This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review. Good read Mercurial by Michael Brown was a good quick read. It is a collection of poetry by Michael Brown on many different topics. Eclectic Poetry The enjoyment of poetry is very subjective, but overall I found this collection of poetry/rants/lessons to be very heart-felt. Overall, it presented a gloomy, negative view of the world and how we humans connect -- or fail to connect -- with it. I found some very real truths in it, especially regarding the treatment of homosexuals. It is a worthwhile listen, although it won't bring you sunshine on a cloudy day. The narration is smooth and even. It is pretty flat and unemotional, but since the poet is narrating his own work, I presume the delivery reflects his mood and feelings. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. A Moving Collection of Poetry This was my first time listening to an audiobook of poetry, and I found it to be very moving. The poems are thoughtful and evocative and glide along at a fast clip. The poems cover a variety of interesting topics, while the ones dealing with mental health and sexuality had the most impact on me. No Invitation to the Funeral, about a gay Muslim who commits suicide, is especially affecting. Poet Michael Brown narrates the poems superbly, with clean, crisp pronunciation and exquisite phrasing. Overall, this is an excellent collection of poetry and left me wanting to read more from this author. *I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Mercurially Bohemian This whirlwind of tiny poems has little in common with each other except its Bohemian cynicism about the world. Poems of anger, blame, and sadness are occasionally punctuated by small rants. The result is an awareness which feels young and fresh like the rebellious indignation of twenty-somethings. But the content reminds us that behind their immature compulsion to confront and criticize the world, there is also substance. The narration is good but it could be better. Since it was narrated by the author, all of the intonation is as the writer intended which is useful with such short works. However, the tone is mostly flat with a few exceptions where he allows himself to emote.

After finding out that he had skin cancer, John checks himself into Lion's Cancer Lodge at Waikato Hospital in New Zealand. He journals his five weeks there. I enjoyed hearing about his journey and what he learned in his time there. An Humbling Journey Through Cancer John Irvine's sharing of his cancer survival story was eye-opening. What stood out to me was his acceptance of himself and others during this time. While he was staying at the Lion's Cancer Lodge he was with others and didn't have to go through it alone. The lodge provided a support system for him and the others. I liked where he spoke of another man whom was a bit grumpy and John showed him compassion because he knew what the man was going through. Roland Sickenberger's narration was great! He spoke very well and portayed John's story as if he were the author himself. What I enjoy about his narration is his voice inflections. He adds a lot of character and really brings audio to life. I would recommend this audiobook not only to cancer survivors but also caregivers, friends, and family. It's a quick listen but to me it spoke volumes. People do listen and there are lots of stories to be told. I hope to hear more from both this author and reader. He doesn't just talk the talk, but he walks the walk. Being in his office is a treasured practice in comfort and serenity. I am constantly amazed by the depth and precision of his knowledge. His books are well organized, with very manageable chapters that provide tremendous incentive to go at your own pace and the comfort in knowing that you will not be bogged down in a hugely long chapter. This spells burnout, and Dr Zaidi. At the end of one chapter in one of his books, he wrote, "Now put this book down and take a walk". He understands, truly. There is not an ounce of ego in this man, just his passion to serve humanity. In this book, You Are Not Who You Think You Are, Dr Zaidi uses poems to further address the factors of stress in our lives. Stress is a large factor in the contraction of type 2 diabetes. That was one of my big problems. I thought I was doing ok and taking care of myself. Added to bad eating habits and poor choices, the stress of my job and family put me into fairly serious type 2 diabetes. I encourage those that read this review to purchase this book. Read it with an open mind and with the knowledge that the author is writing it for you. If you knew him as I do, you would know this to be fact. He truly writes with the intention of speaking to everyone personally. To sum up this book, as all of them, Dr Zaidi does not teach, preach or scold. He enlightens. I am a lucky man.

All that is left is dust and blood and fear. Have you listened to any of Phillip J. Mathers other performances before? How does this one compare? This poem portrays war in all its ugliness while some of the other poems read by Phillip J. Mather focused on glory, patriotism, and liberty and urged men to fight harder. In this poem the only urge is to stay alive. For that you must kill. There is no glory in it. I found Mr. Mather's narration on some of his other poems to be slightly better than on this one. However, the deepness of his voice and the emotive way he narrates gave this poem an extra dimension beyond the written word. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? The imagery in this poem is magnificent. It is also very sad. The descriptions in the first stanza are chilling, especially when the poet describes the rotting dead with their green, lifeless legs. Any additional comments? A great poem to get an honest view of what war is really like in the battlefield.

They are simple poems with some occasional words to look up ( if you are a younger reader). Poems included are: Diver's call, Calypso's dirge, Moon tides, Sea Clams, Plankton, Trident, Lighthouse, Sea Gulls, Pisces, Sea spectrum, Sunset red, Lover's farewell, Pacific, Isle of Gold, Castaway, Palm Trees, Salt of the earth, Pot of gold, Sailor's prayer, Mermaid, Coral Reefs, and Safe harbor. I would recommend this book for light reading at the beach. Also, for people that want to get in the mood for an ocean excursion, such as scuba diving, fishing, and cruising, Mermaid Excellence This was a lovely book of petty that really grasps what sea life is all about. I quite enjoyed reading and learned many visuals about the sea that I never really thought about. love it I loved this book, I give it a 4 star only because I do base books off of the cover also and the cover is different from what is shown by the purchaser, and honestly I am not sure if its different because of kindle version or not, my husband was about to get this for me again because he didn't realize I already had it I loved it! I loved this book! I thought it was an actual book but it was a poetic book, and I just read it and it was just great! Her voice fit the book perfectly. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? Rain Spirit's Loss or Gain was the point that most deeply moved me while listening. Clay Bowl ranks number two in most moving moments. Any additional comments? Although the book is primarily poetry and composed of several different poems the whole tells the overall story of the miko's journey. Listening we hear how the miko is more than what we may at first think.

However, Now You Can See didnât work as well for me. When I read the synopsis for this poetry collection I expected something completely different from what I got. I expected a book about self-discovery, growth, an emotional and/or physical journey with a focus on the protagonist of the story and not a relationship. I thought as a 21-year-old I would learn something (or at least relate to) from the protagonist and the journey she supposedly went through during her twentieth year. That was not the case. "19. Obviously the End of the Line We feed off each otherâs insecurities We donât even like each other Have no reason to like each other Except for the fact that no one else Really cares about us anymore We have nobody but each other So letâs attach ourselves, never let go Thereâs no other security left" Now You Can See is about a complex relationship that has ended. At times, it seems sweet and at times I felt alarmed over how co-dependent the people in the relationship seemed to be and how I just wanted the protagonist to realize she deserved so much better. In that aspect, I definitely think the poetry collection comes back full circle and delivers a satisfying ending. If you have ever been through a brutal breakup, then Now You Can See will probably speak to you a lot. "Because all I feel for you now is pity Because you proved your lie of love You showed who you really were Iâm glad to know because it releases me From guilt when I move on To someone better than you" I felt that the writing shifted, some poems were definitely stronger and better written the others but all in all it worked and will satisfy readers looking for a quick read that will still make them think a little extra. I recommend Now You Can See to poetry readers looking for a collection that is about heartbreak and unsuccessful relationships. Itâs a quick read with simple language, and I can see a lot of people enjoying it. Beautiful As a lover of fiction, I tend to overlook poetry, but I loved Now You Can See. As a whole, it tells a poignant story of a young woman experiencing love, heartbreak, anger, confusion, and ultimately acceptance. A must-read for fans of deep, personal poetry.

What does Spencer Bryant bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book? I really enjoyed his reach, deep, male voice. It added emphases behind the already powerful words. Any additional comments? This book tackles some of the most pressing issues in the black community. Issues that may offend or hurt, but need to be addressed nonetheless. What I like about this book is that while it dares to "go there" it is handled with caution. It brings food for thought to the table. While this book doesn't necessarily provide answers, this book gives you something to chew on while you consider the message. I definitely think this book brings up topics that are worth discussing in a group setting. Even if you don't agree with the author, I definitely think it is worth examining where you stand on the issues and I think that is the point of this book.

Loved the way the different voices told their tales, the way Oswald shifted the work's form to suit the different voices, the different feel of various parts of the river. Beautiful. The Poetic Voice of a River I live within a few miles of the Dart, the river that gives its name to Dartmoor, Dartington and Dartmouth, yet to discover Alice Oswald's poetic celebration of this watercourse from source to estuary I had to read the transcript, published in The Hudson Review, of a radio talk by Andrew Motion. The poem won the 2002 T S Eliot Prize shortly after first publication, but otherwise seems to have got off to an unpretentious start in terms of publicity and sales. However, the new (2010) format appears to have got it moving rather better, which can only be a good thing. Besides those who have enjoyed other poems by Alice Oswald, the market for this book should include all literate visitors to Dartmoor and South Devon, those who enjoy the poetry of Ted Hughes (Hughes lived not many miles north and east of the source of the Dart), and the many schools that use Hughes to stimulate imaginative classroom work. This volume consists of a single poem of alternating verse and prose, and at one point a 25 line silence. Through the voices of a succession of people who live, work, or take recreation on, in or in proximity to the river - even drown in it - plus the voice of the river itself, we follow its 45 mile progress from moor to sea. Some of the less expected points of call are a small hotel, a woollen mill, a milk factory and a sewage works. All are memorable in their way, and we learn much from the voices encountered there, but the open moorland, the steeply descending section of the river inaccessible even to walkers, and the nominally faceless, but deep and timeless expanses of the river estuary ultimately predominate. Besides the river itself, a unifying factor from sea almost to source is provided by the annually migrating salmon, attracting legal and illegal fishing, and providing work for the fisheries warden, a figure who speaks well for himself, but is not well-regarded by the poachers Alice Oswald also coaxes into speaking frankly. Oswald's two years of fieldwork researching the river and interviewing subjects was clearly well spent, and the poem will in turn provide many diverting hours of research for those who wish to fully understand every line. If, on first encounter, you know what a Kevick is, you already know South Devon rather well. As a help to the uninitiated, it's a pupil or former pupil of the King Edward VI School (now Community College) in Totnes. Talcom (powder) and the Sillies (Isles off SW England) are presumably just mis-prints.

His delivery makes it well worth it the drafts near the end are hilarious. Will listen more than once! Very patchy I do quite like the odd tim key poem, but there is a lot of absolute tosh in amongst the good ones, so whilst they may be well performed it's quite dull in the main. Tim Key - the definition of 'off the wall'... ...And more like skipping down the street with a carving knife, singing sea shanties whilst eating a cream tea. In other words, listen to these weird and wonderful and always darkly amusing little poems and you'll see what I mean. God bless you, Mr Key.

This is a good book for any Soldier to have. War Poems John Hollander has selected one- hundred and fifteen poems of war to include in this Anthology. As he points out in his instructive introduction these poems express varied and contradictory attitudes and moods toward War and those who fight in it. There are poems which celebrate heroism and those which are angry at the whole enterprise. There is much description of the gore and sorrow of war and there is too much lament and elegy. Many of the poems will be recognizable to most readers, poems like 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic' or 'Concord Bridge' or 'Mademoiselle from Armentiers' The anthology contains poems which are among the greatest in world literature' from 'David's Lament for Jonathan' to Yeats poem on the Death of an Irish Airman' 'War' is the most horrifying frightening and intense of collective human experiences.

If, as publisher-critic Michael Schmidt has written, "we read [poetry] with our ears," I would rephrase this by saying that if we're lucky, we also hear it with our eyes. But I'm not lucky; unlike prose, I MUST HEAR poetry, and the nature of (especially) this particular poet's oeuvre is such that he demands to be heard in dramatically polished recordings such as this one by Wagland the new kid on the Browning block. (At Audible you can also compare veteran voice actors David Timson and Patience Tomlinson's superb collaboration, with James Mason's iconic portrayals of disturbed priests and uxoricidal husbands; you can purchase 3 to 15-minute readings by Cathy Dobson, or at the other extreme Frederick Davidson's 5-hour (!) monotone marathon.) Obviously narrators differ in vocal tone and timbre, as well as interpretive approach. For these reasons alone you and I may prefer different readers. On a theoretical continuum from straight-up reading to the over-wrought ACTING so preciously satirized by Jon Lovitz's SNL sketches, Greg Wagland lands in the golden middle: not quite understated; pensive but not subdued. That said, unlike say Davidson (who always sounds like Davidson), Wagland's tone varies as it should depending upon the poem, and his interpretations are always moving and dead on. Rupert Brooke's Poetry simply comes to 'life' when recited by Douglas Hodge. One can 'read' poetry but I find the best way to enjoy good poetry is having it recited in a manner that one is transported to a time and place when one can visualize the world of the Poet....in this instance the world of Rupert Brooke. At times 'words' so powerful ...Poetry so beautiful...left me breathless. Poetry stirs up emotions and takes one to a very special mythical place. I loved The narration by Mike Read ...who gave a thorough insight into the life and times of Rupert Brooke. It was fascinating to learn so much about this Poet who died so young and who was so full of confidence...a brilliant Poet so very talented. His death came so suddenly and unexpectedly. A special touch was a poem of Rupert's narrated by someone he once loved. I highly recommend this audible for lovers of good poetry. I continue to enjoy the benefits of Poetry well read.

Tomorrow, WE all need to be the leaders who bring back our American Democracy. I found this vision in Doris's poem, 'A Meeting in the Woods', the poem that urged me to keep fighting. It describes a chance meeting that Hillary Clinton had during a walk in the woods with a mother and daughter a few days after the 2016 election. This poem felt half the country's pain but in the final stanza offered hope. Do you agree with me that the mother, in the woods, showed us we have to work for our dreams? The final stanza reads: "My daughter is securely on my back, for now, Perhaps, she will be the one to lead us out of the woods and, once again, into our dreams." I'm a proud American and I will not sit silent. I will fight for the American Dream. Trying to capture a moment Two disclaimers right out the gate. 1st this book was gifted to me for my favorite price of free. Its freeness has no bearing on my review. 2nd I am not a connoisseur of poetry. I want to be, and have tried various works but haven't ever really been able to get into it. Ervin does an amazing job capturing the feeling of American'sgoing into the 2016 election. How many were still looking for work and someone to be their voice. Ervin writes of many of the things that were discussed during the election campaign. Draining of the swamp, who's swamp, the one in your back yard or mine. What if your swamp is murky and ugly and mine looks pretty, what if they drain the swamp and put up a parking lot? She discusses Fake News and its ramifications.

The author's introspection provides an eye-opening analysis of feelings many experience in life, in all types of relationships. I appreciated the vulnerability. What about Treavor Wagoner and Stacy Thomas s performance did you like? I loved that while the subjects presented in the book were vulnerable, the performances were bold and fearless. You feel the emotions of the words and appreciate the hope in the tone. An interesting blend I'm not usually and avid fan of poetry, but I found the experience of listening to Treavor read his own words insightful and soothing. It's easy to tell that he is determined and invested in this production, so I'm glad he was able to record it himself and capture it with his own authentic intention. At times, the words seem slightly dour and downtrodden, but they always seem to carry a more uplifting meaning behind them. I found the passage describing the courtship between Qadmus and Harmonia particularly moving. The audio book is excellent as well. A most epic poem told through the mythology of mankind Of Letters and a Man by Mark Will is an epic poem of the most epic sense. On the personal level, it is about questions of identity and all the contradictions and variations that can be contained inside one, about the internal vs. the external, and the amalgams of paradoxes within the whole. The other, and the self. It is about the compulsion to write, with declarations of an "Anti-Poet" and talk of an "absurd obsession to create." The never-ending search for self-identity... It is also very much a tale of humanity's mythology, organized initially by the Phoenician alphabet and full of references to all things Biblical, Egyptian, Nordic, medieval occultic, and so on. With almost an overload of religious symbolism, the author spares no expense at utilizing maximum literary power with each line. The narration in the audiobook by Guy Bethal is read with the proper intensity, perfect for this ultimate meditation on identity. To be all things, noble and awful, it is ambitious and perhaps cannot always reach the loftiest of heights that are striven for, but it's certainly read well with full confidence. All the way to the end, with the last line that sums up all these concepts as good as anyone could: "From A to Zed, I am the book I write." A Rich Literary Experience If you, like me, find yourself reading the same stories again and again, try âOf Letters and a Manâ. This mini opus is a must for anyone who write, has written or wants to write. Using a canto format, its layout and graphics allow the dense and layered meaning within the text to be both immediately accessible on one level while open to be appreciated on many more. True, I personally needed Google to understand many of the references, but this merely enriched the experience. It is clearly the rich work of a craftsman who understands his chosen medium and it is a fulfilling read. A Poetic Narrative "Of Letters and a Man" is a poetic story rich with references to the ancient Greek and medieval Italian epic poems. It delivers an amazing amount of details that show a lot of respect for the genre. As a canto, or a poem to be sung, I found myself wanting to sing the lines like a monk singing a Gregorian chant of this intro to a mythological tale.

Members Reviews: I'm garbage at reading poem books I have to say, I'm garbage at reading poem books. I was originally interested in this because I had read The Picture of Dorian Gray, and afterwards I had looked up Oscar Wilde. I had found that this verse: And alien tears will fill for him Pity's long-broken urn, For his mourners will be outcast men, And outcasts always mourn. is on his grave from the Ballad of Reading Gaol, and that's why I read it. Instead of being only about his imprisonment, I got a lot of fanciful poems that were a little superfluous. I thought the best poem in the book was the actual Ballad of Reading Gaol. It was vivid and accessible, unlike the heavy poems with all the mythology references. (I even like mythology!) Anyway, took me awhile to get through this, even though it's pretty short. Great writing, but I only liked it I am biased, I love Wilde-- he can be a touch over the op (:D), but he's never dull. This is a long poem... or series of poems etched~stitched~crocheted together (at least in my mind). Mostly 1st person, but other forms are used yet reverts back to author's eyes view. I like to try to put them together in a longer narrative, even if that isn't the way the author intended them... because that is just something I like to do. The Ballard of Reading Gaol There was no doubt that Mr. Wilde is a master of the poetic word. All of his poetry that was written before he went to gaol was full of flowers, Gods and Goddesses and idyllic meadows. I was quite breathless from all that tulip tripping but I'm glad I sloughed on through to "Reading". This is by far Oscars most worthy poem. He perfectly caught the helpless cadence of men trapped in their own crime and punishment. I felt this unhappy man's plight like it were my own. Yes, Oscar, we do kill the ones we love. You also killed yourself but in the process created your most worthy words. ?Rating a classic of literature? This is a classic. It is free. It was written by an acknowledged master. How very late-20th Century egocentrism to be asked to RATE something which has been a dip-and-taste book for decades. I'm a writer, I loved it. I don't give a damn about sexual proclivity, but you may turn up your nose because of the author, no matter the literary merit.

Having previously read and loved Ketchumâs "The Girl Next Door" and "Off Season", which are intense, graphic and bloody horror novels (a/k/a splatterpunk â my favorite go-to genre), I wasnât quite sure what to expect from this collection of poetry, but since it was only a couple bucks I figured I couldnât lose. I was not disappointed. The majority of the poems in this collection are extremely short â some only a sentence or two long â and cover a wide variety of everyday topics. The ones I was most drawn to, however, were the half dozen or so odes to cats. I am a true animal lover (I actually prefer the company of animals over most people) and I fully understand the happiness and joy that comes with having a pet. It is much more than just a pet â it becomes a treasured member of the family. I have also experienced too many times the extreme heartache and despair that comes with losing a pet. Jack Ketchum has included several short yet powerful dedications to the beloved cats he has had, and lost, over the years. In very few words, Ketchum beautifully yet heart-wrenchingly illustrates the love and affection that he felt for his cats, as well as the adoration and trust that his cats undoubtedly felt for him. Jack Ketchum readily admits that he is not a poet; he has no interest in following the fundamental rules of poetry composition or structure. He has simply jotted down this assortment of thoughts throughout his life as a cathartic release â like most people would keep a journal or diary. My favorite was "Testament" because of the emotions that were evoked from its words - I listened to it several times. Tiffany Williams did an excellent job narrating. She had great cadence and warmth. Her smooth voice was perfect for providing the perfect platform for each poem's imagery. I recommend Songlines to anyone who enjoys poetry, as well as those who want a short respite from reading/listening to novels. beautiful poems I thought that the poems were beautiful, some I liked more than others. My daughter's first poetry book isn't written and put together in such a way that every poem flowed and blended together. I understand that each poem was individually written but the way they were written and arranged is perfect. The poems were short but extremely beautiful. I felt each poem held a meaning to me, some more than others. I feel every single person that reads or listens to Songlines will be touched in some way. Every poem will reach someone, everyone will find at least one poem that will hold some meaning to them. You'll find yourself listening or reading them over and over again. These poems truly are a journey that will take you anywhere. I especially loved the poem her dad wrote for her as a wedding gift, well on her wedding day, I have to say that's a gift that she'll have forever. I also see your poetry Jen Minkman giving my daughter inspiration and inspiring her to change the way she writes poetry or puts it together. If it does, I'll make sure that she adds your name to one of her poetry books or a book that she writes. She also writes and she just turned 17 years old. I loved to see or read on how they came up with them. It was nice to see Abraham Lincoln was one of the many he inspired. I love poems so I had to read it and it was a nice changed. (The original writing) The Birks of Aberfeldy song he wrote sounded familiar. âBonie lassie, will ye go, Will ye go, will ye go, Bonie lassie, will ye go To the birks of Aberfeldyâ Wonder if it was on a black and white movie I watched or something else. Or I could be wrong and it sounds familiar to another I am thinking of. But still it was nice reading about Robert Burns life, poems, and songs back in 1759 to 1794. Got for an honest review. If that's something that grabs you by the throat and hurls you to the ground--well--that's lucky, and your life is richer for it. If it doesn't--alas! My Study of 'Mean Time' Let me begin by saying that Carol Ann Duffy is a poetic genius. She stands alone in the world of poetry with an extreme confidence to tackle taboo subjects such as sex and disease etc. which other poets wouldn't dare speak about. For example; in `Litany' Duffy speaks of subjects that others don't tend to speak of in standard, conventional poems. "where no one has cancer, or sex, or debts, and certainly not leukaemia , which no one could spell" Some people may assume that Duffy's work represents the pessimistic views of today's society, but in my opinion, the way you interpret the poets is a personal touch to the understanding of the poems. Duffy has an extreme talent for stimulating the imagination and creativity of her audiences. `Mean Time' reflects life experiences by Duffy herself which she interpreted and condensed into an anthology of profound poems. My personal favourite from `Mean Time' is `Welltread' as it represents schools in a stereotypical way. For example; in every school there is always one teacher that purposely attempts to intimidate his students, the one person everyone is scared of. This poem also portrays how small situations, when you are young can stay with you for the rest of your life. "Still smoudlering" This anthology is for you if you enjoy reading poems that are profound and have meaning. Carol Ann Duffy does not specialise in romanticism like many other conventional poets, but down-to-earth, realistic situations, which everyone can relate to in some shape or form. I honestly enjoyed analysing this anthology of poems for my English literature A-level, but if I weren't specialising in English, I would've read `Mean Time' for pleasure anyway. This anthology truly reflects Carol Ann Duffy's best work, and is well worth the time and money. A review of Mean Time by Carol Ann Duffy. I think the poems in 'Mean Time' are remarkable, so much so that I believe this selection should be made compulsory for GCSE level English. Duffy after all touches on so many tragedies endemic to the human condition which, while poignant, are also important to take note of. Such tragedies include our inability as humans to return to our past lives, a theme which is evocatively predominant in Beachcomber.
