Members Reviews: False advertising This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more? I downloaded this because 12 hours of goonery seemed hard to pass up. But beware, this is Milligan in a very minor key. Many of the episodes aren't truly Goon Shows at all, minus Sellers, Secombe and the stock Goon characters. Many seems to have been recorded in Australia and have no discernible plot or structure; although intermittently funny, they fall far short of classic Goon standards. And jokes are recycled shamelessly. Another gripe is that there are no "liner notes" that might put all this in context. When were they aired? Where? Who are the players? If you are a Goon fanatic (as I am) this might be worth it for the sake of completeness. But if you are new to the Goons and want to know what all the fuss is about, don't be swayed by the "12-hours-for-the-price-of-two" appearance. Start with the real, 95-proof stuff first. 90 pure goon Only the last four hours fall short of the real thing. These Australian episodes lack Neddy and also a clear narrative story upon which the Goonishness hangs. What you have is lots of unstructured silliness. It does show the genius of the authentic episodes. And included at the end are some radio documentaries and interviews; yet these are not why I bought this download however, and I have to admit to being a bit disappointed. However, you can't sneeze at eight hours of great Goon fun, so I won't be returning it. But a heads up, downloading one of the classic 2 hour Goon shows will give better value for money, even if shorter, the satisfaction will be greater. 90% proof. https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/The-Man-Upstairs-Classic-Tales-Edition-Audiobook/B01JSE4M5C Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Theatre Works Members Reviews: Ms Geeson at her finest This was always one of my favourite plays I loved it having seen the David Lean film version when I was a child. But much as I love the film, it cannot hold a candle to this marvellous production. For a start it is exceptionally well cast. Ian Ogilvie is perfectly cast as the misogynistic but still sympathetic Charles Condomine confused and then bemused by the appearance of his first wife, Elvira from beyond the grave. But the star of the show is undoubtedly Judy Geeson who steals every scene that she appears in with just the right touches of emotion, humour and downright devilishness. Her vowel sounds are a joy I could listen to her speak for hours! The story is simple but an absolute joy. This is without a doubt my favourite radio play in my vast collection! Well presented classic theatre Noel Coward is a playwright with timeless wit -- in both the dialogue and the plot. Blithe Spirit is a somewhat cheeky comedy, exploring reactions to the deceased wife (the blithe spirit) talking to the remarried spouse via a wonderfully portrayed clairvoyant and spirit medium. Coward is the epitome of the English playwright and the actors in this production are highly regarded British actors. I enjoyed the audience's reaction -- for me the immediacy of the theatre certainly added to the quality of the listening experience. Be careful what you wish for Fun screwball comedy about a writer who invites a medium over to get information for his book. During the séance he unwittingly calls back his dead wife. He's the only one who can see her, causing chaos. I watched the movie shortly after listening to this performance. Listen to this, and skip the movie. A Dry Martini for the ears. Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? Yes, just as an enjoyable way to spend the afternoon. What about the narrators???s performance did you like? They are all accomplished actors. The voices are different enough to easily distinguish them. It is a light and frothy play. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Yes, it is short and we were driving a long way. Any additional comments? A polished and elegant performance of a play written by a very clever wordsmith. Always A Favorite!! Timeless story in a brilliant dramatization. I love hearing the audience reaction; makes me feel like I'm really at the theater :) https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Design-for-Living-Audiobook/B002V1C4XW Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. I will now be looking out for a live performance and I do expect it will be an amateur theatre group who puts it on. First performed in the US in 1933. It does evoke the 1930's and I imagine it would be great fun and a challenge to perform well. Painfully bad The LA Theatreworks series is very hit-and-miss, and this one is definitely a miss! Admittedly, this is a difficult, perhaps even poor, Coward play. It depends on charm and style to carry it through. The three main actors have none, and the director seems only to have focused on ensuring that each word is clearly spoken. This is always a good idea in an audio performance but not enough to carry a play! Avoid this one, but do try some of the other plays in the series. Brilliant Play Massacred The play is a masterpiece. This is one of the few comedy shows that has made me laugh out loud on a Sunday morning (in spite of my hangover). Highlights include rounds such as 'new definitions for words' (such as Tomahawk - a vegetarian bird of prey) and 'sing the lyrics of one song to the tune of another'. Whether or not you have heard these stories before, you will want to listen to them again...and again. Members Reviews: Graham Chapman In Top Form Released in 2016, SPOT THE LOONY is a real surprise. If you're reading this review and wondering who Graham Chapman was, he was one of the members of Monty Python's Flying Circus. Usually he played brittle authority figures. Although the characters he played were usually fundamentally crazy, in the Python world, Chapman tended to be the straight man. What SPOT THE LOONY does is provide you with an uninterrupted hour of Graham Chapman's verbal dexterity. He was as good a raconteur as any of the other members of the troupe has proven to be. This is a recording of Graham Chapman speaking in front of an audience at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Brown's an Ivy league school. A British equivalent would be Cambridge or Oxford. This is exactly the audience he should have been speaking to, and they love him. The laughter is a constant roar. For about twenty minutes, he discusses the Dangerous Sports Club, a real organization he was part of, and this is as sustained a moment of comedy as you'll ever hear. It is P.G. Wodehouse with a violent streak. Graham Chapman also comes across as an extremely affable fellow. Obviously, we're eavesdropping on a beloved comedian talking to an audience of fans, but, nonetheless, he is disarmingly personable, and, after years of reading about the behind-the-scenes life of Python, I have to say I never expected to be delighted with a recording of this man. I expected to laugh, but I was not prepared to wish I had been able to be in an audience at his one-man show. I believe even casual fans of Monty Python will enjoy this as much as I did. and teaching John Cleese to ride a bicycle) and his participation in the Dangerous Sports Club (an adventure club for those who Graham Chapman will long be remembered for his role in the legendary British surrealistic comedy troupe Monty Python. He has been immortalized in the lead roles of Python movies Life of Brian and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Even decades after his passing in 1989 he is remembered by legions of fans, and his work is quoted as part of daily life. Right Recordings offers us a live recording of a performance that occurred on April 15, 1988 at Brown University in Rhode Island, USA. More storytelling than stand-up comedy, the result is over an hour of laughs. Chapman opens his set by asking the audience to give him 30 seconds of abuse. As he encourages them to cast vitriol at the stage, counting the seconds, the roar of the crowd nearly drowns out his words of motivation. Finally, after thanking the attendees, he remarks that this will save time later. Graham then settles in to telling stories about his famous friends (how Keith Moon stole him a bottle of gin, and teaching John Cleese to ride a bicycle) and his participation in the Dangerous Sports Club (an adventure club for those who enjoy activities that could end in their injury). The second half of this performance is a question and answer session, where the audience poses questions, primarily related to Monty Python, such as why were coconuts used instead of horses in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (budgetary reasons) and how Chapman dealt with his full frontal nudity scene in Life of Brian. https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Danger-Is-Everywhere-Audiobook/B00M9GGBU6 Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. I listened to this book with my nephew and niece who are 11 and 10 respectively and we all enjoyed learning how to keep ourselves save in such a dangerous world. It made our journey time whizz by and by the end we were delighted to pass out exam to become FODs (Level 1). The performance is engaging and I appreciated the effort that had gone into adapting the book into an audiobook with music and sound effects. It really was very amusing. I would say that my nephlets were the perfect age, however. Their cousins, aged 7 and 9 had less patience with the acronyms and the lack of fighting. Otherwise, I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys chuckling. Danger is everywhere I mean yolo so listen I'm sad that it's briged but over than that awesome:) AAAA DANGER Thair is a toothbrush in front of the sink because DANGER IS EVRYWHERE aaaaaaaa A bit dangerous, but safer if you're lying down My kids all have their DOD and listen to this over and over.. They love it! Here's hoping for sequels Not Good If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more? I managed 10 minutes of this so called hilarious book.. It left me cold. This guy obviously enjoys the sound of his own voice, but I didn't. It was monotonous . Sorry not for me. Would you ever listen to anything by David O'Doherty again? Probably not What didnt you like about David O'Dohertys performance? Monotonous and boring What character would you cut from Danger Is Everywhere? There are 5 missing... Great stuff Loved the series. it's just a shame that it ended as it would have been brilliant if they could have had a few more series. " (Publisher's Weekly) Members Reviews: Don't Buy This "Complete' Trilogy, Missing Part 1 Any additional comments? Buy this set in the three individual parts rather than this "complete" set (which starts with the SECOND part, not the FIRST). They may all be there (not sure) but they're out of order if they are. So amateurish! The Norman Conquests - laugh a minute I really enjoyed listening to these. I really liked the way the full story unrolled the longer I listened. I kept thinking "Oh I know where this is going" but was constantly surprised by the twists and turns as the plot was revealed. The scene is set in one of my favourite locations - a very English houseparty with very English characters. A most enjoyable listen. Keeps you laughing What was one of the most memorable moments of The Norman Conquests? Love the way it is 3 plays in one and you get to see all sides of the story very funny https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Saturday-Live-Volume-2-Audiobook/B0055PO2BI Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Members Reviews: Great show - beware duplicate material 3/4 of the material in this volume is available in volume 2 and 3, including the 1 hour 25th anniversary show. Terrific show, but just beware that if you have the first three volumes this one will be mostly duplicate material. the wrong discs Just as a warning to fellow purchasers really - the original of this volume would be great but this is exactly the same as Volume 2. There must be a technical error somewhere. Audible did kindly refund me for this but I don't think they've fixed the problem yet. So, don't buy this if you already have volume 2... I did love volumes 1 2 3 and 5! Misrepresented Three quarters of this volume is repeated from previous volumes. Not worth it if you already have 1 - 3. https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Table-Manners-Audiobook/B005IZZYDK Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. In Table Manners, the action occurs in the dining room of Mothers house, where a conventional middle-class family is attempting to have a pleasant country weekend. Editorial Reviews: If Oscar Wilde had gone on to write in the 1970s, his dialogue might have sounded a lot like Sir Alan Ayckbourn's, with a similar focus on sexual mores and social satire as a way to take a peek into the human heart. In this truly fine ensemble performance the action begins in a dining room with three couples during a family retreat. The incomparable Martin Jarvis (who has an MBE to his name) plays Norman, the husband of one sister and a potential seducer of her sister and of her sister-in-law. With wit and a finely honed sense of vulnerability, the equally incomparable Rosalind Ayres (who is married to Jarvis in real life) plays Sarah, the focus of so much of Norman's attention. biacuaduc@gmail.com (Alan Ayckbourn) Thu, 25 Aug 2011 15:42:10 GMT https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Table-Manners-Audiobook/B005IZZYDK thebookvoice.com 01:23:00 no Listen to full audiobooks for free on thebookvoice.com Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Rosalind Ayres as Sarah, Kenneth Danziger as Reg, Martin Jarvis as Norman, Jane Leeves as Annie, Christopher Neame as Tom, and Carolyn Seymour as Ruth. Members Reviews: Outstanding cast, highly mediocre play. Definitely won't be listening to the rest of the series. Nothing other than the headline. Boring play. Stellar cast. Definitely won't be listening to the rest of the series. If you are a fan of Fry, Fortune and Bird this is an almost unique opportunity to hear three of them at the very start of their careers and Peter Cook, already past his best, is still very funny. https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/An-Audience-with-Barry-Cryer-Audiobook/B0036I5AFI Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Members Reviews: Fantastic ~ laughs from the start... After finding I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue on R4 a few years back, I began to learn just how clever and funny Barry is, this audiobook doesn't fail to make me laugh every time I hear it. Be prepared to laugh aloud...... Barry Cryer is surely one of our comedy treasures, his wit and ability to create humor from every conceivable angle of our lives is legend. His recollection of past comedic events in his life is truly brilliant, as too are the other comics he has worked with or written for. He is surely head of the table at my comics dinner party. Thank you audible for the laughs! Barry Cryer is a living legend..... What made the experience of listening to An Audience with Barry Cryer the most enjoyable? Barry Cryer tells stories, jokes, anecdotes all at the pace of a great dad, or uncle. You can never hear them enough times. He has literally worked with everyone and never gets bog down in older comics, but embraces the new. Who was your favorite character and why? Barry Cryer, because.....(fill in about a thousand words here) Which character as performed by Barry Cryer was your favourite? The Great Remondo, or Reg as we knew him. If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be? yes, but not going to happen Any additional comments? A pace set that makes you laugh out loud and your able to retell to family, great stuff. Good old fashion in some cases comedy. https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Barking-Mad-British-Traditions-Customs-and-Sports-Volume-II-Audiobook/B0160BBPI8 Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Olympics Schmolympics! Why pay big bucks for a seat at the quadrennial world spectacle when you can travel to Merry Old and bear witness to any number of world championships that only a somewhat deranged citizenry - hence barking msd - could have conceived. Gripping competitive sports that test the stamina (or not) of participants will have you cheering for your favourite snail to outpace 14 of its cousins over a 13 inch course! No really? Snail racing!!! But get this. Anyone can participate. Don't have a snail? No problem. You can hire a snail and who knows, you and your snail may be feted at the local pub for a job well done. Curiously many of these competitive events start and end at a pub of which there are plenty in Britain ... the better to celebrate your win or drown your sorrows in. There are plenty more events besides the snail racing that you could participate in and all just as barking mad! Recommended reading for chuckles and the feeling you get that you are not reading, but actually listening to Gary as he narrates the many idiosyncrasies of his beloved Brits. I will buy the first book when I have a chance For a long time, I have always thought that a British is an exemplary for everything. But, this book gave me some very critical points and helped me expand my mind. It's an interesting book. But it had some grammar errors and needed to be fixed. Therefore, my 5-star review is for its critical information. I will buy the first book when I have a chance. You don't have to be a sportsfan to enjoy this book You don't have to be a sportsfan to enjoy this book. Just a fan of the quirky and unusual. Quick enjoyable read. How the British cope with being British It's not easy being British. You're stuck on a pokey little island with WAY too many people and an intrusive government and lousy weather and the ever-present danger of being run over by Princess Anne, who thinks she owns the road. Still, the Brits are a plucky lot and accustomed to hardship. https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Funny-Girl-A-Novel-by-Nick-Hornby-A-15-minute-Summary-Analysis-Audiobook/B00VEY01IC Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Members Reviews: Don't bother!! As an AP English Lit teacher, I try to find inexpensive editions of novels and plays that my students can purchase. This edition is horrible! There are too many lines that are attributed to the wrong character and too many typos. Stay away from this edition. The play is too good to be butchered in this manner. . It was OK. Probably a good read for high school and above. Boring in many parts so it was hard for me to keep reading . https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Hamsterdamned-Audiobook/B00SJOIHGI Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. It's Mike's stag-do - one final weekend of debauchery before marrying - and along with four of his friends, he intends to paint the town red. Unfortunately, they're not the only ones eager to paint the town red; six evil hamsters escape the delivery-truck and stumble upon a contaminated batch of space-cake. With the euphoria they experience comes a side-effect none of them could have anticipated: The hamsters start to grow. Hamsterdamned! is the action-packed and comical tale of gigantic rodents and sex-midgets, of one-legged prostitutes and inept Dutch policemen, of camaraderie and one man's fight to stay alive so he can marry the woman of his dreams. biacuaduc@gmail.com (Adam Millard) Thu, 22 Jan 2015 21:15:40 GMT https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Hamsterdamned-Audiobook/B00SJOIHGI thebookvoice.com 02:01:00 no Listen to full audiobooks for free on thebookvoice.com Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Members Reviews: Does What Other Stories Like it Can't. If you could sum up Hamsterdamned! in three words, what would they be? Obscene, lovable and-believe it or not-plausible. This book's characters were airheaded, for sure, but it was in the way that allowed the audience to care for, as well as feel sorry for, the buffoons (Sort of like Hunter S. Thompson meets Judd Apatow.). The lascivious humor and gore were vulgar, but the text never managed to dip into the "Too Much" area, a place where many similar stories go. Finally, this book provided the listener with the ability to accept the impossible situations. Usually this type of narrative is done so outrageously that the suspension of disbelief becomes a chore and something the reader or listener is no longer willing to do. This book, however, found the right balance between over-the-top and under-the-exaggeration-line. What was one of the most memorable moments of Hamsterdamned!? The one line that cracked me up was the narrator's description of Stuart's pick-up line. "As a joke, it was SHIT." This line contained nearly flawless delivery as well as an condemnation of the monstrosity that is pun-based philandering. What does Sketch MacQuinor bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book? As enjoyable as every character voice was, what stood out the most in terms of the voice acting was McQuinor's soothing tones that enchanted the listener like a irreverent, male, British siren song. What struck this listener in particular was how he was able to provide a subtle commentary on the story. You could hear the narrator trying to be as objective as possible, but there were times when his timbre suggested that he found the characters jus as ridiculous as we did. This provided a layer of subtext to the storytelling and let the listeners know that we weren't alone in realizing what a farce we were witnessing. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? I won't ruin the ending for anyone, but I will say that I wasn't expecting it to be as heartfelt as it was. Any additional comments? I am dying to see Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright make this into a film. Nasty, mutant hamsters rampage through Amsterdam! If you could sum up Hamsterdamned! in three words, what would they be? Hilarious, gory, worthwhile. Who was your favorite character and why? Mike was my favorite character because he was forced into the role of hero. He had no choice but to try to survive and beat the hamsters who had ruined lives, Amsterdam, and the bachelor party that he didn't want to have. https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Ruthless-Rhymes-for-Heartless-Homes-Audiobook/B01M26UYUR Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Public Domain (P)2016 Alan Weyman Members Reviews: Dark, dated but delicious humor There are some real gems here, but there are a lot of clunkers too. The author was good, but his writing was inconsistent and either hits the mark perfectly (such as with many of his "Little Willie" poems) or flops painfully in others. I'd still recommend this title since the price is more than reasonable and it has some wonderful little dark ditties that still make me chuckle from time to time. Not that this last remark is all that important, but the material is a little dated. Most people might not understand the punchlines since they were written almost a century ago in the colloquial English of that time. The one that springs to mind right away is a Little Willie poem that uses the words quicksilver and mercury interchangeably for the punchline. I have yet to have mentioned the word "quicksilver" to anyone under 60+ years old who knew what it actually was. If you know what it is right away, you'll really get a good chuckle. An Artefact Almost a precursor to stand up comedy but old and now the jokes are somewhat stale. Maybe interesting for someone curious about English sensibilities at the time. Wow Hardcore baby. They definitely had some built emotions they where trying to release during the writings in here, lol. It was a fun crowd shocking pleaser though. Entertaining Entertains, lewd, crude, at times downright rude - truth defined with an edgy twist - our warped perceptions and reflections with humor cleansed - Surprising humor. Really funny if you have a slightly dark sense of humor. https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/pd/Comedy/Barking-Mad-British-Traditions-Customs-and-Sports-Volume-III-Audiobook/B01B23EFNG Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/518/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free.
