In the fourteen year correspondence of Adams and Jefferson, Washington is mentioned three times and Priestly fifty-two times. Why? This book explains. Covers Priestly's connection to Benjamin Franklin and the 'Honest Whigs' in London. In his twenties, Priestly came to these scientists to ask permission to write a book on the history of electricity. He did. It became a book of seven hundred pages used as the basic text for a hundred years. Developed close friendship with Franklin, Erasmus Darwin, etc. Became a leading scientist in Europe. Royal Society, French Royal Society, American Philosophical Society, etc. Nevertheless, his primary work was as a clergyman. Eventually his penchant for analysis impelled him the write a detailed history of Christianity. Priestly wrote on 1774, "this rapid process of knowledge will, I doubt not, being the means, under God, of extirpating error and prejudice, and a putting an end to all undue and usurped Authority in the business of religion, as well as of science." In 1782 he published "A History of the Corruptions of Christianity": "The Corruptions was a kind of historical deconstruction of the modern church. Starting, of coarse, with divinity of Jesus Christ. . . and tracing each back to the distortions of Greek and Latin theologians starting the fourth and fifth century A.D. about the time of the Council of Nicaea. The corruptions opens with a meticulous assault on the Trinity, which takes up the first quarter of the book, and then widens into a long litany of smaller abuses, the false mysticism of the Eucharist, predestination, the immateriality of the soul, the last supper." Priestly explained his method in the preface, "this historical method will be found to be one of the most satisfactory modes of argumentation, in order to prove that what I object to is really of the corruption of genuine Christianity and no part of the original scheme." Servetus, Newton and Whiston used the same method and reached the same conclusions. (Page 172) "A religious man forced to alter and reinvent his beliefs - and challenge the orthodoxies of the day - in the light of science and history, who was nevertheless determined to keep the core alive. Priestly was a heretic the first order who nonetheless possessed an unshakable faith. . . Ironically, it was "The Corruptions" itself - a work devoted to dismantling so many central values of modern Christianity - that finally gave Jefferson enough philosophical support to call himself a Christian again." (Page 174) Jefferson wrote to Adams, "I have read Priestley's corruptions of Christianity, and early opinions of Jesus, over and over again; and I rest on them as the basis of my own faith. These writings have never been answered." Most today have never considered Preistly's conclusions. I really wanted to understand the mindset of an African American 'Ultraconservative' being African American myself and somewhat successful. Well, I have come to the conclusion that the end result is determined by the journey - and what a journey it was for Justice Thomas. He has a place reserved on my study wall right next to Truman, Obama, Einstein and yes Malcolm x. Audio Quality Distracting - Content Exceptional Clarence Thomas: A Conversation At the 92nd Street At Less Than $1 Learn About Justice Thomas - His Own Words I have always had the utmost respect for Justice Thomas. His was the first Justice whose Senate confirmation I paid attention to. Democrats focused on blocking the conservative justice for the court, in my opinion. I was amazed at the tactics they tried to use instead of debating the merits of this man. Clarence Thomas grew up in the segregated South. His family had nothing of monetary value but he chose not to use that as an excuse to fail. This inexpensive and short listen will focus on the highs and lows of this man who came from humble roots, phases through anger, radicalism, advanced education, many paths that took him to become a justice of the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, Audible.com or iTunes does not have Clarence Thomas autobiography available. It is called 'My Grandfather's Son.' I urge anyone to find it in CD audio, print or digital to read the story of his life. The audio quality was not great, it wasn't bad either. It was subpar due to the fact that it sounded like it was recorded in an auditorium during the Q&A. My advice: Find "My Grandfather's Son" immediately before or immediately after listening to Clarence Thomas: A Conversation At The 92nd Street Y,' you will not regret it. I find that reviews help me, especially when authors or performers are new to me.

Members Reviews: It's beautifully and simply written This was one of those rare novels. It's beautifully and simply written. The story is gripping. The characters are heart wrenching. The author turns each encounter almost into it's own short story. The emotions are so raw and real they stay with you for days. I can't really say enough good things about this story except that if you have Eastern European Jewish heritage it is even more real and more poignant but that is definitely not a must. adventure The main character,Lillian, suffers continuously as she travels from her pogrom wracked village in Balarus. She lost her entire family and way of life in that village and seeks a new life in the US. The story follows her struggles to recover her 4 year old daughter, Sophie, based on a rumor that Sophie may have survived the pogrom. Lillian's determination, courage and willingness to suffer in order to recover her missing child lead the reader through a jungle of adventures, near death experiences, and heartwarming relationships along her quest for Sophie. The story is peppered with humor and yiddishisms. The author provides a degree of closure for each chapter by spelling out the futures of those Lillian leaves behind on her journey to recover Sophie. In this respect, the novel is structured like a series of short stories with a common central character, Lillian. A Better Movie Than a Book This tale about a 22 year old jewish emigre fleeing from the death & destruction of the Russian pogroms to the lower east side of NYC would make a good adventure movie. I prefer seeing action, sex & adventure on the screen. This is not a character driven novel. I loved the Jewish flavor, the Yiddish inflections, and the background of the once thriving Yiddish theatre culture. However, when Lillian leaves to trek through the Yukon and Alaska, the author lost me. I finished the book, but believed my time would have been better spent elsewhere. The author uses the historical information available to her about a woman who walks the telegraph trail alone. There is little data and this book is a work of fiction. I thought the structure of the story was unrealistic. One reviewer wrote that Amy Bloom is really a short story writer. That makes perfect sense. Actually, this book may have been divided into two completely different tales each with a different heroine.

Well as a near life long Michael fan it is hard to pick just one moment, if anything it would be harder to pick one that did not to be honest. Hearing Man In The Mirror at the end knowing he would usually end his shows with that song was heartbreaking I know that. With the 5th anniversary coming up it is hard not to think about how sudden the whole thing was.

In Martin's discussion about his early career, his lifetime in comedy, and Born Standing Up, his memoir that says it all, the comedian delivers the laughs. His stories are hilarious and heartfelt, and he has a fraternal rapport with Rose, the great public television personality who considers Martin a friend. The world of fine art might not be brought up once in this discussion, but the high comedic arts are on abundant display. But apparently the brilliance and flawless eloquence of his guest is more than a match for Rose's missteps in this interview, which I consider easily worth the cost on Audible, even at twice or three times the listed price. Rose's glaringly obvious gaffes here include: Asking a question and not waiting for an answer before asking another question; asking a question and then interrupting his guest as Martin attempts to give an answer; laughing inappropriately during a heartfelt confession of real (and not joyful) emotion; providing false information in his question, forcing his guest to contradict him in his answer; and at one point, unbelievably, actually fumbling condolences when Martin begins to cry during retelling of a particularly painful anecdote related to his difficult relationship with his father. Humble, gracious Steve Martin easily and seemingly effortlessly sidesteps ALL of the mines in this minefield of an interview, though, and you'll come away with a new respect for Steve Martin, a newfound interest in discovering and reading everything Steve Martin has ever written, and a newfound wonder at how inept interviewers ever manage to rise to celebrity status in the entertainment industry. This is a solid listen, I'm glad I bought it, and I will doubtless listen again several more times. Although I was unable to locate Audible recordings of either Martin's exquisite novella Shopgirl or his play Picasso at the Lapin Agile, this interview did inspire me to use a credit immediately on Martin's novel An Object of Beauty, which apparently was inspired by his own experience as an art collector. I have never read the print version so I cannot compare. What did you like best about this story? The way the narrators brought this poetry to life! What about full casts performance did you like? I particularly enjoyed the delivery of the Lorna Goodison poem "By Love Possessed". Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry? Yes, a lot of laughing. Very revealing I learned a ton about how Facebook works and thinks and why it's gotten so big. It was extremely well-written, the best business book I ever read. Kirkpatrick's level of reporting and detail made this such a page-turner that I couldn't put it down. In fact, my husband picked it up while I was reading it and I couldn't get it back until he was done. The book made me realze the The Social Network did Mark Zuckerberg a huge disservice, especially the way the movie made it seem as though the Winklevoss brothers were wronged. My husband says they ought to have a bronze status in their yards to commemorate the huge amount of money Zuckerberg had to give them. The book also made me appreciate Zuckerberg's passion and deliberativeness. The success of Facebook was clearly not a mistake. I am not much for reading for fun but this one was easy I had originally purchased this book in order to have more insight for a paper that I was writing for my MBA program. I began just reading certain parts and excerpts but then I became enthralled and read the entire thing. I am not much for reading for fun but this one was easy, great and entertaining. It was very interesting to read the whole story. The good, the bad, the challenges, and the successes/celebrations. Good Read if You are a Facebook Fan This book is a good read for Facebook Fans or just plain tech fans. The story of how Facebook started at Harvard is fascinating. The only problem with this book is when it was written. I'll bet there is one that was written later out there. This turned out to be an excellent time to read this book because during the time I was reading it Facebook bought WhatsAp and therefore there was a lot about Facebook in the news. Reading this book gave me a better understanding of the news articles. If you are at all interested and use Facebook yourself I highly recommend reading this. If I have a mentor in Programming I choose this guy I admire him a lot on his talent and knowledge and leadership and his rich and through Programming he made it. I watch Facebook movie called Social Network a lot more than 50 times and read that book but the book is not good right now. I am not good at handling anything it will ruin.

Heritage Media acquired exclusive distribution rights to the series from Towers in 1994; the series was licensed for several years with great success to Hodder Headline and reverted to Heritage at the end of 2009. The scripts were written by John Keir Cross, closely following the original stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but renaming some of them. The music for the productions was composed by Sydney Torch, with the famous violin cadenzas played by Alfredo Campoli. Other actors appearing included Robert Rietti, and John Gielguds brother Val (later Director of Drama at the BBC), who played Mycroft Holmes. Orson Welles took the part of Professor Moriarty. Quite possibly other 'big names' on the BBC roster appeared in the series anonymously too. The recordings were carefully remastered so as not to detract from the ambience of the original performances. Members Reviews: Fair A simple mystery which I figured out early on. The story is about a young woman who comes to Sherlock Holmes asking for him to find her fiancée. Sherlock Doesn't Even Break A Sweat I listened to the audiobook version via Librivox The entire situation of a missing suitor was solved without Sherlock ever having to leave his sitting room. Just by listening to testimony, reading a few letters, and summoning the culprit to his residence, he was able to reach his conclusions, which was somewhat anticlimactic, though resourceful on his part. I enjoyed the narrator David Clarke. He had a great British accent and his use of different voices for the various characters was charming without being corny. Elementar... This is not among my favorites in the short stories from Sherlock Holmes series, but it is not completely bad. The story revolves around the case of Miss Mary Sutherland, a woman with a substantial income from the interest on a fund set up for her, which she will get full control upon her marriage. She is engaged to a quiet Londoner who has recently disappeared. Sherlock Holmes's detective powers are barely challenged as this turns out to be quite an elementary case for him, much as it puzzles Watson. The fiancé, Mr. Hosmer Angel, is a curious character, rather quiet, and rather secretive about his life. Miss Sutherland only knows that he works in an office in Leadenhall Street, but nothing more specific than that. All his letters to her are typewritten, even the signature, and he insists that she write back to him through the local Post Office. The climax of the sad liaison comes when Mr. Angel abandons Miss Sutherland at the altar on their wedding day. Holmes, noting all these things, Hosmer Angel's description, and the fact that he only seems to meet with Miss Sutherland while her disapproving youngish stepfather, James Windibank, is out of the country on business, reaches a conclusion quite quickly. A typewritten letter confirms his belief beyond doubt. Only one person could have gained by this: Mr. James Windibank.

Members Reviews: Continuation of Tommy and Tuppence What made the experience of listening to N or M? the most enjoyable? Love Hugh Fraser's narration of all the Agatha Christie novels. He reads and does the different voices well. What about Hugh Frasers performance did you like? His performance is magnificent. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Yes. Any additional comments? If you are new to Tommy and Tuppence series, read the first two Secret Adversary, and Partners in Crime. This third book, takes place about twenty years later when the main characters are in their 40s. Loved it! I loved it! It is another great novel by one of the best mystery authors! Fun Spy Mystery! My first Agatha Christie book, and it was a good one! Tommy and Tuppens are very well-developed and interesting characters, and the subterfuge intrigue of this book is brilliantly written. It even served to be thought-provoking on the subjects of patriotism and power and morality. Very ingenious... excellent narration What a great story with historical facts presented in an interesting way. Tuppence character outside herself. i <3 TnT! i love all of the Tommy and Tuppence stories. i am always sad when they're over. imho, tho, this is not the best of them. maybe it's just me, but i find this one hard to follow. it's a little like mousetrap where everybody is a suspect all the time, and there's no evidence ever. i think it would have been a little easier if Hugh Fraser had varied the voices a little more; a book with 10 main characters was a bit of a stretch for him! despite all of that, im still sad when it's over, and probably going to start it over right now and see if it makes more sense the second time around!

(AudioFile) Members Reviews: Great story and performance Rex Stout surely stuck his neck out when he wrote this book at that time. Even in today's time (or should I say "again in this time") it"s not popular to support groups which are not in the mainstream. Being in an interracial marriage myself I thoroughly enjoyed the story and of course Michael Prichard is a great performer. I probably would enjoy listen to him while he's reading the New York phone book if they still have it. Juergen Amling Nero Wolfe meets the Cival Rights Activists. As always Rex Stout does a great job with his storytelling but this one was unique as it dealt with racism in the early 60's and a group of activists. Wolfe deals with everyone equally and sometimes that's harshly but never based on race. It was unsettling to hear racists using the "N" word so often though. 1964 Caucasian View of Race It is almost impossible to enjoy this book because of the persistent racism that forms a significant part of the plot. The views are so antiquated and painful to listen to that I cannot recommend this book. I am sure the views expressed by the characters were accurate in 1964, but they do not stand the test of time. Vintage...of course! Rex Stout was well ahead of his time in many areas...and his voice was Nero Wolfe (and sometimes even Archie Goodwin). He didn't shy away from tough issues like Civil Rights...he faced them head-on. We get a taste of this in "A Right to Die". And we also get a particularly good mystery story to boot! Good but not stellar An engaging mystery skilfully narrated, but it's not the brightest of Rex Stout's efforts to portray his genius detective Nero Wolfe.

What really sells this is the dramatic narration by David Suchet and Hugh Fraser. Members Reviews: Very enjoyable This is excellent entertainment. If you fancy something short that will keep you guessing and engage - these two episodes will be perfect for you. They invite to sitting at the fire with some knitting with their old English charm. The mysteries are not overly complex, but very pleasant listening. FANTASTIC DR GIDEON DOES IT AGAIN Good plain old fashioned English sleuthing at its best. Thoroughly enjoyed these two plays which had you guessing keeping you on your toes as each of the characters are put through their paces. I got both plots right in the end which is not a discredit to the writer nor the plot. I think Dickson Carr intentionally gives away certain little details as it his way of drawing in the listener and keeping the mind focused, involving the listener all the way through, which is fantastic little trick. Good old (Sir) Donald Sinden superb as always with his upper crust deep vocals and cheeky wit steels the whole show playing the part of the sleuth to aplomb. This is a splendid full cast production. Let us hope more will be found as these are how great sleuthing should be. Entertaining I found these to be very enjoyable indeed. Clever stories that were well performed by the actors.

Each book can be read as a standalone but I believe for most enjoyment they are best read in order, or at least begun earlier in the series. A vast history of the Peculiar Crimes Unit and the various relationships of its' members and associates has built up over many years and adds immeasurably to the overall pleasure. Some particular comments or unexpected characters in a book as far along as number fourteen may seem strange to a new reader. A long and complex investigation here, involving several murders, but that is what we have come to expect and it didn't disappoint. I am delighted that Arthur Bryant has survived his treatment and enjoyed the way that he uses his 'hallucinations' for some apt references from the past to help his thinking fall into place. This time we also learned about the many London Parks and green spaces to add to the wealth of London lore we gain from every single book. It was also a warning to keep our attention drawn on the threat that real life developers are posing to these precious green spaces and our need to protect them. Tim Goodman as always the perfect narrator, he has portrayed every single one of the many characters become old familiar friends . Thank you, Mr Fowler,sir, you are a master craftsman and I suspect there are echoes of yourself in Arthur, although hopefully not the hoarding of food in your pockets. Long may it continue. Love it I love the whole Bryant and May series. I learn some good London history while enjoying a mystery that I can't figure out until the end. I like this series I like British. I like police procedurals. Combining these in the Peculiar Crimes Unit gives me the best of both. This book focuses, more than some in the series, on solving murders. The fascinating histories color the police work leading the reader to surprises. Then. quietly, the ending spells out. Great Series - fun characters, interesting plots I stumbled on the Bryant and May series in the library (public) and had to read them all. This is the latest and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The reader does a super good job - which isn't easy as there are so many voices and they are all British. I like wry British humor, and there is plenty in this book, as well as the others. I've read all the rest, and think this may be the best of them all. Also, the fun way the administrator is portrayed warms the heart of anyone who has worked for a clueless, bumbling boss. Most of us have had that experience, and the memo at the beginning warms my heart. They just keep getting better. This is my favorite detective series ever.
