Wonderful performance. Better than reading. excellent could hardly put this down. i havent read the taming of the shrew so had no idea what the story would be. i loved it the narrator was fab - love ALL ann tyler this is my first audible ann tyler tho have read most of her other stuff - loved kirsten potter the narrator and have tried to find something else she has narrated which i may like spent all the time i was listening to this saying PIOTER to myself Narration too slow I had to speed the narration up but story OK. I sympathised with Kate odd I'm assuming Anne Tyler really doesn't care for the original, I can't believe she doesn't know it. Either way, this is an odd re-telling. It starts off well and I liked the set-up. The characters of Kate and Pyotr were both quite vinegar-y, as is her father. The scenes at the nursery were very funny. Somehow it seemed to lose it's way though, once the wedding plans got underway. There was a long scene towards the end where Kate makes egg salad and then throws it away, which may be deep and meaningful but was a bit lost on me and just seemed a bit tedious. It almost felt like Anne Tyler didn't know what to do with the story having got to the wedding, but had a word-count target to meet! I did enjoy it, overall, and the narrator was very good once you got used to her rather precise way of speaking. I just wish the last quarter had been as good as the first! If this is your first Anne Tyler, it really isn't very representative - try something else of hers.

Members Reviews: Wonderful adaptations of Shakespeare for children Bruce Coville does a wonderful job at adapting these four Shakespearean greats for children. You can get them as story/illustrated books as well, they are fantastic. Two of the plays are told by one narrator, the other two use a full cast for characters. Both ways were fun, but the full cast definitely adds a lot of charm. I watched a group of 11-14 year old kids listen to this version of "Twelfth Night" to familiarize them with the storyline in preparation for performing the play. I loved watching them laugh and really "get" the plot, humor & all of it. Twelfth Night is one of the "full cast" productions and it is really full of humor. Duke Orsino is so well played, whiny, silly love-sick voice and all. I would definitely suggest this audio and/or the accompanying books as introductions to Shakespeare.

Christopher Marlowe brought something to the Elizabethan stage which it had lacked: nothing less than genius. First of all, for iambic pentameter so rhythmic and vigorous (Ben Jonson called it "Marlowe's mighty line"), it almost reads itself, which is one reason the occasional formatting slip and lack of notes in this Gutenberg edition are barely noticeable. Shakespeare took much from Marlowe. From this play, the dramatic compression of historical events. But Shakespeare in his plays at least, never portrayed a man's passionate love for another man as boldly as Marlowe does here: Enter GAVESTON. K. Edw. My Gaveston! The depiction of Edward's degradation and murder in the last act was years ahead of its time. The villain Lightborn is truly Jacobean. That this pitiable scene is otherwise surrounded by camp proves that Marlowe knew (instinctively?) when to 'sink' it. It was a pleasure to re-read this after many years. A Very Interesting Play Both To Read And For Study I liked reading this play very much. The play was composed by Christopher Marlowe. Marlowe was a contemporary of Shakespeare. Marlowe seems to have led a complicated life and died young under questionable circumstances. Marlowe and other playwrights including Shakespeare influenced each other. It is this that makes Marlowe's plays interesting to me.

Thank you for these wonderful 'translations' of Shakespeare's works. They make all the difference to me, a new student to Shakespeare, at the ripe age of 59 years old....now I can understand and appreciate these amazing works of literature. Much of what he writes makes my hair stand on end. What a genius ! Returning to Shakespeare as a senior citizen I enjoyed Shakespeare in college (50 years ago) and now I get to attend a class with adults who are reading just for the joy, fun, of learning discussing. What fun and this edition was wonderful - one side Shakespeare's words on the other side explanation of terms, etc, I tend to read out load and mostly get the meaning - but it is wonderful to go back and get the complete context. The story is so more nuanced when read at 68 than at 17. Try it you'll love it. and now I better understand Faulkner's references to the play This was the first time I had read any of the No Fear Shakespeare series. Although I was generally familiar with the story of Macbeth, it definitely made reading the play more enjoyable and understandable. I read this after finishing The Sound and the Fury, and now I better understand Faulkner's references to the play. I will definitely read more of the No Fear Shakespeare series. Yay for Shakespeare! Love Arkangel productions of Shakespeare plays. This is well done and a great way for children to experience the Bard. Perfect for Teens I got this for our 13 yr old daughter because I knew that she would like the story better if she could get around the language.

The book contains 101 Scripture verses paired with Shakespeare quotes, covering topics such as deception, hypocrisy, temperance, and the gift of life. It is a cute book, measuring 5 x 6.8 inches in size. Though some pages have are decorated with an image of Shakespeare or an image of the hands from Michaelangeloâs âThe Creation of Adamâ painting, the book is largely minimalistic in nature, and it is formatted in a pleasant and aesthetically appealing manner. Holy Shakespeare! is a great book to set on a table or shelf, and perhaps read a page or two from it every day. If you enjoy studying the Bible and reading Shakespeare, it is very interesting to see the Bibleâs influence on Shakespeareâs writing through this book. *I received a complimentary copy for review* JESUS is Holy What a wondrous, quaint, wistful and wise. I never would have put two and two together. Who would have thought that William Shakespeare was using the Scripture to write his sonnets, Plays and Poems? I love his writings and I never thought about it when I read his writings, when you read "With that dread King that took our state upon Him to free us from his Father's wrathful curse. Members Reviews: Empowering overview of Shakespeare's works and themes This is a great introduction for anybody who wants to start from scratch with Shakespeare. The courses are geared towards an assumption that the reader knows very little on the subject, which ultimately makes for a clear presentation. The professor focuses on a handful of Shakespeare's plays, going over the stories and then illustrating critical analysis tools, and putting them to work. This is the best part-- you first learn how he is going to analyze the play, then observe that very analysis at work. The idea is that you can then delve into these plays on your own with these collected analysis tools. Highly recommended! To Listen or Not to Listen This is a fantastic, but short, course providing techniques for understanding Shakespeare. Members Reviews: Enlightening and well presented Professor Clare Kinney does an excellent job of bringing fascinating insights to each of the plays she speaks to in this course. Her lectures are well structured, the information is accessible for the lay reader and above all, these lectures will invite and encourage those who have only a high school or college course experience with Shakespeare's tragedies to invest the intellectual energy toward a deeper understanding of the plays. Note that she doesn't speak to Romeo and Juliet, but (wisely in my view) includes Antony and Cleopatra. However, it would have been excellent if she had included both, in addition to the most popular tragic plays. Undoubtedly, she would also treat R & J with expert analysis as well. She left me curious and wondering what she would have to say. I wish that producer of The Great Courses would have left out the music and clapping between each lecture. His plays are unsurpassed for their beauty, language, and tragedy. If a production of "Julius Caesar" comes to town, I can see it with confidence after having listened to SmartPass' dramatization and commentary. What about the narratorss performance did you like? I love the use of multiple actors to bring the story to life. Members Reviews: Lowest WPM Ever I, in the late middle ages, have taken up a new appreciation of Shakespeare. He, of course, has influenced Western Thought for centuries. Dr. Bloom is clearly one of the rare Americans who can "bill" themselves as "Shakespearean Expert". I thoroughly loved the material presented BUT he has made the unfortunate decision of narating his own wonderfully insightful book. If you count (who would, but just "if you did get bored") words-per-minute, this product would win the award hands-down. Thankfully, on Dr. Bloom's "History of the Western Canon", he used a reader. A+ on content; C- on presentation. Epic Disappointment I was so excited to get this series of fourteen lectures from noted scholar Harold Bloom that I ignored a few tepid reviews. Boy, should I have heeded them. Bloom labors through these lectures which even if you speed up the audio as I did are painfully slow. Also, Bloom really gives few insights, indeed, most of the lectures consist of him reading enormous chunks of text and end with him saying something like "This is where Shakespeare makes his greatest and most profound...". Oddly enough, it seems that to Bloom every single play is the greatest literary achievement and will never be surpassed. However, to be fair, I did enjoy the pair of lectures on Macbeth but again, there are precious few true insights (though his insight into the sexual tensions of the Macbeth marriage was interesting). I think the problem that I had with these lectures are as follows: a. Bloom's delivery is ponderous and unpleasant, b. the lectures are repetitive, and c. there is very little analysis beyond saying how great, brilliant, and incomparable the plays are. Save your credits and your time. Only their brevity made this tolerable. The expert Prof. Bloom is the leading expert on Shakespeare. This lecture series is based on his book "Shakespeare, The Invention of the Human", and gives a deeper insight into the characters that are the icons of Western literature. Where does The Gap of Time rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far? Hard to say. I like the narrative--the novel is a lovely reworking of Shakespeare's wonderful odd pastoral romnance the Winter's Tale, but the narration is mixed, and much of it is awful, irritating. What did you like best about this story? The narrative and the weirdness of the genre that is romance. Who would you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators? I don't know. There are several narrators. Perdita is ghastly, as is Xeno (Polixenes), as is Pauline (Paulina). Perdita's voice is squeaky and irritatingly childlike for a 16-year-old (or is she 18?). Her Southern American accent struck me as unconvincing, but it's not as bad as Xeno's upper-class English twit accent/tone. I stuck it out because I wanted to know what happened, but my advice would be choose the print version for this one. Pity. A Masterful Retelling of A Winter's Tale What made the experience of listening to The Gap of Time the most enjoyable? A classic Shakespearean play was rewritten as a modern cautionary tale stuffed full of likeable and disreputable characters. Utterly believable and very compelling. Which character as performed by the narrators was your favourite? Pauline. Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry? I just finished listening to the commentary version (about 8 hours total), which consists of a full dramatic enactment of the play. Each scene is introduced by a helpful narrator who does a great job of keeping you up to speed with what's going on. She also gives you questions to think about as you listen regarding various characters and themes. Periodically throughout the action, the narrator breaks in to explain some of the important details, which I found to be very helpful and not at all intrusive. Her narration is enthusiastic and compelling, so it blends nicely with the action. In addition to this commentary version, you also get a non-commentary version (about 4 hours), which I plan to listen to next. Now that I have a good understanding of who the characters are and what's happening throughout the play, I'll be able to enjoy it uninterrupted, as Shakespeare intended. :^) By the way, this was my first audible.com selection, and I was very happy with the quality and usability of the recording. By usability, I mean the fact that it's broken up into several small chapters, ranging from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. It was easy to rewind a few seconds to re-hear something if I needed to. Overall it's very well done. I'm looking forward to the next one! Brilliant! When Othello asked Iago why he betrayed him, Iago declined to answer, adding more torment to Othello's pain. Any additional comments? What really made this spectacular production and analysis was Joan Walker's passion for the material. As the SmartPass guide, she brought the listeners along and made them feel the excitement of discovery.I loved it when she got angry at the characters or questioned their motives. She served as my personal guide to the worlds of Shakespeare and Othello. I would listen to this SmartPass Plus Audio again before seeing the play. Informative but irritating This Study Guide is very informative and well structured. It lends itself to VERY short study periods when covering the commentary, becasue the voices of narrators are extremely irritating. The tone of Ms Walker and Ms Akuwudike is that of infant school teachers adopting silly voices for under-fives. Patronising. To be fair, I have probably purchased a study guide intended for primary school children rather than adults.

I have gone through Macbeth in several forms (book, as well as "rock opera" by US band Jag Panzer and German band Rebellion), and had the impression that I understood most of it. This Smart Pass version shattered that belief... there is so much more to learn about Macbeth!!!! Smart Pass feeds the play to you "step by step", so you understand context and references, and clearly points out major themes. Once you have been through the "step by step" version, Smart Pass gives you the entire uninterrupted play to enjoy. I would recommend Smart Pass to anyone studying, or interested in, Shakespeare. I am definitely going to download more Shakespeare plays by Smart Pass! Excellent The play is interpreted by an excellent cast. It can be listened to for its own sake. But half the recording consists of the same interpretation but interspersed with interesting and intelligent commentaries. Even when one knows the play well, there is much to be learned. Fantastic Way to Listen to Macbeth This is absolutely the best way to read/listen to Macbeth. The actors are fantastic, and the commentary from the narrator is just right to explain what is happening and what the characters are saying (for those of us who have trouble understanding Shakespeare speak), without too many interruptions. There are great sound effects and the narrator is easy to understand and has interesting opinions. Highly recommend this book. By the way it is the perfect length. smartpass is a very helpful guide so Shakespeare the actors are great and the commentary explaining the important lines is very helpful. I do wish the chapters were broken up clearer: something like 1 act per chapter would be much easier to start with. I wind up making my own bookmarks to make up for this. Members Reviews: Wonderful in conception and execution Have you listened to any of Tina Packer and Nigel Gore s other performances before? How does this one compare? We were privileged to see the live performance of this material a couple of years ago in Boulder. Tina and Nigel make the concepts live and make them relevant to today's world. For those familiar with the cannon, it brings a new perspective to many of the characters. For those with less experience with Shakespeare, in each case the presentation gives enough of the background to help those unfamiliar with the plays understand the relevant plot and character. This is a wonderful production written by a woman who has lived the material and performed by two great actors. a deeply insightful book just wonderful. Among the best books about Shakespeare that I have ever read and I have read many. More Women of Will, and less Tina, "Nige", et al First of all, the premise of the book was fascinating to me. And on that level, it works brilliantly. It is engaging and informative, giving insights into Shakespeare's works, and specifically his treatment and presentation of women. I liked the knowledge the author brought to the subject, breaking down the subtext and motivations (by her own admission, conjecture) of Shakespeare himself. The book is definitely worth a read or listen for that alone. Where it starts to wobble is when the author starts assigning Shakespearean attitudes of the feminine and masculine onto contemporary issues. It's a bit facile, and the author is clearly out of her field of expertise, but it's tolerable. But the times where the author recounts her numerous experiences acting, directing and producing this material, it becomes slightly unbearable. She and her fellow thespians struggle with motivation and punching up some of Shakespeare's lesser efforts. (Anybody familiar with theatre people recognise this kind of narcissism straight away). Memoirs of a Shakespearean director, producer and actor may make for a fine book, but it's not why I bought this one. She finally acknowledges by the end of the book that the feminine and masculine are not strictly a binary system.

Good Background Info As a teacher, this guide gave me some good background information on the play itself, on Shakespeare, on his theatre, etc. Naturally, I read the play from our text, but as I told my students, there is nothing wrong with using a study guide to clarify certain points/language issues, for additional information, for study aides, etc. However, they were still expected to read the original play from our text. Great for kids Just the book for my grandson who wanted to read Romeo and Juliet but didn't like the "size" of the full copy. He really enjoyed this cliff note. Used as a companion to Shakespeare My son was reading Romeo and Juliet for the first time (his first time reading Shakespeare in fact). It was a bit tricky for him. I got him this Cliff Notes so that he could read the synopsis before reading each of the scenes as well as the character studies, etc. This really helped him get a better understanding of the play, and (most importantly), helped him LIKE Shakespeare! He wasn't frustrated at all!

Members Reviews: Very Helpful I have to read Shakespeare for my UCLA class. I was dreading just reading it by myself. We were encourage to watch performances of the production to help us understand what's going on. I had some extra credits at audibles, so I purchased this audio book which was very helpful. The "Pass Master" or narrator did a very good job of guiding me through the play. For my assignment, I read along. The "Pass Master" explains thing well. She translates unfamiliar terms, talks about theme and summarizes passages well. The play it's (with commentary) is very long (nearly 5 hours) but I felt I got so much more out of this audio version than I would have if I just read it or even watched it. There was another audio book that was a performance and commentary but because the audio clip did not give an example of how the performance and commentary would be mixed, I went with this audio because the sample demonstrated how the two were intermixed. I like the way the "pass master" interjects. Her voice is delightful to listen to. I wish they had "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Much Ado About Nothing" Henry the forth", Henry the 5th and hamlet in this series. That would make my last quarter at school go so well. Great for class! I used this with my class of 9th grade students. It is really very good. The play is read by different voices and there is a moderator who stops things when it gets confusing and explains what is going on. She gives a lot of history as well, which I thought was helpful. This book is critical to a full understanding of Shakespeare's writing and thinking. I loved it because it helped me to have a fuller grasp and perspective of the times, the political environment and the thinking of the period and of William Shakespeare. Slow and ponderous, like reading an A-level paper I started this with great interest, but was turned off within an hour. If one takes out the endless signposting of what the book will describe, you can chop out about 10%, but the major issue is the desperately ponderous prose. As an example, the book takes about 10 minutes to come to the conclusion that Titus and Andronicus was so violent because London was much more violent at the time, and that this was why it fell out of favour later. Wow, I would never have guessed. All of this might be fine if it were written in a lighter, pacier style. But in reality, it is reminds me of my own A-level essays written a thousand years ago; slow, dull and not worth reading. I have a new respect for, and guilt towards, my old English teachers.

Presumably other Shakespeare plays have a similar treatment. Listening to this version of Henry V combines the advantages of dramatic expressive audio with those of a careful reading, with time to "read" explanatory notes in context--so it compares well with other versions of the same material. Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How? There are multiple readers, which alternated to sort out the many characters and separate them from the explanatory material. Some of the readers are pretty lame (the one who plays the Dauphin is particularly awful), but the words are spoken clearly at a good moderate pace. Do you think SmartPass Plus Audio Education Study Guide to Henry V (Unabridged, Dramatised, Commentary Options) needs a follow-up book? Why or why not? It stands on its own and is quite thorough. It's possible that eventually a few of the contemporary references will need to be updated (such as when the commentary suggests a modern equivalent to a historical person or event). Any additional comments? It's hard to put together a study guide that's at the right level for everyone, and strikes a tone that everyone will like. This one introduces itself as your companion at the theater, who mutters in your ear every time a character says something you might not understand; since it isn't an interactive computer program, it has to guess at what you don't know, and if you have any familiarity at all with Shakespeare you will find many of the "translations" unnecessary. But the historical background is very helpful. The Socratic "question and answer" interludes sound forced and stiffly scripted, as does the earnestly cheerful "let's dig in and really enjoy this marvellous writing!" encouragement along the way. Therefore it's good that you can listen to the whole reading without interruptions after you've taken the time to understand each scene with the help of the commentary. Although you don't get the visuals of a theatrical performance, if you see it onstage much of the play is usually cut out; so this is a deeper experience that allows you to hear more poetry without distraction. Strongly recommend! Excellent guide to a Great Play After having thoroughly enjoyed the SmartPass Guide to MacBeth, I have now listened to King Lear as well. A much longer play, with a lot of complexity. The commentary version goes through the play in great detail. At some points, the play is significantly slowed down by it. However, once you listen to the full unabridged play without commentary afterwards, you can easily follow the main plot and all subplots, and you will start to appreciate the SmartPass help you received earlier on. King Lear is truly a Great Play by Shakespeare, it touches on many profound human emotions. The one element that annoyed me is the great emphasis on insanity (the Fool, Porton) which I think was "overdone". I personally favour MacBeth over King Lear. Looking forward to the next SmartPass Shakespeare play, probably I will go through Hamlet. I took a chance on this audio presentation by SmartPass based on listener reviews I read. I was not disappointed. The combination of play and commentary worked beautifully and kept me engaged and fascinated throughout. I will definitely download other SmartPass programs. A qualified critique If one has never read Lear, or any other Shakespeare, maybe this voice-over Lear would be informative. If, on the other hand, you have a passing knowledge of the play, any of Shakespeare's other works, the history and manners of Elizabethan England, or even the English language, this reviewer suggests giving this recording a pass. This series must have been conceived for high school students and this text is marred by dumbed down writing and teacherly, slightly condescending narration. I didn't think it was possible to make Lear unlistenable, but Mister Reeves and Ms. Walker have succeeded. My five star rating is for the play, which I consider Shakespeare's finest. The two stars are for the concept and execution of the voice-over narration. Shakespeare is fun! I'm using these guides to familiarize myself with plays that my son is in. They make the stories come alive and I listen to them over and over.
