Title: Studio 360: Culture Shock 1913
Author: Kurt Andersen
Narrator: Kurt Andersen
Format: Original Recording
Length: 53 mins
Language: English
Release date: 12-29-12
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews

Publisher's Summary:
What a year was 1913! In an exhibition in a New York Armory, American viewers confronted Cubism and abstraction for the first time. In Vienna, the audience at a concert of atonal music by Schoenberg and others broke out into a near-riot. And in Paris, Stravinsky and Nijinskys new ballet The Rite of Spring burst on stage with inflammatory results.
Culture Shock 1913 tells the stories behind these and other groundbreaking events that year, and goes back to consider what led to this mad, Modernist moment. "I think in a lot of ways it was just the beginning of a century just of absolute chaos and nightmare, and as so often, the artists heard it and reflected it first," notes the critic Tim Page. WNYCs Sara Fishko speaks with thinkers, authors, musicians, art curators, and historians about this unsettling era of sweeping change and the not-so-subtle ways in which it mirrors our own uncertain age. Title: Studio 360: Andrew McCarthy & Theater for the People
Author: Kurt Andersen
Narrator: Kurt Andersen
Format: Original Recording
Length: 52 mins
Language: English
Release date: 09-29-12
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews

Publisher's Summary:
North Korea is such an insular nation that almost any glimpse of life in the country makes news. This week is the countrys Pyongyang Film Festival, drawing crowds of North Koreans to the rare opportunity to see foreign (but not American) film. But also screening is a film that shows how North Korea would like the world to see it: Comrade Kim Goes Flying.
Next, if you were alive in the 1980s, you, or someone you loved, had a crush on Andrew McCarthy. He played Blane McDonnagh, the rich kid who captures the heart of Molly Ringwalds character in the teen drama Pretty in Pink. He went on to star in films like St. Elmos Fire and Weekend At Bernies, and had many roles on television. But when he woke up to adult life, McCarthy quietly took on a second career. He became a serious travel writer, contributing to National Geographic Traveler, The New York Times, and The Atlantic, among others.
Then, New York is the epicenter of American theater, but it's not just because of Broadway. A mid-size theater complex downtown is arguably the most important incubator for new theater today: The Public Theater. Fifty years ago its founder, Joseph Papp, started Shakespeare in the Park, offering world-class productions outdoors each summer for free. And in the years since, the Public Theater has premiered dozens of groundbreaking works, including Hair, A Chorus Line, That Championship Season, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide, and Passing Strange.
Next, growing up in Brooklyn, Sandra Shermans view of the world was limited. I was supposed to go to Brooklyn College, if I went to college at all, stay at home, and become a high-school teacher just like my parents, she remembers. And I felt very claustrophobic in a sense in that everybody I knew was pushing me to be somebody that I didnt really feel that I wanted to be.
And finally, in the cliche version of the immigrant story, the hardworking parents want their first-generation kids to become doctors, engineers, lawyers to have a more comfortable life and social prestige. Chhan Huy fled Cambodia during its horrific civil war in the 1970s, and settled with his family in California. He was an engineer himself, and a passionate rock musician, so his dream for his daughter Bochan was different: he wanted her to become a pop star. [Broadcast Date: September 29, 2012]

Title: Studio 360: Hilary Hahn Improvs & Kids Blog
Author: Kurt Andersen
Narrator: Kurt Andersen
Format: Original Recording
Length: 53 mins
Language: English
Release date: 07-28-12
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews

Publisher's Summary:
Adam Gopnik has written frequently too frequently, he laments about the gun rampages that convulse America. Following the recent attack at a Colorado movie theater showing The Dark Knight Rises, Gopnik wrote in The New Yorker, The killings will go on; the cell phones in the pockets of dead children will continue to ring; and now parents can be a little frightened every time their kids go to a midnight screening of a movie designed to show them what stylized fun violence can be.
Next, earlier this summer, one second was added to the earth's official atomic clock. Turns out the earth is slowing by a few milliseconds a year. If we didn't add these "leap seconds" to the official world clock every few years, experts say the time could stack up and ultimately mess up the calendar.
Then, Planet Tad, a new kids book by Daily Show head writer Tim Carvell, is about a 12-year-old who starts a blog in hopes of attracting the attention of Natalie Portman. He struggles with middle school, his little sister, standard preteen fare. But Henry Alford wanted to find out how well it stacked up to reality.
After that, a couple weeks ago, Kurt Andersen talked with the music critic Tim Page about great music thats been overplayed to the point of inanity. Call it death by heavy rotation and not even the Beatles are immune. Im a guy in his late 50s, Page said, and Ive been listening to, say, Sgt. Pepper since I was 13 or 14. I dont need to hear it again.
And finally, Hilary Hahn is a heavy hitter in classical music, a violinist who debuted at 12 and recorded the Bach partitas at 18. Shes powered through the repertoire, mastering Paganini, the Mozart sonatas, the Brahms concerto, Schoenberg, Ives. In her ripe old 20s, she began stretching beyond classical music, playing alongside singer-songwriters like Josh Ritter. Her new project goes even further outside the box.

Author: Kurt Andersen
Narrator: Kurt Andersen
Format: Original Recording
Length: 53 mins
Language: English
Release date: 08-04-12
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews

Publisher's Summary:
Its easy to overlook public art until it suddenly disappears. Recently, Penn State removed its statue of the late football coach Joe Paterno after a huge outcry (both for and against keeping it). Last year, Maines governor made the controversial decision to remove a mural that celebrated the labor movement, housed at the states Department of Labor.
Next, who would have thought that the fresh-faced, dopey bartender on the TV show Cheers would turn into one of the most versatile, prolific actors of his time? Woody Harrelson has played a stone-faced Marine, a porn king, and a sociopathic criminal. Hes just arrived Off-Broadway in two new roles: playwright and director.
Then, the pink ribbon has been an incredibly successful piece of marketing for breast cancer research. For cancer survivor Leonor Caraballo, though, it's supremely annoying. "Ive always hated the color pink," she says. "I dont like the association between the infantilization of pink and women."
And finally, growing up in the socially tumultuous 1960s, Jonathan Amsbary wanted to be a lawyer to "help America be what it was supposed to be." He idealized TVs Perry Mason, the righteous defense attorney who stood up for the little guy and always made sure justice was done. Narrator: Kurt Andersen
Format: Original Recording
Length: 53 mins

Publisher's Summary:
You probably shop at Costco for great deals on buckets of salsa and crates of toilet paper. But earlier this fall, the discount giant began selling high-quality fine art including works by Matisse and Warhol in its online store.
Next, from a wannabe rock star in School of Rock, to a Mexican wrestler in Nacho Libre, Jack Black is probably the closest thing in Hollywood to a superstar clown. Hes been described as big, obnoxious, and funny in a slightly terrifying way.
Then, the Cold War was terrifying, but we have to admit: it made for some great entertainment, from Dr. No to Dr. Strangelove. And then there was the kid-friendly version: The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. That all-American squirrel and his pal the moose first sauntered across TV screens in 1959, hotly pursued by Boris and Natasha the Russian-accented spies with a knack for falling on their own grenades.
And finally, Diana Kralls interpretations of mid-century jazz standards have won her two Grammys and sold many millions of albums worldwide. For her new record Glad Rag Doll the singer and pianist mined the music of her childhood. Although she grew up in the 1970s, she was raised on her dads collection of 78 rpm records from 1920s and '30s. [Broadcast Date: October 13, 2012]

The annual comics extravaganza Comic-Con International is underway, with 125,000 fans geeking out at the San Diego Convention Center. And that doesnt count all the film and TV stars on hand to court them: from Robert Downey, Jr., talking up Iron Man 3 to HBO producers peddling Game of Thrones.
Next, it isnt easy to put a fresh spin on A Streetcar Named Desire, one of the most acclaimed plays in American theatre, with its caricatured Brando scream of Stella! A new production on Broadway aims to shake things up, putting black and Latino actors in the lead roles.
Then, a couple years ago, Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar for directing The Hurt Locker. It wasnt quite the tipping point for women many in the industry had hoped for: of the 250 major movies that came out last year in the US, women directed only 5% of them. But when it comes to commercial and critical breakthroughs among independent films, a shift seems to be happening.
And finally, Dirty Projectors manage to be both avant-garde and accessible the band plays experimental rock you can still dance to. Theyve collaborated with Bjork and David Byrne, and been covered by Solange Knowles (sister of Beyonce). [Broadcast Date: July 14, 2012]

Title: Studio 360: Are Computers Creative?
Author: Kurt Andersen
Format: Original Recording
Length: 54 mins
Language: English
Release date: 07-07-12
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews

Publisher's Summary:
Computers have taken over an astonishing array of tasks humans used to do. They fly our planes, give us directions, recommend books, set us up on dates. But can they tell us a good story?
Next, AARON is the worlds first cybernetic artist: an artificially intelligent system that composes its own paintings. Incredibly, the system is the work of one man, Harold Cohen, who had no background in computing when he began the effort.
Then, to make art, a computer first needs to understand what art is. A group of computer scientists at Brigham Young University is attempting this by feeding their program images by the thousands and describing those images. Digital Artist Communicating Intent (she goes by DARCI) recognizes about 2,000 adjectives so far, including terms like peaceful, scary, and dark. The goal is to teach DARCI to pick out those visual qualities in artwork and ultimately, to write algorithms modeling creativity for artificial intelligence.
Then, Patrick Winston is Principal Investigator at MIT's Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab. He believes that creating better artificial intelligence is not a matter of more powerful processing: we have to teach computers how to think more like humans.
And finally, Harvard physicist Lisa Randall is at the forefront of the search for new theories about how the universe works. Shes especially interested in dark matter and is involved in work at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. And although her work requires complex math and work on the theoretical level, she manages to write about the universe in laymans terms. [Broadcast Date: July 7, 2012]

Title: Studio 360: Campaign Ads & Steampunk Chic
Author: Kurt Andersen
Narrator: Kurt Andersen
Format: Original Recording
Length: 53 mins
Language: English
Release date: 10-06-12
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews

Publisher's Summary:
The real problem with campaign ads today, Kurt Andersen thinks, isnt that theyre mean, or contain fuzzy numbers. Its that theyre boring. Why? In the 1950s, when the first campaign commercials hit TV, they were created by the top advertising talent of Madison Avenue starting with 1952s catchy jingle for Dwight Eisenhower. In 1968, an ad famously belly-laughed at Spiro Agnew as a candidate for vice president. "The same people that would do great commercials for products and services would also do political commercials," advertising veteran Bob Gardner tells Kurt. But this ended a few decades ago. The political priesthood took over and they decided that Madison Avenue did not know how to do political ads, that political ads were a breed apart, and that was not the same thing as selling soap and toothpaste."
Next, Mark Helprin has been a scholar, soldier, farmer, commentator, and a speechwriter (unpaid, he insists) for Bob Dole. Hes best known, though, as a writer of great fiction, and his 1983 Winters Tale is widely regarded as a classic.
Then, Steampunk a term that once referred to a few science-fiction authors has become one of todays most influential design styles. From a handful of hobbyists encasing their iPads in Victorian brass fittings or inventing mock Old West ray guns, steampunk has become a Simpsons punchline (I just hope we put in enough steampunk, worries Homer, whatever that is).
Next, theres a generation of younger musicians who grew up with rock, pop, and punk, but studied classical composition and love the diversity of sounds it offers. Shara Worden is one of this new movement's brightest upcoming stars. Worden trained as an opera singer, but classic American pop has been just as strong an influence. "I grew up listening to a lot of soul music and there are strings and horns all over those Motown records, she tells Kurt Andersen.
And finally, recently, Kurt Andersen looked back at MTVs Golden Age with Craig Marks, author of I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution. We asked for your favorite videos from that late, lamented pre-Jersey Shore era. [Broadcast Date: October 6, 2012]
