) some of the artwork / graphics shows up a little grainy on the Kindle Fire HD and 2)the "both read the Bible day and night" bit in the poem Sects is from a William Blake quote but is uncredited in Book of Craw. I wanted more The book of Craw is a fine collection of colloquiolisms, but I really wanted more from this story..To Sam Torode .. if you read this, there are more "hobo Tales" waiting to be told by Craw.. He is a wise man who deserves a voice.. how about his relationship with Red (Skelton) and the multitude of other characters he met on the road? Craw's view of Tobias and Sarah.. did he keep track of them without them knowing ?? I would love to know more about him and what came before Tobias received this testament.. There is always another story.. just around the bend.... Preach on ,Craw I finished the dirty parts of the Bible and caught this suggestion. Written in the voice of Craw , it is joyful ! If you liked Dirty Parts ,you owe it to yourself to follow up with this short collection. Well written. It was something I wouldn't normally read but once started they had me. I had to read another in the series. Good book and an essential addition if you've ever read ... Good book and an essential addition if you've ever read The Dirty Parts of the Bible. My single complaint was it did not include the spectral army investing Prague, or any similar works.

Very Touching The very first poem in the book "My Summer Place of Dreams", touched a special place in my heart. What more can be said of this weeping ... Sylvia. What more can be said of this weeping soul. So fragile, yet strong. Loving so deeply is cost her to not want life any longer. I have always had a soft spot for the deep passion she felt as a young lady. In her verse , she expresses the world through her eyes. Don't we see? Can we not feel? As if her heartache is all there is to be felt in this huge world. I give this book four stars. I only wish she had been here long enough to continue writing more. Astonishing! First of all, there 200+ poems in this book, so it is an amazing volume. Then there is the fact that each poem is about Sylvia Plath. Even more amazing still is the fact that most of the poems are written from the point of view of someone who knew her, someone almost completely unknown to the poet whose work this is! Stephanie Hemphill is a masterful poet, and this was a labor of love that is also a stroke of genius. I love this book I love this book! Such an interesting perspective. As a teacher, I definitely found this text useful when teaching The Bell Jar. It was a great book to read but I don't think I'm at ... It was a great book to read but I don't think I'm at the level to completely understand what the authors message is. More Plath/Hughes exploitation "Your Own, Sylvia: A Verse Portrait of Sylvia Plath", is a book that should not have been written or published. The poetry itself is lame and lackluster, and doesn't do the subject any credit at all. Also, as a fan of Plath myself, I feel Plath, as well as her late husband, have been exploited in the literary far too much. How do you look into someone's marriage and make a verse story out of it? As the author of this waste of time must be an andmirer of Plath, so am I, and I think enough is enough of the Plath/Hughes melodrama. Let's just respect both poets great works.
