Good price and timely shipping. La Bete I saw the play in Sarasota and later got the CD. The play is written in couplets; that's what makes it a real treat. You need to have seen the play to get full benefit of the CD. On-stage and on CD, La Bete is great. Wonderful. David Hirson, La Bete (Dramatists Play Service, 1992) Iambic pentameter in the late eighties on the stage? Yes! And well-done iambic pentameter, at that. La Bete is something special. I'm not sure if the stage had ever seen anything like it before. When you open with a twenty-page monologue, you're most likely breaking new ground. It's France, 1654. Prince Conti, disappointed at the lack of initiative shown by the players he keeps on retainer, has found a street performer named Valere that he wants to introduce to the company, and has arranged an introductory dinner. The action begins just after the sinner, when Valere, Elomire (the head of the company), and Bejart (Elomire's right hand man) have decamped to another room. Valere seems to hold Elomire in great regard; the feeling is not in the least mutual. After some well-spiced wordplay, Valere launches into his infamous, and quite humorous, monologue, during which Elomire comes up with an idea to make Valere look like the moron he is in front of the prince-- with thoroughly unexpected results. It's probable that those who have never read an entire play in verse will shy away from this. Don't-- as with all formal poetry worth the name, Hirson writes in such a way that, while you're aware of the rhythm and rhyme, the usual cadences one finds in speech are to the fore most of the time. (When they're not, it's carefully calculated for some effect or other-- in most cases, ludicrous humor.) There is great amusement to be found here, as well as some rather scathing subtext; it's fun stuff that will likely make you feel a bit uncomfortable in places, as well it should. Read it; it's worth your time. *** Â Lampooning Moliere, with a slice of modern-day editorial While I would urge everyone to buy a copy of this script, I would especially recommend it to students of theater history (for a good laugh) and to working or studying actors and directors - its classic/modern qualities make it a wonderful bridge to performing and directing classic works, and actors will find PLENTY of first-rate scene and monologue material. And to be sure, while its humor and satirical nature is its immediate draw, the deeper philosophical question which it (and, of course, "The Wrong Mountain") leaves us with is one which can prove debate-sparking, ideal-shifting, and life-changing.

Please note: This is the original, shorter version of the play. Members Reviews: Great value on a rare recording Don't be fooled: this recording is not complete, however much it may be unabridged from an earlier recording. Amongst other things, everything dealing with Cornelius and Valdes is cut, as is the Horse-courser episode. Oddly, Faustus's long and, to a modern audience, incomprehensible Latin incantation, is retained. As a result of the cuts, Faustus is neither shown needing help to master magic, nor wasting his powers on stupid tricks. In fairness to Audible, this recording seems merely to follow the cuts made in the original recording, for cassette tape, I believe. Moreover, the text of Marlowe's Doctor Faustus is famously complex. This particular version seems to follow the B-text, but cuts all of the comic episodes unique to it. The source is evident in a distinct background hum, though the actors are very precise, in the manner of an older generation of classical actors, so their voices remain easy to understand. I particularly appreciated Mephistopheles's irony. Faustus's misplaced confidence and mounting desperation recalls Richard Burton's film version. On the other hand, I think a lot is lost by reducing the parade of deadly sins to an audio format, especially when Faustus clearly says that he wants to see them, and the interruption of the Pope's dinner is also hard to follow in an audio format. Nevertheless, I'm grateful to Audible for making this recording available, and hope they track down more Elizabethan and Jacobean drama other than Shakespeare. The price is extraordinary, and the recording is a very good value. I guess a bit of Marlowe is better than none Judging from the surface noise it sounds like this recording was taken from an old LP from the 1950s. The heavy abridgement is probably due to the time-constraints of a vinyl disc. The style of acting and the in-studio sound effects will almost certainly strike modern listeners as somewhat old-fashioned, but this remains a wonderful play, even if what is presented here is only a fragment of the complete text. More like "Heavily Abridged" It's a stunning play, it truly is - and this is a great performance of it. But when a recording says 'unabridged', I'd love if that were true.

Period novel that still resounds for the modern reader Was engrossed by the film, thus bought the book. Explores life from each character's angle and point of view.. Insightful on the child's experience in a broken marriage. Stella is a histrionic type, shallow, attention seeking, but the author makes her likeable despite her failings. Why aren't people nice to my mother? It might have been impossible for any book to live up to the Barbara Stanwyck movie version for me, just because I saw and loved it first. But this book disappointed me more than I anticipated. It is still a moving story of motherly love and sacrifice, and it does provide more depth and detail than the movie. Butâand there again, maybe because I saw the movie firstâit didnât move me as much as I expected. I almost wondered if it isnât an abbreviated version of the original novel. The Femmes Fatales edition of another Olive Higgins Prouty title mentions that it is an abridgement of the original, so this one might be also. Unusual for this press, the book doesnât have an Afterword that might provide such information. At its heart, this book is about snobbery. Yes, Stella does some things that might lead people to believe she is âno better than she should beâ to use the old-fashioned phrase. But itâs hard to reach any conclusion other than that she and Laurel are ostracized because Stella wears the wrong clothes and behaves in the wrong fashion according to the society she most wants to cultivate. Sheâs from the wrong side of the tracks, marries up, and finds herself alone when her common ways drive that husband away. Once on her own, she reverts to vulgar form and no "decent" people will have anything to do with her or her daughter. Itâs not a very attractive picture. Contrasted with that, is Helen Morrison, the woman from the right side of the tracks who makes everyone feel at home, who never wears paint or powder or costume jewelry, and who knows instinctively how to behave in any situation. Mrs. Morrison is a very appealing character, no doubt, but her refined perfection, contrasted with Stellaâs vulgarity, jarred. And the book didnât always make sense to me.

It's a nice trip into a fantasy land where nothing too deep or evil is happening. I think there's a little bit of meaning in some of the things. Such as a man without a heart not realizing he has all the qualities of a person with one, and so on. Overall it's just one of those quick, easy, breeze through reads that I might not enjoy so much if I just read it as an adult. But because it's part of my childhood I can overlook the lacking parts and just go for the ride. A classic of American Literature Obviously there is more material in the book than the movie, including more detailed back stories for the Tin Woodsman and the flying monkeys. Some readers may find some material redundant (for example, there are many scenes at Emerald City). However, this is a lively read, and anyone who is interested in American Literature and/or exploring more of Oz, should enjoy this book. The Book is always better The book is always better than the movie. I enjoyed comparing and contrasting the two versions of this story. The written story was very different than the movie but both adventures bring you back to "there's no place like home." Great Book Great read. I loved it. It's quite the adventurous book. There is so much going on, so many different characters you meet, and so many different creatures in the book that you rarely get bored. I was rather intrigued from start to finish. There were a lot of times when I would find myself getting lost in the book, and picturing myself in that situation. The book is truly magical and wondrous and really enjoyable. Excellent book and an excellent read Excellent book and an excellent read. It is no wonder it has endeared the hearts of millions of children from one generation to the other.

As with many of those early radio broadcasts, it is as much audible-theater as it is the reading of a novel. As such, this really was a performance that was ell engineered and directed. Be advised, however, that this novel doesn't cover all aspects of the movie. It only touches on the relationships the crew developed with the islanders, and doesn't follow the ship once Bligh is deposed. Of course, the performance by Wells is first-rate, as he is perhaps the first master of the audio format. Get this book for your morning commute. It's short enough to finish in one sitting and will certainly show you the power of audio performances as they were in the past.

I was able to download and listen to the program in its entirety, and was not disappointed. The performances of both actresses were excellent, but I was simply rapt, enraged, and challenged by the acting of L. Scott Caldwell, who plays the dictator's mother.The subject matter is extremely heavy, but the pace is quick enough so it doesn't weigh down the drama. What did you like best about this story? The tension between the two women, watching their mutual resentment turn to something bordering on a type of affection, was extremely well crafted. Which character as performed by Caroline Goodall and L. Scott Caldwell was your favorite? Cora, the dictator's mother. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? When the dictator's mother describes what she did (can't say what it is), it was amazing. It's like I was there.

I absolutely love Jennifer Lauck! My only complaint and the only negative part of my review of Still Waters is that this brings us to the end of Jennifer's story (unless she writes another sequel 30 years from now to show how the rest of her life turns out!). I hope Jennifer continues writing and will perhaps try her hand at fiction. One of the things I most loved about both Blackbird and Still Waters is how they read like a novel. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough yet I was so disappointed when I was done knowing that this completed her story bringing us up to current times. You will find yourself almost disbelieving some of the things that have happened to Jennifer believing that no one could suffer such heartache and still end up as sane and normal as Jennifer is. I have seen Jennifer on Oprah (last year when Blackbird was released) and The Rosie O'Donnell show (this year with Still Waters) and she is a beautiful, intelligent, happily married mother of two (yes, she is expecting - CONGRATULATIONS!) I was able to draw strength and courage from Jennifer's words - If she could survive the horrific things that happened to her and still turn out as wonderful as she has, there's hope for us all!!! Readers of true life stories, biographies, family related issues, and fiction will all find something to lover about Still Waters. It is Jennifer's memoirs yet filled with life lessons and as I said earlier, it reads like a novel. I hope Jennifer continues to write and I will be watching for future releases from this talented, beautiful, inspiring writer. I can't stop thinking about it. All I can say is, Wow. I picked up Lauck's first book, "Blackbird" at the library and loved it. So right after I finished it I bought Still Waters. I read it in about 2 days. A lot happens in her life. A lot happens in many of our lives. But the way Lauck sees things that go on in her life and in the world, are special.

It is a quick way however to fit in It's a Wonderful Life in under an hour. Whats not to like?? If you buy this, then you have no doubt seen the movie. This is an abbreviated (I think) version of the movie and its great. It should be mandatory to listen to or watch Its a Wonderful Life every Christmas, its that good! For the Christmas Feeling This is perfect to make you feel in the Christmas spirtis. This is just magical.

Any additional comments? The premise of the story is interesting and has the potential for intrigue. New information is revealed over the coarse of the play and changes the trajectory of the story in a clever way that catalyzes the drama. Despite this strength, I take major issue with the following. Art should not provide the answers to important questions. Art should ask the important questions. Art that attempts to give answers to important questions is not art but propaganda. Personal opinions of the writer stuffed into the mouths of his characters makes us uncomfortable and reluctant to fully submerge into the world of the story because of the feeling that the writer is trying to manipulate us. The moments when the writer characters get to stand on the soapbox and preach are so frequent that they lose their impact. Superior stories save the big speech for the climax of the story or at least at a pivotal beat. The mentioning of the political issues of the day makes the story dated and will limits its shelf life as the issues of our day will become irrelevant. The dialogue is not too bad. The acting is in the performance is over-the-top despite only occasionally being funny. The exemption is the actors playing Darius and Opal who both give a strong and emotional performance. If you are a political junkie, you might like but I can't recommend.

She once again meets Alec d'Urberville - and so begins a chain of events that culminates in tragedy for all. Members Reviews: Hanging Tess I have not read much Thomas Hardy since college. I remember his tendency to have things not really work out well but this story is over the top. I don't know what more tragedy could befall this family. I guess the only silver lining was that they brought it all on themselves so the rest of us dont need to feel that our clan is next. The trouble starts when Tess's loud, drunk, and poor tempered father has delusions of grandeur, thinking that a poor haggler is next in line to the kingdom. Then the mother gets in the act by sending Tess cross-country to meet the prospective relatives. Without much delay the poor country cousin is seduced (actually a mild choice of word) by the untouchable lord. The lord's mother is too old and blind to change the course of events and soon we have illegitimate children, shunned and estranged daughters, fathers drinking even more, and mothers not able to control anyone. After some time passes and Tess gets a new start, it all blows up again. Seems the husband did not like hearing new and bad news on the wedding night. Eventually Tess takes matters in her own hands and ends up with a noose for her efforts. This is the Radio 4 dramatization of the Hardy classic. It is fast paced, easy to follow, and well acted. Clearly you lose something by not working your way through 300 pages but maybe not much. Try this on a long drive and you will be well rewarded.

What I liked best about this story was the movement of the characters through it. As a narrative piece it's so lyrical and the crux of it being physical contact treated as such a euphoric thing when one is deprived of it, it really makes one think about how much we take it for granted. Would you listen to another book narrated by Evan Harris? Not especially. The audio quality was sub-par and the reading not particularly interesting. But when it hits, it hits well, and it does pick up over time. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Yes. It continued to build and build into a magnificent story that I would love to see performed on stage. Sign me up for tickets immediately!

A brilliantly written and performed work of England dealing with its war-time struggles. A master writer and satirist at work. All those years ago I was greatly privileged to see Alan Bennett and Sir John Geilgud (as the headmaster) in this creation of his in the West End at the tail-end of the ?swinging sixties? in 1969. This more recent audio recording does justice to the play, with one exception ? only strains of the classic ?The dogs they had a party? can be heard, as the victorious rugby team return. A full rendition was called for! This is a great listen, but be warned ? there is no slapstick stuff here. The humour ranges from the subtle, the laconic, to the lavatorial.

I love the presentation and size of the book. It's easy to take along and read the script on the fly. It's not "standard" screenplay size, but the format of the script is so archaic to today's standard screenplay specs that it's not something you'd use as a guideline if your an aspiring writer. It's an amazing historical recreation of how Wilder and his co-author put the film down on paper. I'm not sure what draft this is but it's definitely a worthy read for anyone who wants to see how the masters do it. Highly recommended. My Favorite Movie Screenplay âïâïâïâïâï Best Screenplay of a Movie Ever Beautiful Screen Play for a Beautiful Film It's a pleasure to read Wilder's screenplay for "Sunset Boulevard." Rarely are the director and the writer the same person. In this case we get to see what Wilder wanted depicted in an almost poetic writing style. When coupled with the beautiful final product it is truly a treat to watch Billy Wilder's timeless classic "Sunset Boulevard" Nice to see the process plan before viewing the finished product I used it in theater class for the students to read each scene before viewing the film. It was interesting to see the differences and the shots that were spot on in the screenplay. I think it is one of the best pieces of literature ever. I think the way Billie Wilder expresses the life of a washed up actress and the life of a starving screnwriter is a wonderful interpratations of life ever. i loved the musical although I found it far fetched from the book.

The disgusting older preacher could be a meaty role for a major actor in a live production --- but the text is too slight to bear the weight with just words. The other two characters have still less interest, and none has any depth. Combined with the non plot, this is not something to get excited about. Still, I'm glad I bought the audio. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than two theater tickets. If the point is that marketing religion isn't the ideal, most moral and loving way to spread Christianity. . .well, wow! Thought everyone knew that from the time of Jesus, right?

I found the central characters to be completely unlikable. The story revolves around his being on trial for the murder of his wife, and this theme in the hands of a writer such as Oates had the potential for suspense and anticipation. I had very much looked forward to reading it after reading a synopsis. But Glynnis was such an unsympathetic character, I couldn't find myself caring that she was dead, and Ian and Bianca annoyed me so much with their weak and whiny personalities that I couldn't rustle up any sympathy for them or concern about their future. Too bad, because this story had so much potential. ) I have read some of the other reviews which seem to indicate that it is not one of her best. Basically Okay, so sue me but this is the first book I have read by Joyce Carol Oates. (Put me in the corner.) Basically, because I have read some synopses of a few of her works, I did not feel that the subject matters of many of her works were not of great interest to me. I tend to shy away from "gritty" novels and I am not a "mystery" fan. It appears that I made a mistake in judging based on snippets (which, actually, is not my usual modus operandi). What can I say? I found the characters finely drawn and, although I did not like them - I found the circuitous narrative compelling. Perhaps I would have left this book unfinished had it not been for the masterful writing of this author. Guess what? I have a few more of her books on my current reading llist. Addictive reading I love Joyce Carol Oates and find her books wonderfully written and compelling. This book has so many aspects to it, the story of what seems to be a successful marriage, friendships, compulsion, courtroom drama and finally, love. I couldn't bear to put it down. Fortunately, we had a snow storm that demanded I be inside and I was able to binge read it. Typical JCO JCO is talented. That is not debatable. This is a well-written novel. Also not debatable. I had to give it four stars, but the truth is that it dragged at times, and sometimes I find her studies of the American family to be a bit dark. Reads like an indie movie Ian Is indicted and tried for the murder of his wife. Oates then gives us an in depth interior monologue as he comes to grips with the changes in his status, his family, his social circle, his own mindset, as he tries to survive his situation.

Members Reviews: BitterSweet âAll Pretty Rosesâ is a novel primarily for 9-12th graders, and for coming of age readers. Therefore, this is my first time reading such a genre "coming of age" for the millennials. However, in my opinion, there is a scene or wording that I am not quite sure is appropriate for this age group, but ultimately it is up to the readersâ digression and authorâs choice to place it in the novel. Since I am not familiar with this genre and its style of writing, I had a difficult time completing this read. There were some areas I felt could have been elaborated on such as the ârapeâ since I was asking who, why, when, how, and what question(s) while reading the literature, then towards the end was mentioned again that re-triggered who actually violated Mercedes; also I did not fully connect as a reader to the love-experience between the couples. Poetry was added to the novel, as a form of expression between Mercedes and Bitter. There was one poem that was simple, direct, and to-the-point about relationships that I greatly enjoyed on page 85/86 (eBook version). In my own train of thought, I wondered if the names: Love, Betrayal, and Bitter were all emotions or such emotions playing in Mercedesâ psyche when it came to relationships.

It sounds like a recording of a play which is great and something I usually like however whoever recorded this must have done it on their phone from the back of the theatre. Classic play Short fun play with witty dialogue. However I found the voice of actors grating and rather old for the parts of young teenagers and mid 20 somethings.

Members Reviews: Purgatory is a fresh take on a murder mystery I really enjoyed all aspects of this story from the well written story itself with fresh curves and surprises where one might predict the typical. I found myself visualizing the story as I would watch a film. Purgatory maintained my attention and focus throughout leaving me wanting more. This trilogy definitely has the makings of a best seller! Escape reality into a greater reality! Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? Yes, I would recommend this to a friend. It is a wonderful literary and auditory experience. Who was your favorite character and why? My favorite character was Dave. Even though he is a serial killer he still has so much humanity. It forced me to think of other people and society being fragmented in the same way. Which scene was your favorite? My favorite scenes were the Dave and Father Abramo segments. They were both disturbing and heartbreaking. And, ultimately, extremely illuminating. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? I wasnt expecting to. However, after I began listening I couldnt pull myself away until it was finished. Any additional comments? As someone with a background in religion and who has followed church corruption for many years, I was very curious and partially skeptical before I listened to this book. To say that I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. What J. Costa has created with this book is nothing short of monumental. As the listener I felt that I was living a segment of Dave, and Judas violent and darkly humorous life in the present, while simultaneously reliving Daves lovely AND dark past with Mya and Abramo. Costa has been incredibly artful with his writing, narration and acting abilities bringing to life a cast of characters experiencing their world with realism that I have yet to see and/or hear elsewhere. Get Ready To Change The Way You Think Would you listen to Purgatory again? Why? I would and have listened to Purgatory several times.This is a very psychologically provocative work.

Disclosure: Mark Leyner and I created the story in 2001. We recorded it on the phone line, just as a real wiretap would be. We'd write out the rough plot line, talk the actors through it briefly, including what was then happening in the real world, then the actors improvised all the dialogue. We wanted these fictional characters to react to not only the fictional storyline but to include commentary on what was actually happening in the world at that time. Packer could serve a much wider cause of justice by using his journalistic skills to expose the cynical lies behind this Zionist false flag attack. But like 99.9% of America's journalistic brotherhood, Packer prefers to let sleeping dogs lie. In the end Packer himself betrays the trust of his readers. Nevertheless, I have given this a 5 star rating since it effectively portrays the cynicism with which the US occupation forces in Iraq used Iraquis. It at least opens up a window to the world of corruption that characterizes US foreign policy.

I was fortunate to see it when it played on Off Broadway and the reading on this CD were every bit as good as the performance. While this story has fictional characters the science behind the story is cutting edge medical research. This is a topic that effects all levels of sports where head injuries are possible but especially football, The culumative affects of head trauma begin in childhood with Pop Warner Leagues and continue through high school, college, and professional level leagues. Because of publicity such as this CD America is waking up to the seriousness playing a game with that we all love.

The History of Tom Jones: a foundling by Henry Fielding (Novel-Audible/E Book-Fiction) 5* I read along with the Audible of the novel which I found a highly delightful and entertaining experience. The narrator, Bill Homewood, who performed the audio version of the work was excellent doing the various characters as well as the invisible narrator (author) of the story. The Synopsis is as follows: A foundling of mysterious parentage brought up by Mr. Allworthy on his country estate, Tom Jones is deeply in love with the seemingly unattainable Sophia Western, the beautiful daughter of the neighboring squireâthough he sometimes succumbs to the charms of the local girls. When Tom is banished to make his own fortune and Sophia follows him to London to escape an arranged marriage, the adventure begins. A vivid Hogarthian panorama of eighteenth-century life, spiced with danger and intrigue, bawdy exuberance and good-natured authorial interjections, Tom Jones is one of the greatest and most ambitious comic novels in English literature. It is rather brilliant, and there is no lack of shenanigans as we follow Jones through his history and the reader never knows when and where the author will abruptly go off on a tangent, told in a most eloquent manner, end with a flourish and no doubt tossed his quill down and took a bow. I am either taken in by some farce or thoroughly enchanted by this author. As Fielding is rather the loquacious writer this read comes in Audible time at almost 38 hours or roughly 1,000 pages but worth every minute spent on it. The book itself is five stars! This is a review of the Oxford Classic Kindle edition. The book itself is one of the greatest novels ever written; this is maybe the third time I've read it. Fielding is a master of irony, by which I mean genuine irony, not the mean sarcasm that often passes for irony these days. Fielding is never mean-spirited. His irony is generous and his humor is benevolent. His characters are three-dimensional, never all good or all bad. Before reading this, I had been re-reading several Dickens novels, and the contrast is enormous. A Dickens villain is a villain to the core, and his heroes (and especially his heroines) are saints. Tom instead is a young man with many faults, but a great heart. Sophia, his beloved, is a genuinely good person, but she's got a certain fiery spirit, and has her moments of doubt and remorse. I advise you to read every word of this novel. It's divided into books, and the first chapter of each book is an address to the reader, expounding Fielding's theories on literature and on human nature. An impatient reader might be tempted to skip these, but that would mean missing a lot of worthwhile and enjoyable reading. I have some quibbles with the Kindle edition. There were some mistakes in the passage from print to pixels, but they were not excessive.

Containing wry stories about William Randolph Hearst, Columbia Pictures' Harry Cohn, and Rita Hayworth, Michael B. Druxman's Orson Welles is the "boy genius" at his best. By the end of the 'book or play or whatever' I think I know more about the man and understand a little more of the why...(perhaps Welles needed to develop his post-production skills or just not take vacations.)

Take A Ride Through Marcy's World Maybe because I recognized the landscape. Maybe because I have certain afflictions, not the same as Marcy's but mine have a similiar effect on my life. Or maybe just because it is a fast moving, darkly humorous, story. Whatever . . . I totally enjoyed Yellow & Green: Not an Autobiography of Marcy Chen. We are inside Marcy's head as she moves from being isolated from most of life to being faced with hard to predict options in both her personal and professional lives. Doors open and a frighten Marcy has to summon the courage to enter or slink back, disappointing family and friends. There isn't much sugar coating in the story telling. It's explicit and sensual. Emotional and analytical. The observations, the pressures, the expectations and thought processes are so real you have to remind yourself it's (mostly) fiction. Yes, she is more "normal" than she thinks. Don't be surprised if you form some attachments to a few of the characters in Marcy's life, including to our heroine herself. As I neared the end of the book I was thinking despite gender, racial and age differences she is almost like me and, I suspect, like you. Okay, I don't spent as much time thinking about what I am wearing . . . and . . . I watched my tapes. Sequel Please I can't tell you how relieved I was to stumble on a memoir about a chinese american girl in her mid twenties who retreats to her home to shut out the world. Oh wait that's me. And Marcy Chen, more or less. I may just be a fast reader but I was so disappointed when I got to the last page of my kindle. She definitely has more stories to tell. Yes there were moments where it was overly descriptive (sex scenes) but it's typical for a first time novelist. Overall the story was lovely and brutally honest about having an overbearing chinese mother who makes you feel you're a constant failure in life. Thank you for writing this book and making me feel less crazy haha. Seattle's Newest Author comes in with a bang When I saw Marcy Chen's twitter about her new book, I bought it because she is a fellow twitter author, and that is just polite. I was captivated by it from the first Kindle page. The book is tightly written, filled with emotion, pulls you into her character - and is funny.

Three main characters, Amy, Stan, and Gwen, follow different paths with the same ache for love; yet this is really Amy's story. In her most particularly, we see our needs and wounds, our moments of blindness and of insight. With her we sympathize as we witness again love's ability to draw and repel, to afflict and to redeem. These conventional, though ever-fresh, themes are explored in a somewhat unconventional plot. We meet Amy (played here by Melissa Manchester) in Maine in 1955. She has never married and has given her life to caring for her brother, Stan (Stephen Bogardus), a man crippled by childhood polio. The familiar and settled ways of their lives are altered one summer after Amy impulsively decides to place a "Lady Seeks Gentleman" correspondence ad to which Stan alone--unaware--replies. This conflict and contest unfolds as the sister and brother rent a cottage they own near their home to Gwen (Megan Mullally), a woman finding herself on her own for the first time and uncertain about her place in the world. Ms. Manchester, Mr. Bogardus, and Ms. Mullally deliver strong, impassioned, and witty performances, supported here by the equally-impressive work of Megan Fay and Paul Anthony Stewart. The singing in this recording--which was produced by L.A. Theater Works and broadcast on NPR--is spectacular. For this project it is apparent that he increased his efforts in research significantly, going so far as to enumerate for himself (and for his readers) the significant elements of all of Shakespeare's comedies. (The table illustrating this has been a big hit among my friends at parties.) All of this research would be a laudable effort in itself; that Mr. Smith then composed such a winning play from the knowledge gained is a very happy result. I am not an expert on the Bard, but I very much enjoyed reading the script. It has a realistic aspect to it: when I read Shakespeare, I often find myself returning to a sequence or scene, over and over, trying to hear the iambic pentameter as it ought to be heard. I found myself doing that throughout To Each Their Own. I would like to see this play, when it is produced, if only to hear the words spoken as Mr. Smith would like us to hear them. I recommend this script to anyone who enjoys theater, in any of its many forms.

My review is not on the content of the play, but on this particular edition of the play. I know everyone has their own reading style, so this may not bother everyone. However, when I'm reading an older piece of literature, I enjoy looking at footnotes. I'm sure that some skip over them, but I do not. In this edition, however, the footnotes were there, but there were no indications in the text to let me know when to look at the footnotes. The only indication was the line number, which was written right before each footnote. This was irritating to me, and so I went through the whole play ahead of time and marked the parts where I had to look for footnotes, which was very time consuming. I would definitely recommend reading the play, because it is very funny and there are a number of interesting literary devices going on that I won't go into here, but I would not recommend this particular edition (New Mermaids).
