I gave up after about 3 minutes because I couldn't stand to listen to such a lovely story being butchered like this. Genuinely didn't listen to more than the first tiny bit, so the "story" review is based on the books.

Members Reviews: Excellent Narration of a Delightful Classic When siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to adopt a little orphan boy from the asylum, dreamy and talkative Anne Shirley arrives by mistake. Matthew is immediately smitten with the little redhaired orphan, and although she holds out longer, Marilla can't help loving her either. With her many mishaps, funny quaint speeches and her fierce loyalty, Anne will win her way into your heart as well. LM Montgomery wrote that she was no good at writing a young girl romantic love story, but what she created with this alternative family unit is even more special. Gentle Matthew as a father figure, instantly and unconditionally loving Anne. Stern Marilla as a maternal figure, desperate to raise Anne as best she can, but scared by the depth of her love for the girl. And the whole neighborhood of Avonlea as a host of aunts and uncles, offering advice and censure for the little waif who never quite fit in. Anne herself defies description. She's eternally optimistic, glossing over her own neglected background. She's loving and loyal, unconditionally giving of herself. She's imaginative, creating dream worlds she shares with her friends. Anne has her share of faults too, she's hotheaded and vain, which lead to some of her more memorable mishaps. It makes her infinitely human and lovable. I'm glad I read these books at such a young age, and I would recommend sharing these books with younger readers. There are so many lessons we can learn from Anne. This was my first time listening to an audio version of this book, and it was a wonderful performance. Laurel Schroeder has a young sensitive voice, and she brought a touch of vulnerability at just the right places. She really captured the spirit of Anne. During conversations she changed her pitch slightly to easily convey who was speaking. She never overacted, her easy pace allows the listener to interpret the emotions portrayed. I received a copy of the audiobook and I'm voluntarily leaving a review. I do hope that this narrator continues to bring the rest of the series to life. Classic story with Awesome Narration! Years ago I had read this book and liked the story. I found that I really enjoyed this audiobook even more. This is such a classic story and I found the narrator added so much to it. The book is appropriate for all ages as it is a clean listen. The timeless appeal of this reminiscent listen is comforting. I found the narrator to be quite fitting for this book, and I thought she was able to fit the various ages of Anne in this book. Laurel Schroeder is a truly gifted performer! She adds so much emotion to the characters and is able give the listener such visuals to the story.

Unless you're desperate for a bad copy of an earlier book, maybe give it a pass dismally bad Mother Goose pages. I had a hard time making out the complete poem. Sometimes not at all. I remember Mother Goose! This is the same Mother Goose I remember as a girl (60+ years ago) at my grandma's house. Familiar and new rhymes that my four year-old granddaughter loves. My only dislike of this edition is that it is not sized to fit all of some of the longer rhymes on the same page . They seem to get lost when turning a page and are difficult to retrieve.

Good book A classic children's book that never gets old. I bought it for my daughter and we read a chapter every night. The only issue I have is that it's a little smaller than I expected, but that's okay. Fun and ridiculous, as intended Playful poetry may be more amusing for adults. In any case I finally learned about the Boogum. What fun! Theres some discussion that there is a hidden message in his poem. If so, I admit to it being way over my head! Italicized Text?! I really wanted to like this--the original illustrations are beautifully reproduced--but bizzarely, half the books are italicized in their entirety, making them pretty much unreadable. If this were fixed, I'd give this 5 stars. Outstanding, of course. There is nothing for me to add to the mountains of praise already out there for this masterpiece of nonsense literature â arguably the finest sustained piece there is, with only William Gilbert and Thomas Hood to rival it. As the Victioran languge is sometimes a little dated, readers might care to go instead for Martin Gardnerâs Annotated verion that explains everything in detail (too much detail for some tastes). When I read Thief, by Brom I thought he was probably over exaggerating the character of Peter Pan.That book is very dark and Peter is fairly evil, and the book should not be read by kids, I now think he did not exaggerate that much. Do not get me wrong though, even though Peter Pan is no John Boy from the Waltons, this is one great book. It is cleverly written and entertaining at all times. I love kid books that don't talk down to the kids and has real life like characters, personality wise that is. ONE GIRL IS MORE USE THAN 20 BOYS Some may not like the role Wendy plays as mother and not as an adventurer, but I believe the whole book to be more about the value of women and mothers, than anything else. The Lost Boys and the Pirates fall in love with Wendy, because they want a mother. There are lots of examples of the importance of women in the story. GIRLS ARE MUCH TOO CLEVER TO FALL OUT OF THIER PRAMS WAS IT NOT BAD FORM TO THINK ABOUT GOOD FORM Several adult themes are hit on, and it seems that proper gentleman take a huge hit in this. YOU SILLY ASS The narrator was okay. I gave him five stars, but there are 27 different readings, so there might be better. He was not great. Don't get an abridged version. There are several of those and the writing is to good, to skip any of it.

Members Reviews: Textbook with a plot Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? Yes, I just might. The book is a well made classic that offers many awe inspiring mental pictures for the imagination. What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting? The tree house is very entertaining in its description however I really felt throughout the book as if I were being fed a bitter medicine with a spoonful of honey. If you pay close attention a reader could easily come away with a working knowledge of a diverse number topics such as religion, plants, animals, sailing, and several others. What about Dick Hills performance did you like? He offered a good fatherly feel to the entire story. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? I loved how appreciative the entire family were to each other in every instance. This makes me want to improve the relations in my own family. Any additional comments? I really enjoyed this for what it is however it seemed as though the necessary suspension of disbelief was stretched pretty thin in places.

I am disappointed. although, it is a little better than what I found on libravox, but not by much.

Members Reviews: The Best Kindle Option Available I took a gamble on buying this edition when no one had reviewed it yet. I tried several other Kindle editions available and had found them truly appalling in terms of formatting. This however, is significantly better, featuring well structured chapter breaks and all the original illustrations, which enhance the story a lot. Furthermore, considering it contains both books, plus the excellent Hunting of the Snark, it is a fantastic price. However, there are still some glaring mistakes, such as some formatting bugs in a few of the poems and spelling errors in places (such as at the start of Looking Glass, where some of the Ls are replaced with 1s - I guess a scanner did the 'writing here'). 5 stars for the great price and superior formatting over the other options. -1 star for the glaring lack of proof reading from the publisher. Good book A classic children's book that never gets old. I bought it for my daughter and we read a chapter every night. The only issue I have is that it's a little smaller than I expected, but that's okay. Fun and ridiculous, as intended Playful poetry may be more amusing for adults. In any case I finally learned about the Boogum. What fun! Theres some discussion that there is a hidden message in his poem. If so, I admit to it being way over my head! Italicized Text?! I really wanted to like this--the original illustrations are beautifully reproduced--but bizzarely, half the books are italicized in their entirety, making them pretty much unreadable. If this were fixed, I'd give this 5 stars. Outstanding, of course. There is nothing for me to add to the mountains of praise already out there for this masterpiece of nonsense literature â arguably the finest sustained piece there is, with only William Gilbert and Thomas Hood to rival it. As the Victioran languge is sometimes a little dated, readers might care to go instead for Martin Gardnerâs Annotated verion that explains everything in detail (too much detail for some tastes). My wife sits in the hall of the children's bedrooms and reads these stories to them at bedtime. The difference between these books and the traditional novels is that these stories move very fast. My son, in particular, will hear one of these abridged classic novels and, if he likes it, will then read the full unabridged version on his own. Kind of gives our kids a taste of the classics without having to start reading a really large and sometimes overwhelming looking book. My son is 10 and my daughter is 15. We have about 30 of these types of books in our library. A Classic Still Like many people of my age (62), I read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a child because at that time it was widely perceived to be a child's or young adult's book. This is unfortunate as it is not nor has it ever been directed at the young. In my rereading I discovered for the first time why it is still called the original great American novel. Huckleberry, like Twain, is opinionated and perceptive. His narration and point of view drive the novel forward. Rather than relegate this work to the children's shelves or castigate it as racist, folks should embrace this novel for what it is, a bildungsroman that shows the growth of a country as well as the growth of its young protagonist. It captivated a classroom full of surly teens I teach English, and the junior year in North Carolina is devoted to American literature. I approached Huck Finn with no small amount of trepidation because of Twain's use of vernacular. I ran into the same problem with "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and solved that by listening to Ruby Dee's audio recording, which students loved. I purchased this recording of Huck Finn, and it was to die for fabulous. Students read along in their books as we listened to the recording, and it helped bring the characters and the story alive for them. They laughed when I hoped they would laugh, and they understood the novel so much better by being able to listen to it. This recording was invaluable. Reading this book as an adult is a whole different ... Reading this book as an adult is a whole different experience. I'm fairly sure the versions I read as a child were watered down. I don't have any memory of murder and mayhem in the versions I read as a child. All the same it was highly entertaining and deserving of being a classic. Friendship and mischieviousness. I grew up reading this book, a story about Huckleberry Finn and his adventurous life on the Mississippi River as a boy. He would be considered a hoodlum in this day and age, at the time it was written he was an orphan and had no one to help him grow with morals however he is a rather a good boy with pretty good morals and this story is a classic. The story is also about friendship.

I wonder exactly how many people have died, pulled North to the Wild by the romantic pen of Jack London. I finished a while back and was crying as I listened to it with my kids. Norman Dietz did an OK job narrating, but his stretched sonorant vowels kinda drove me nutty after awhile. I didn't have the dedication or endurance to listen to long stretches of Dietz describe the frooooooont and reeeaaaaaar of London's cooooold siiiiiiilent landscaaaaaaaaaaaaaapes. Love! I absolutely loved every minute of this book. White Fang is very enjoyable. Great listen. Great tale of man/animal interaction White Fang from troubled youth, to terrible teenage years to redemption, love and understanding ... dogs are amazing teachers! I love Norman Dietz as a narrator! If you could sum up White Fang in three words, what would they be? Real, honest, adventure What was one of the most memorable moments of White Fang? When the California man stops the dog fight and "buys" White Fang! What about Norman Dietzs performance did you like? He is my all time favorite narrator, I search out the books he reads. He is very talented! Classic Story Jack London was a famous author so there should not be any doubt about the contents. Story was great. The audio was easy to listen to and I liked it a lot. There is nothing negative to say about this audio book.

Members Reviews: Classic Sinclair I've read this over 20 years ago and I'm rereading it again, just to remind me what life is like if you don't speak up for your rights! Great Book from an era that we maybe repeating, hopefully not. In short, this a fictional (may have possibly happened) story is about an eastern European immigrant couple in search of the "American Dream", but due to extreme unsafe working/living conditions and class inequality, they ultimately succumb to the crushing wheels of progress of the Industrial Revolution. Makes you happy to live in this century This is the story of Jurgis, a Lithuaian immigrant who works in the stockyards of Chicago around the turn of the century. How much have we taken for granted in our day to day lives? Sinclair does a great job of conveying the terrible hardship faced by the unskilled labor force, and what gross injustices were plied against them in their ignorance. I couldn't escape the constant thought of "This could've been me." My ancestors were immigrants and undoubtedly worked in similar conditions.how possibly could people have survived with any hope, with any belief in the goodness of mankind? A telling, frightening story which everyone should be required to read. Beautifully written, compelling story line. Have times changed much? I'd like to think that packing houses are cleaner and safer now. However, the greed at the top is just as bad and this is what struck me most from the book. We seem to be in an environment of an increasing gap of wealth between the average worker and those at the top. Left unchecked, we might see a worker revolution here in the USA. The Jungle as Life This is an important reflection on U.S. society that shows that as much as things have changed in the last century, they really haven't. Originally written to inform and upset the public on the realities of the meat industry, it is also a lesson on survival and Darwinistic behaviors on all levels, and in all demographic sectors. The story goes into history, sociology, social psychology, civil studies, political science, agronomy, economy, and more. You finish the book with not only a new knowledge, but a deeper understanding of how you yourself fits into your modern society and community. Good for rounding out your "classic" reads. I've wanted to read this for quite awhile, as I know that it is considered a classic. It was very useful in informing me of some of the issues of the era in which it was written/set. The author obviously had some passion around the issues and presented the story in a heart wrenching manner. All of that I appreciated.

Growing up is hard to do This is a story about a surprisingly new way to enlighten children with reference to growing up, and Wendy found that out when she was two. Growing up was a way of life. We can't stay young forever. But there was one boy who had defied that logic. Peter Pan was that boy. Wendy was the oldest of three children in the Darling family. John came next, then Michael. There was also a nurse. A Newfoundland dog named Nana, who knew sign language. One night as Peter Pan followed Tinker Bell, a tiny fairy, to the Darling home, looking for his shadow, he found it hidden in a drawer, and was trying to put it back on with soap. Who or what hid his shadow? Was it Nana or Mrs. Darling and why? About that time Wendy woke up and was startled by him being there and offered to help him. After coming up with a surprising trick the shadow stuck. Once Peter heard what a wonderful story teller Wendy was he wanted her and the boys to come to Neverland and tell her stories to the other children. He told her it was a magical place filled with adventure and where a child would never grow up. So the three children followed Peter to Neverland. But while they were there, bad things began to happen, like adventures with pirates and indian attacks. Wendy and the boys began to miss home and wanted to go back.But after a little while they began to forget about home and their parents. Will the three children ever make it back home again, or will they have to stay forever in Neverland? These and many more questions will be answered once you read "Peter Pan," a wonderful book written for children of all ages. It will feed your imagination, because there was one unique thing that Peter Pan could do that no other young person could do. He could fly. The format was well done. Liked the book also. I had never read Peter Pan and was surprised by how dark it is. I enjoyed it more than I have the presentations by Disney and others. The companion works by the same author about Peter Pan are included and I liked them as well. I don't know the history of the stories but the "White Bird" and Kensington Gardens books seem to be earlier versions of the Peter Pan concept.

Members Reviews: Unforgettable imagery What a beautiful book. I received it when I was a child as a Christmas gift in the early 70's. Even though it was misplaced for many years, I never forgot it. I purchased it this year for my 7 year old niece and she too is captivated by the imagery. There are dozens of quirky silhouette portraits of characters whose humanity is instantly recognizable. The text is pleasant, but it would take Shakespeare to measure up to the illustrations of this rendering of Sleeping Beauty. Rather old fashioned language makes it quite a challenge for a younger or less skilled reader, but it is a good book to read at bedtime in installments and the illustrations by Rackham are enchanting. Lovely Version of the Tale Beautifully told version of The Sleeping Beauty. This isn't the original version but a very very good one. I think CS Evans wrote it in the 20s. A lovely read which I highly recommend. I had forgotten. much of the story and replaced it with the Disney version which I don't think is very good, but I know I was exposed to this version many years ago as a child. Five Stars Arrived quickly & as described. Thanks. Charming free download The Sleeping Beauty is a classic fairytale, one everyone should read. There are some odd formatting errors in this edition though. There are headings stuck in random bits of the text, I think they might be the titles of missing illustrations? Also on some pages the text condenses into a single, narrow column for no apparent reason. But, hey, it was free... One of my favorite stories of all time! I chose this rating because this book was very well written. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

While I am no expert on English accents, Moll Flanders' accent seems appropriate, and I loved listening to it. The whole book wasn't read I had the book and when I tried to read it and listen to it at the same time there were a lot of gaps that wasn't included in the audio book Awesome This is easily my favorite book to listen to on tape, as well as my favorite book I've never read. I've listened to it probably 5 times since I first heard it as a child and it still makes me laugh, smile, occasionally shed a tear, and frequently say "what the hell Moll!" Nadia May gives an excellent performance as Mrs. Flanders and the novel is one of the best in the English language canon. Funny, smart, and a fascinating look at life in times long past. Perfect Voice For This Tale! Where does Moll Flanders rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far? Right at the top! There are so many recordings that have been done of this story, I ended up choosing this narrator, because she sounded closest to what I imagined our Miss Molly might have sounded like! I was not disappointed in the least. What other book might you compare Moll Flanders to and why? I can't. To me, it's a very unique story. Which scene was your favorite? A classic for me is when Moll is describing the old Baronet while he's drunk and wanting to have his way with her. The description of the nature of a drunken man is beautifully written and expressed. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Never could have, it's far too long, though I might have, if I'd had all those hours to just sit and listen! Any additional comments? I became fascinated by Moll Flanders after seeing the Alex Kingston performance on television from the 90s. I had bought the book, but became frustrated by the old English spellings, so thought I'd try the audiobook. I really am glad I made that decision! Great novel, beautifully read First, Nadia May does a fantastic job reading this novel. She brings out the satire, where appropriate, but without laying it on too thick. She animates the characters, but especially Moll herself. The pathos of some of their stories comes through as well, and the HORROR of Newgate Prison. The story itself is full of sympathy for its main character, almost, it seems, despite Defoe's stated Whig tendencies. I would definitely listen again!

The stories were wonderful to listen to in the car on the way to school and other long rides. Both the kids and the adults in my family loved the Naxos classics and learned so much over the years. Our Island Story is a reading of the famous and beloved classic by H.E. Marshall, published in 1905. The author's intention was to write a storybook, rather than an accurate history of England. However, these stories contain far more fiction than fact. They are biased and judgmental, and I didn't care for the content. I do recommend the other excellent Naxos titles available. I hope your family will enjoy them as much as we did!

A book of delightful short stories and poem-song 'The Jungle Book' by Rudyard Kipling is a book of delightful short stories and poem-songs about talking animals. Five of the stories follow Mowgli, who as a human toddler was separated from his parents after Shere Khan, the tiger, tried to attack the family in the jungles of India. Instead of ending up as a meal for Shere Khan, Mowgli is raised eventually by two wolves who see him as one of their cubs. But first, a meeting was called and the ethics of adopting a manchild were debated by the pack. The matter is settled when Baloo, the bear, agrees to accept Mowgli as a student to teach him the Law of the Jungle; and Bagheera, the black panther, agrees to take the pack to a newly killed bull in exchange for Mowgli's acceptance into the pack. The wolf pack take the deal, but Shere Khan becomes Mowgli's mortal enemy. Mowgli has a number of adventures which are not all entirely pleasant, but I have this strong feeling it was on the whole fun to be a feral child! Other talking animal stories are included which showcase a variety of wild and domesticated animals who find Mankind and Nature directs them towards certain choices and troubles. Their personalities and inclinations direct their fates somewhat, but, gentle reader, I found them all to be wonderful creatures. However, I admit to favoring Rikki Tikki Tavi, the mongoose, most of all! Mature children will adore this book, especially if they are able to get an edition with illustrations, but if you are familiar with the Disney movie version only, I must emphasize the unabridged book version has animal deaths, by hunting. Classic tale with some unusual chapters This is my first time to read this classic story and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. The first few chapters do remind you of the Disney movie and I thought it had a fun appeal for kids and adults alike. However, when we read the chapter "White Seal", I was confused. It seemed odd to jump from the jungle with Mowgli to a story about Kotick, the white seal.

The more recent one is my favorite. Good Lessons and Representation of various Personalities I really enjoyed this book and the personalities represented. The only thing I didn't completely enjoy was the impression that I got that works are the way to heaven and the careful wording in regards to Biblical concepts, but I understand why an author may do so to keep from turning people off from the good lessons that can be drawn from this book. Best book <3 Best book ever! LITTLE WOMEN is a classic I revisit so often I have parts of the text memorized. I loved the way it was set in the past (Civil War era) but the relationships and problems felt real, and that I could relate to them despite living in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, etc. Jo March is a spunky girl with a good heart who doesn't always do the right thing and I think many women and men can relate to that. The writing is good enough, and never really drags but I do wish some parts had slowed downâdespite thisâa very serious favorite of mine.

I've read the book, seen the films and now finally I've listened to the book being read by another via this audio book. I truly love it and cannot recommend enough.

Members Reviews: All the ingredients, but this book does not work for me Treasure, adventure, suspense, deceit, a charismatic bad guy, good guys on the run, history coming to life, threats everywhere, games of deadly hide-and-seek -- this book has everything! I don't know why, though, but the book just left me feeling flat. I've read and enjoyed other classic kids and YA books such as "The Three Musketeers" and "Little Women", but this one was like a ride on a roller-coaster ... on a day when I'd rather be at the planetarium. Treasure island Fun story although very different from the movie I remember watching as a child. I did have to read some things twice as this was not a book I could read with distractions due to the dialogue. Overall. It was good an I am glad I read it. Brush up on your Pirate speak and grab ye map, matey. Treasure Island: loaded with lots of gun play and swashbuckling action; just what every boy needs in his life. This is guaranteed to exercise the imagination of young and old alike. Themed around the hunting of treasure, I think the story is more a study in character, morels and integrity. Oh, and donât forget the cool geographic descriptions of Skeleton Island; be sure to read the second half of the book with a treasure map handy if at all possible. My kids loved it They. Ant really sit through listening to it being read to them seeing that it doesn't have pictures; but being able to read it and relate the story to them was a satisfying experience for us. Thank you Kindle Not a good audio experience Ordered as an audio book but had to listen to with the text to audio version which is mechanical and therefore difficult to listen to. If I did something wrong then I apologize for being technically inept. The book itself is a classic and I enjoyed the story very much, but it was painful to listen to without the correct tones and inflections.

Again, though as in Wonderland, in her encounters she has to understand her newly found societal explanations of what is and what is not to get to play the game of life. Leslie Brooke was a British illustrator, not an author. As usual, there are no illustrations in the free Kindle edition of this story. However, the illustrations were easy to find on the web. The author of this little volume is listed as unknown by those who converted it to digital. The story is the same or very similar to the circa 1886 version by James Halliwell-Phillipps. In this older version of the tale there is not a happy ending for all, just for the third little pig. My 7 year old (and my wife who was listening) liked the story better than the sanitized versions. My 7 year old says, "It was kind of creepy the way the wolf ate the first two pigs. It was different the way the third pig ate the wolf instead of the way it is in the other one." This review is from the free Kindle edition published May 12, 2012. Alas, NO Artwork... This THREE LITTLE PIGS story is a very old version, so that in this book the Wolf eats the first two little piggies, and is himself eaten at the end. It's a version that includes the bit about how the Wolf tried to trick the pig into going with him to get turnips, apples, and to the fair, but the Pig is one step ahead of him. It's well told, but unfortunately there are none of the illustrations from Mr. Brooke. Given that deficit I think moms might want to look for an alternative version if they like this one. Oh, and while it's a good read-aloud, you might want to look up the word "furze", because that's what the Pig #2 uses to build his house :) Pam T~ mom/fur-mom Great Book I purchased the Kindle for my daughter through Amazon and the books are great and very informative.My daughter is eleven years old and is pretty picky about what she chooses to read. However she seems to love and enjoy all the books she orders from Amazon. Burgessâs anthropomorphic characters embody the innocence and purity of youth and a past Golden Age. Perhaps itâs nostalgia, but modern childrenâs books donât reflect the same level of craft that these tales do. Anyone with kids not yet teens would likely enjoy reading this book to them or anything else by T. W. Burgess. Original Harrison Cady Illustrations (This review is for the paperback edition published by Dover Publications in 2000) This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. Plus, unlike many of these Dover editions of Thornton Burgess' books, it has honest-to-god original Harrison Cady illustrations. Harrison Cady did two sets of drawings for this title: -- Published by Little, Brown, with 6 full-page grayscale illustrations. -- Published by Grosset & Dunlap, with 14 full-page line drawings, including line-drawing versions of all 6 original grayscale illustrations in the Little, Brown editions, plus many smaller line drawings. Cady had also made a small illustration for each chapter for the original newspaper serialization of this story in 1914. Each of those was one newspaper column wide. This Dover edition has all the drawings, both full-page and small, from the Grosset & Dunlap editions. And they are very nicely reproduced. The only thing the Grosset & Dunlap editions have over this Dover edition is that the "Large, Easy-To-Read Type" might be easier on early readers. But if you're reading to your young kids, as I am, this Dover edition, with far more words per page, has the advantage that the pictures are in front of your kids longer and for a higher proportion of pages. Oddly, the copyright page says "This Dover edition is an unabridged republication of the work first published by Little, Brown, and Company, Boston, in 1917. It contains the original Harrison Cady illustrations." But that is not quite true. Aside from the front cover, it does not contain the 6 Cady illustrations from the 1917 Little, Brown edition. Instead, it contains the 14 Cady illustrations from the 1951 Grosset & Dunlap edition. If you like these illustrations, you might want to also look for a used Little, Brown edition. The Little, Brown grayscale illustrations better show Cady's remarkable vision for Burgess' creatures.

I grew up on some of these stories, and ... I grew up on some of these stories, and my kids did too -- as soon as I realized that there were many of these stories (written for a Boston newspaper in the 19th century) and they had been collected into a book. Take these stories in small doses. The silly pickles that the Perterkins get themselves into can seem repetitious after a while. The Peterkin Papers This is one of my favorite books from my childhood years. Now I read about this silly Peterkin Family to my granddaughter and she loves them, too. That is a shame because the "The Peterkin Papers" are wonderful little stories that small children can really engage ... This Kindle edition is faulty. There are missing sections and sometimes the first words of a story are not there. This needs to be digitized. The first part of the first story is not even there. Each child comes to the story with their own family issues and emotional baggage, yet have not lost the need to be liked or part of a bigger group. I found myself relating to these kids as Skomal wove a poignant picture of youthful adventure as well as heartache. She brought drama to the story that made it difficult for me to put this book down. I carried with me to read during work breaks and even while waiting for jury duty. When I finished reading the last page, I wanted to know what happened in these young children's lives. I became so engrossed in their situation, I wanted to know more about what became of them. As with Skomal's previous books, I found this one to be as thought provoking as her others which stayed with me long after I finished reading it. I highly recommend this book for middle school aged children and older, including adults. It's a keeper and one you will want you and your child to read to share all the different facets she presents in dealing with life, friendship and love. A great coming-of-age novel for anyone who loves a good read! I hated to see this book end, and I hope Lenore Skomal revisits these characters again. The story is told from the points-of-view of four kids growing up in 1954 Nebraska...Patsy, Hap, Beah, and Raz. Hap is the lone boy in the group, and acts as their leader, although it is Patsy, in my opinion, who really fills that role.

Spyri does a wonderful job of bringing the Alps to life, so much so, you can almost feel the brisk snowy air and hear the wind whispering through the trees. It's a sweet little fantasy, and well loved by generations for a good reason. I read it as a child and revisited it recently, and it was just as I remembered it after 40 some years, even better in fact because I appreciate the deeper themes so much better. Human nature is one thing that doesn't change, and the story of Heidi gives a lot of talking points for parents and grandparents to share with children, probably the 9 to 11 year old crowd, both boys and girls.

Furthermore, considering it contains both books, plus the excellent Hunting of the Snark, it is a fantastic price. However, there are still some glaring mistakes, such as some formatting bugs in a few of the poems and spelling errors in places (such as at the start of Looking Glass, where some of the Ls are replaced with 1s - I guess a scanner did the 'writing here'). 5 stars for the great price and superior formatting over the other options. -1 star for the glaring lack of proof reading from the publisher. Good book A classic children's book that never gets old. I bought it for my daughter and we read a chapter every night. The only issue I have is that it's a little smaller than I expected, but that's okay. Fun and ridiculous, as intended Playful poetry may be more amusing for adults. In any case I finally learned about the Boogum. What fun! Theres some discussion that there is a hidden message in his poem. If so, I admit to it being way over my head! Italicized Text?! I really wanted to like this--the original illustrations are beautifully reproduced--but bizzarely, half the books are italicized in their entirety, making them pretty much unreadable. If this were fixed, I'd give this 5 stars. Outstanding, of course. There is nothing for me to add to the mountains of praise already out there for this masterpiece of nonsense literature â arguably the finest sustained piece there is, with only William Gilbert and Thomas Hood to rival it. As the Victioran languge is sometimes a little dated, readers might care to go instead for Martin Gardnerâs Annotated verion that explains everything in detail (too much detail for some tastes). I had heard so much about Jenni James and her flair for retelling fairy tales her own way and so when I got my hands on her book, I just had to read it. The Frog Prince retells the old and one of my favorite fairy tales very beautifully. The story is very different from the original one and it was very enchanting and very satisfying to read the book. The writing is simple and can be read by everyone easily without any fuss about difficult words. The plot is beautifully executed and the characters are adorable and very much like our childhood favorites. I enjoyed reading the book and recommend it to teens and adults. A 4 out of 5 to The Frog Prince and I look forward to reading more from Jenni in the future. I loved seeing the story stretched out with more depth than the original. Blythe and Nolan find themselves dreading their arranged marriage(their only communication being through letters). Nolan decides that to be fair to his intended, he would test her before demeaning the match unsuitable. His solution: to turn himself into a frog for 30 days or until he receives a kiss from Blythe. He figures he can truly judge her character by how she treats a disgusting, slimy frog of no importance. I loved that there was a motive--and a good one--for the prince being a frog and requesting what he did of the princess. I thought at times that Nolan's interest in Blythe hinged(at first) a little too much on her looks and that he sometimes thought poorly of her for something that seemed silly to me. The second was acknowledged as Nolan begins to realize that things aren't always as they appear and his vanity and pre-determined ideas about Blythe color his view of her. I liked the light-hearted, humor that winds its way through the book and how the characters have ups and downs. In some ways this feels more like a MG story with the style(not a bad thing). My only real complaint is that at the end there's huge chunks of dialogue between the two characters that seemed too much like exposition of unnecessary details.

"The Cid" gracefully captures the sense of 11th century chivalry, honor and romance that was characteristic of the time. There is an intoxicating sweetness, a passion, pride and self-sacrifice in each these characters. And all the main characters are given a lot of weight in the storyline. I couldn't help but admire them all and the medieval world they came from. And the poetry and insight into love that each of the characters have is breathtaking: love of a father, love of a daughter, unrequited love, forbidden love, patriotic love- it's all in there! All of the characters feel a deep sense of obligation to satisfy each others sense of aesthetics and right and wrong- even the proud king feels this powerful obligation to his community. I sat down for two or three hours and read "The Cid" straight through. The translation is extremely clear and free of typos (even giving unobtrusive notes about the literal translations as you read) and it gives an important bit of background information on the history of El Cid- both the legend and the historical warrior. I chose one of the monologues as a classical audition piece. There are many good monologues in this translation for young women and for both young and old men. Le Cid de Corneille O rage, O désespoir, O vieillesse énemie. Que n'ai-je vécu tant d'années que pour cette infmie ? Rodrigue, As tu du coeur ? Et le combat cessa, faute de combattants. Ce sont quelques uns des vers inoubliables écrits par Coneille et qu'on retrouve, comme autant de vieux amis, en relisant la pièce. La tragédie est toute simple. Chimène aime Rodrige qui l'aime en retour. Tout semble bien aller quand le père de Chinène, jaloux d'une promotion accordée au père de Rodrige, se dispute avec lui et l'insulte d'un soufflet. Trop vieux pour laver son honneur, le père de Rodrigue somme son fils de le venger à sa place. Rodrigue, déchiré entre l'amour et le devoir, choisit l'honneur de sa famille et sort victorieux de son combat. Chimène perd son père et demande justice au Roi, tout en continuant à aimer Rodrige en secret. Le texte est complet. Cette édition n'a pas de notes explicatives et surtout, le texte est en interligne double.

Sin embargo, la mujer que leyó los poemas tiene un acento muy fuerte en español que los hicieron desagradables al oído y no se pueden disfrutar en su totalidad (creo que su acento es colombiano, demasiado fuerte en verdad). Además, los leyó sin alma y como si estuviera leyendo prosa en lugar de poesía. Y por otra parte, durante toda la lectura de poemas hay música de fondo que es totalmente innecesaria y distrae. Members Reviews: A quirky but worthwhile version I've been a fan of Tao te Ching for decades, and have read many translations. I like different nuances translators bring. This isn't my favorite translation, but it is slightly odd in an enjoyable way. I like clear-voiced British-inflected narration like this. It has an archaic sound, some lines are delivered in rhyme with an almost Victorian resonance. It might sound a bit sing-song to contemporary ears. It's interesting to contrast Lao Tzu (Tao te Ching) to Confucius (Analects), also available on audio. The contemporary Chinese government has leaned away from Lao Tzu and toward Confucius, for industrial-discipline and capitalism-compatibility reasons, obvious upon listening. Tao te Ching probably seems senseless or incomprehensible to many modern western listeners, and I suspect it would to my Chinese business students as well. But it has great depth for me. Marvelous Reading Where does Tao te Ching rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far? Marvelous, evocative reading. True jewel, memorable. Can be listened to many times with fresh insight and delight. Translation and Narration weren't great. One of the world's greatest philosophies, but this isn't the best way to learn about it. Harder to follow because of the narrator and outdated (aka slightly wrong) translation.

Le vers libre ainsi que l'absence de toute trace de ponctuation sont autant de marqueurs d'une poésie de la modernité qui donnera l'inspiration poétique à tout le courant surréaliste. ©1913 Mercure de France (P)2014 Éditions Thélème Avis des membres: when the book spells his name "guillame" ... took one look at the pos that arrived and went to amazon.fr to buy a gallimard version which, including shipping, cost ~ $29. minus shipping it was only ~6 euros (a bit over 8 bucks, compared to the $17 for this botched effort of publishing on demand). and that gallimard version includes the brief set of poems Le Bestiaire as well, with reproduced woodcuts by dufay. this book that i am ranting about -- i mean reviewing -- is horrific looking. the book is 7 7/8 x 10 inches, with poems only starting on odd numbered pages (which for some bizarre reason are on the left (verso) -- i tellya this book throws all publishing convention to the wind), so a short poem like "Automne" occupies the upper left corner of a broad two-page expanse of whiteness. There is a generic blurb on the back which says nothing specific to this book (it is sufficiently generic to apply to any "anthology" -- which alcools is not, anyway). The spine has nothing on it (no title or author). And of course the in only two spots where apollinaire's name appears, his prénom, as the frenchies say, is spelled "guillame". wth? i may have to hang on to this copy so i can take it out every few weeks and laugh at it. if i were reviewing this for content i would have to give it several stars. guillaume apollinaire is a cool poet -- obscure of meaning, vivid and concrete and unadorned in his language and imagery. this book is -- except for the strange formulaic blurb -- completely in french and the poems are untranslated. Alcools by Guillaume Apollinaire of Excellent collection of some of Apollinaire's best poetry from early in the 20th century=in French Broken kindle format On Kindle for Android, each and every accented character is broken (looking like a broken web page where character set has been improperly converted) , making it absolutely unreadable. In the poem, the Ancient Mariner speaks to the wedding guest and in real life the Ancient Mariner is Coleridge and we are the Wedding Guest. Brilliant, haunting work. Ancient Mariner and more, misprint This edition is the 'Coleridge's Ancient Mariner and Select Poems' edited by FREDERICK H. SYKES, PH.D., Teachers College, Columbia University. Published in 1908 by Poems'The Scribner English Classics. This book has 1594 locations, it contains more than just the poem 'The Ancient Mariner', there are other poems, an introduction and at the back of the book there are notes explaining the poem. The plus point of this edition is the extra information this book gives in the introduction and the notes, the minus point is that the poem itself is not printed in an easy to read way: the margin is not in a straight line, the extra line between the strophes is hardly visible; it has a 'restless' look. There is a free e-book version available online which only contains the poem (and not the extra's), but is printed in a nicer way, so that one is easier to read. So if you want the extra information, this is the best version, but if you just want to read the poem, the other version is a better choice. I downloaded both. This poem is best read on a larger screen (computer?) because then the sencenses do not need to be split in two, making it easier and more beautiful to read. I give the misprinted poems 1 star, but the extra information is worth 4 stars: so I have given this edition 3 stars. It is not possible to copy a bit of the poem in the way it is in the e-book, this review-site corrects the misprint of the Kindle-book automaticly. If you click on the book for a sample before you buy it, you will not see the problem that the Kindle-edition has: it does not have this problem on the computer. I can copy a bit from the notes, so you can see what kind of extra information it contains: *Page 3*, LINE 12--*eftsoons*. Anglo-Saxon _eftsona (eft_ afterwards, again, + _sona_ soon), renforced by the adverbial genitive ending _-s._ Coleridge found the word in Spenser and the old ballads. 4, 23--*kirk*. The Scotch and Northern English form of "church." The old ballads had been preserved chiefly in the North; hence this Northern form came to be looked on as the proper word for church in the ballad style. Members Reviews: Fragmentary The description of this Audiobook should have mentioned that this recording only covers the FIRST of the six books of the Faerie Queene. Specifically: It only contains the story of the Redcrosse Knight. (Yes, in hindsight, I now see hints of trouble: i.e., the running time of the recording and the reference in the description to an allegory of truth and error.) Nevertheless, because it was billed as the FAERIE QUEENE (and not just one-sixth of it), I ordered the darned thing. To make matters worse, I burned it to CD, and for some reason Audible's conversion program skips not just words but whole stanzas so that I now have a bunch of fragments of one book of the FAERIE QUEENE, rather than the whole thing. I have fragments of a fragment. Joy, joy. Case in point: The CD I ended up with contains, nowhere in it, the most famous line of the poem -- the first one ("A gentle knight was pricking on the plain..."). It reads off the first three words of that line and then jumps down seven lines; the two parts don't connect at all. Several stanzas latter, there's another skip. Then another. All the way through the entire book. All four of the CDs I ran off in my attempts to make this work do the same thing, and no CDs I burn through other programs do this, so I'm pretty sure this one's Audible's responsibility. I will be trying to get a refund, but am not optimistic. This buyer didn't beware; you should. Missing and repeated portions Following on the other reviews, the reading is excellent and the introductory summaries of the cantos are useful. However, my copy seems to repeat some sections of canto 3. At 4 hours I knew this reading couldn't include the whole work, but that a significant section of what's here is the same thing twice is not a pleasant surprise. Great Performance Nonetheless Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not? Recommended by a literature professor-friend, this abridged edition of The Faerie Queene was the first Audible book I purchased and the reason I joined Audible.com. I was aware the story had been significantly truncated. As other reviewers noted, however, even the chosen sections were chopped, so it was hard to follow with a printed text.

Told in language that is lush, sensual and highly inventive, Vis and Ramin is a masterpiece of psychological perceptiveness and characterization: Shahru is worldly and venal, the nurse resourceful and amoral (she will immediately remind Western readers of the nurse in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet), Vis high-spirited and determined, Ramin impetuous and volatile.
