This book is witty, clever and impulsive. When I started I was in a iron grip until I finished. The plot weaved a brillient and mystirious web that clogged my brain until I finished. This book was written for everyone, the old grannies sitting at a bus stop, the middle aged plucking out thier first grey's, teens in high heels dancing. It had every thing I would want in a book- suspence, happiness, wonder. It may not be the best book ever, but it is more than I ever expected. A great all rounder- it had everything and more. Twin Trouble(unbridged) I gave this book 5 stars because it is very good and i love all of Jaqueline Wilsons Books espallaliy this one.You should try to buy it because it is very good and it clams you and it is very funny and you will laugh your head of and it is very good.If you do buy it you would read it every night. rubbish I think this book is a pile of rubbish- it talks about lots of boring stuff but nothing interesting!!!!! I have read alot of this authors books and the rest were good but this one was total pants infact I think it is the worst book I have ever read (apart from Harry Potter but that's a different story) I would not recommend this book to anybody! One of the best books I've ever read! I think this book is cool.It will make you keep the book in your hands and not put it down. The charaters are great with each of them having different personalities. It will make you start reading it again straight after you finished it. twin troubles I thought this book was excellent,it was very funny. It had so many funny bits that i had to read it again and again. It is definatly worth a read.

Members Reviews: What's not to like? My kid loves ALL the Horrid Henry books. He has a lot of them and would continue to read any new ones that comes out. Personally, I don't like this mischievious kid. I'm afraid my kid might learn bad behavior from reading these books. But he's a boy and he love reading about that, so if it encourages him to read, I'm for it. The book is not violent,. Horrid Henry is just into pranks and making trouble. I think all kids get a laugh out of that. Priya I think the book is very interesting and also the last chapter of it is the best I would like to give this book to all my friends and say them it is awesome Great Really good and is very funny.I read it all in one sitting.I read it to my two little nine and five year old daughter's and they thought that it was really funny and I would recommend it to a friend. Five Stars The Horrid Henry series is a wonderful way to keep youngsters reading over the Summer. Great books! Grandson loved it.

Members Reviews: Epic The best narrator and book! I love it jack davenport is the best narrator in the world the best ever Fantastic Boys Action Literature Would you listen to Escape Velocity again? Why? Absolutely, this is the best one of the series. The author has really got into his stride. What other book might you compare Escape Velocity to, and why? We have also enjoyed the Artemis Fowl series and although not as witty, this is similarly great action. Which character as performed by Jack Davenport was your favourite? Tricky one, Hive Mind is excellent and Jack's 'Wing' is much better than the next reader's. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? Great movement all the way to the action climax Excellent book When I started the series I lived it and now that love has magnified and so far it is one of the best books I have ever listened to. I would recommend this to anyone of any age Escape velocity This book in my opinion is possibly the best book in the series Aldo with this book series you would have to read it in order in order to understand what happened I also like the different personalities and the ever action-packed story along with a brilliant narrator that adds personality to this book in my opinion this is a book that you could read over and over again loved it I thought it was an awesome book but is it just me or did they never really clarify who number 1 was like who the human body was

Williams Narrator: Martha Plimpton Format: Unabridged Length: 21 mins Language: English Release date: 05-12-09 Publisher: HarperAudio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: A funny book that makes you cry. A sad book that makes you laugh. A book about two sisters and their family that makes you wish you were part of it--and grateful that you are not. In short, this book is one surprise after another. The only thing that is not a surprise is that Vera B. Williams has created a wholly unforgettable, absolutely wonderful portrait of Amber, Essie, and their world. Open the book. You will never be the same again. ©2001 Vera B. Williams; (P)2009 HarperCollins Publishers Members Reviews: :) Received in excellent condition. Great book! Touching story of sisters This is a touching story of two sisters who are dealing with a tramatic event that had a significant effect on their lives. The art work is enhances the story and is great in it's own right. After I bought this book, I couldn't wait to share it with my own sister and other close friends who I knew would love it too. Sensitive, Heartwarming, and Unforgettable..... Amber was brave..."She could get the grocery man/to trust them for a container of milk/though their mother/couldn't pay him till payday/Amber wasn't afraid of the rat/in the wall under the sink/or of climbing up in high places" Essie was smart..."Essie could read hard library books/could thread a needle/cook toasted cheese sandwiches/make cocoa/put the lipstick on just right/when they played dress-up" Amber and Essie, two sisters, caught in the day to day struggle of hard times. Their mother is tired and sad, and works long hours for minimum wage. Their daddy is in jail for forging a check when he lost his job and needed money. There is never much to eat, the radiator's always cold, and the phone is turned off until their mother can pay the bill. But there are still the small pleasures of childhood...jumping on the bed together trying to touch the ceiling, playing beauty parlor every Sunday night with Mommy, dipping toast triangles in hot cocoa, making a "best sandwich" together with Wilson the bear. And there is hope.... Vera B Williams has written an unforgettable and poignant portrait of a family clinging to the edge. Her evocative text, told in free verse, is powerful, yet gentle, sensitive without being maudlin, and really illuminates the joys and sorrows of Amber and Essie's life. Her expressive and understated black and white pencil drawings capture the tough times and happier moments without being distracting. And Ms Williams includes vibrant, colored pencil, self-portraits at the beginning to introduce the girls, and a wonderful family album drawn by Essie and Amber, to complete this remarkable and heartwarming story, after the happy and uplifting ending. Perfect for youngsters 8-12, Amber Was Brave, Essie Was Smart is an engaging and endearing treasure, told with great insight and wisdom. Vera is brave, Vera is smart Adults have strong feelings when it comes to picture books. They sometimes believe that this form of literature serves one single purpose. To help kids learn how to read. While an incredibly worthwhile goal (don't get me wrong), allow me to point out that pictures books are hardly so limited. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Vera B. Williams' picture/poetry book, "Amber Was Brave, Essie Was Smart". Ms.

Members Reviews: Rip-roaring Boy's Own adventure! We have, in our 'big' car, those DVD players fitted into the headrests, so that the children can watch DVDs all the way down the M4. However, my - small - car has none of these, so - finding myself with a spare credit one day - I grabbed the original HIVE book, to keep my 11-year-old son amused on the shorter journeys we do. It's safe to say that we've both enjoyed the first two. Jack Davenport's voicing is first-rate, and has us in giggles whenever Franz speaks, and supports an excellent plot. In this follow-up to the original, the plot is faster paced and more directly into the action, and while adult listeners will probably guess the outcome of various events, it's still got plenty to offer in terms of one-liners and cliff-hangers. We're now well into the third of these, and the DVD players languish unused. Great Awesome This is a very good book and I enjoyed it a lot awesome I think that any person between the age of 9 11 would enjoy this An Truly excellent book In my most humble opinion I think this is an excellent book, right by an if a may and excellent righter. (oh yes I am sorry for my abysmal spelling) but it has one falling ascents are not shall I say perfect... but anyway as you can see from my review I am most satisfied! The series takes off This is the second in the Hive series- and it really takes off in this book. My youngest son (an avid 10-year old reader/listener) tells me this is one of the best in the series. Like all of them, OP contains childish fantasy violence, but is suitable and engaging for children of, I would say, 8 - 11. Milnes classic childrens stories - featuring Piglet, Eeyore, and of course Pooh himself - are both heartwarming and funny, reflecting the power of a childs imagination like no other story before or since. This charming audio edition is the ideal gift for children of five to 55. Members Reviews: Absolutely a treat! Excellent is the best description. Stories filled with lovable characters and beautiful language. Wonderfully recorded by some brilliant British performers. I believe these stories, read so well, help a child feel happy and secure by letting them slip away into an imaginative world that embraces them with love while still guiding them in some lesson of life. I recommend this for children as young as four years old, maybe younger, not to speak of enjoying it myself when listening with the grandchildren. I purchased this for the grandchildren (5 & 6) for last Christmas and will probably purchase "The House at Pooh Corner" for next Christmas. but she didn't love this one I bought this for my daughter on her 6th birthday. She likes Winnie the Pooh, but she didn't love this one. We read a few poems and then passed the book along to a friend who absolutely loved it for her sons ages 6 and 8. good writing Good writing and fun poetry. But a few of the poems were a little long for a small child to follow and keep interested. On the whole, I like it and will continue to read it to my child. I believe that the poems will grow on her, just like mother goose. I recommend this book. The never ending story of Pooh and friends It has been years since reading this story which I bought to read to my great grand daughter. Looking forward to sharing this wonderful story with another generation.enjoy the older drawings. Wonderful Classic! I grew up on the Winnie the Pooh Disney movies and the short picture books. But I recently realized that I had never read the original Pooh books! So that's why I bought this book (and it's sequel). This book is so wonderful and brings back so many memories of childhood and innocence! I enjoyed reading it, even as an adult! You're never too old for Winnie the Pooh! This book is the original and therefore it has black and white illustrations. I had no problem with the lovely black and white illustrations, but I know some people were hoping for color. So I figured I should specify that if you are looking for color or prefer color pictures, then this isn't the book for you. But like I said I enjoyed the book immensely and the illustrations are cute and very well done! This is a must buy for any Pooh Fan!

Title: Mama Don't Allow Author: Thacher Hurd Narrator: Tom Chapin Format: Unabridged Length: 10 mins Language: English Release date: 02-18-08 Publisher: Live Oak Media Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: Winner of the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Children, this high-energy production is foot-stomping fun. Tom Chapin's easy-going narration sets the tone for this story about Miles and his Swamp Band, whose music is in hot demand - from sharp-toothed alligators at an all-night ball where the band is earmarked to entertain and be the main course! Jazzy music plays throughout as Chapin both reads and sings this entertaining book. ©1984 Thacher Hurd; (P)2001 Live Oak Media Members Reviews: Mama Don't Allow - a wonderful and fun music-related children's book I came across this book after seeing it on Reading Rainbow. It is a cute story about a boy who plays "swamp band" music that his mama can't stand, so he goes and starts a band and plays his music for the Alligators on a river boat. The alligators want to eat the band when they are done playing, so the band plays a lullaby and puts them all to sleep. When the boy comes home playing that sweet song, his mama is finally happy about his music. I highly suggest watching the Reading Rainbow episode that goes along with this and listening to the reading - complete with sound effects. It will make you love this book even more! Having a kazoo around to make "swamp band" music of your own would also be fun. Five Stars This is a book I sing to my kiddos. K and 1st graders love it when read by volunteers My husband has been a volunteer at the local elementary school for 8 years and reads weekly to K and 1st grade...He has previously borrowed this book from the public library and decided it is time to buy his own copy to ensure that he has it when needed. The year always begins with this book as the kids love it ...they never want to stop singing the verses in the book as well as the ones they create, such as, "Mama don't allow no nose picking around here......" Alligator Fun Gift ... was liked Five Stars One of my favorite children's books. You must read with a New Orleans accent for the full effect.

This is especially worrisome since she has a secret: her first tooth is loose! A witty, and spot-on depiction of first-day-of-school jitters, this clever take on losing a tooth will reassure as it amuses both children, their parents and their teachers! In Countdown to Kindergaten, a five-year-old has 10 days until she starts kindergarten, and she's in trouble: she doesn't know how to tie her shoes. Certain that everyone in kindergarten must know how to tie their shoes - it's the rule! - she tries her best to learn. As the fateful day approaches, she still can't do it - what will she do? Told with wit and verve, this depiction of a child's anxiety is both empathetic and enjoyable.

Title: The Moral of the Story Author: Bobby Norfolk, Sherry Norfolk Narrator: Bobby Norfolk, Sherry Norfolk Format: Abridged Length: 58 mins Language: English Release date: 10-20-00 Publisher: August House Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: Based on the book by the same name, The Moral of the Story shows that character education, using storytelling and folktales from cultures around the world, can be fun, enjoyable, non-didactic, and remarkable effective; especially when enhanced by Bobby and Sherry Norfolk's energetic, charming interpretations. Included in The Moral of the Story are six fun, time-and-audience-tested tales accessible to listeners of all ages, from preschool to high school. Sit back, relax, and enjoy The Moral of the Story. Editorial Reviews: The easiest way to turn a child off his or her moral development is to get preachy. Bobby and Sherry Norfolk know this, and that's why they forego the lectures and instead perform their Folktales for Character Development in schools all over the country. These stories teach values and virtues like perseverance and honesty though a memorable vehicle that no one can resist: narrative. The voices in this audiobook are tender, compassionate, and humorous. The Norfolks introduce each story in order to direct listeners to its ethical foundation. For example, the first story in the audio anthology is a "hip-hop version of an old Norwegian tale" that teaches the "importance of generosity, sharing, and the results of being a bully". Members Reviews: Good fun! Great stories, excellently told!. Recommend for kids and storytellers. In fact I would recommend anything that was read by these two narrators. A collection of stories. That's it. What disappointed you about The Moral of the Story? I mistakenly read the publisher's review as this book being a resource on storytelling techniques. It is not. It is a collection of stories. What three words best describe Bobby Norfolk and Sherry Norfolk s performance? Energetic, child-friendly What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment? Disappointed that it was only a collection of stories.

Four stories, as brilliant and inventive as ever. This audiobook includes the following stories: 'Horrid Henry Tricks and Treats', 'Horrid Henry and the Bogey Babysitter', 'Horrid Henry's Raid' and 'Horrid Henry's Car Journey.' Critic Reviews: "The funniest series ever written about sibling rivalry and what it's like to be a young child." (Independent on Sunday) Members Reviews: Very good for young children! I really liked the sound effects I would recommend this audiobook to children aged 5 and under but of course older children could listen to this. My son really liked this but it might suit some girls as well A 6 year olds review! My Review of Horrid Henry and the Bogey Babysitter By Ben Wellby I like Horrid Henry and the bogey baby sitter because it is funny. It is funny because Peter, Henrys brother wears a bunny costume at Halloween. They also do a dinner which is very good because Henry puts some spicy sauce in his Cousin Steves soup. He runs across the room to get some water because it is too spicy because Henry added five drops of spice instead of three. Henry and Peter had to go to bed at 5 o clock when Rebecca the babysitter came who is very mean. This story is brilliant and I am 6

Milne Narrator: Alan Bennett Format: Abridged Length: 1 hr and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 01-27-09 Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: In these five stories, taken from the book Winnie-the-Pooh, Pooh goes visiting and gets into a tight place, Eeyore loses a tail, Piglet meets a Heffalump, Eeyore has a birthday and gets two presents, and an expedition is mounted to the North Pole! As usual they are accompanied by Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, and Owl - to say nothing of Pooh's very clever young human friend, Christopher Robin. Now with musical introduction, Alan Bennett's delightful readings bring each and every character in the Forest to life. Members Reviews: Pooh like it should be If you haven't heard Alan Bennett read Winnie the Pooh then you really should! I'm not sure I really need to say more. Alan Bennet is superb. The reading of the wonderful book, by Alan Bennet. For me is far better than the big cast readings. Highly recommended. Bedtime story Bennett reads with feeling and rhythm as always and his voices are excellent. However, the jingle after each chapter plays at a louder volume than the speech and is inclined to rouse my daughter from sleep. On trying it myself I found the same problem.

Title: 'It's a Fair Day, Amber Brown' and' What a Trip, Amber Brown' Author: Paula Danzinger Narrator: Dana Lubotsky Format: Unabridged Length: 33 mins Language: English Release date: 02-20-08 Publisher: Live Oak Media Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: It's vacation time again in What a Trip, Amber Brown, and once again Amber and Justin are off to the Poconos with their families. They're looking forward to loads of fun, until tempers flare when Justin teases Amber about her fear of the water. The ups and the downs are realistically conveyed, and the story is as exuberant and fresh as the seven-year-old herself. Members Reviews: An endearing and fun character who will appeal to lower elementary students After 'weaning' my kindergartner off the Junie B. Jones' books (which I frankly did not care for - the bad grammar, inappropriate language, and annoying child character), I did some research and found two characters which seemed appropriate for my daughter's level - Cam Jansen the girl detective with the amazing memory and Amber Brown. The stories are engaging and kept my daughter's interest (who reads at the second grade level). The fact that Amber Brown is an only child was also appealing to her because she is also an only child. In this audio collection there are two stories, i.e. "It's a Fair Day, Amber Brown", and "What a Trip, Amber Brown." In the first story, Amber is on vacation with her parents and is perturbed that her parents are constantly bickering. They go off to the local fair with the Daniels' and Amber gets lost. The happy ending was a relief and I felt the story was well-narrated. In the second story, Amber and her family as yet again on vacation in the Poconos with Amber's best friend Justin Daniels and his family. Amber is ready to have loads of fun but there are hiccups along the way. This is a great way for young children, ages 4-8 to get engaged with the stories and perhaps move on to the books after their listening experience.

Until something terrible happens... A beautiful, funny and sad story, told completely in verse. Winner if the Smarties Silver Book Award 2004 Critic Reviews: "One of the most original and moving books of the year...absolutely remarkable." (Daily Mail) Members Reviews: Good Book I like the book it was a very good book I think it taught a very good lesson. I think this was a good book with a good lesson. Original and Brilliant I read this book at the insistence of my English HOD. He said it was amazing, the best book he'd ever read, a masterpiece. His copy slowly made its way around the department, drawing the same response every time - wow, this book is incredible. Beautiful. Wonderful. Inspirational. By the time it got to me, there was so much hype surrounding "Cloud Busting" that I almost didn't want to read it. There was no way it could live up to its reputation... Needless to say, it surpassed it! Marjorie Blackman has written a gem. The style in which the book is written is so clever, and the story line grows and develops and twists and turns through poetry, prose, limericks, haikus, free verse, you name it! I feel so inspired to write my own story in chapters of verse. Thank you for this literary treasure, Ms Blackman!

Title: Zom-B: Underground Subtitle: Zom-B, Book 2 Author: Darren Shan Narrator: Zawe Ashton Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 59 mins Language: English Release date: 01-28-13 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: Can you hold on to your humanity when you're a monster? How do you face the present if you're haunted by the past? Where can you turn when you're trapped in a living nightmare? For B Smith, death is not the end! Members Reviews: Book Two PLEASE DON'T READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVEN'T READ BOOK ONE I don't want to have to worry about giving away any spoilers. So Shan did it to us again. The big twist in book one was that B wasn't a dude. That sure surprised me. I kept scanning back in book one to see if I could find what "B" stood for. It wasn't until near the end that we learned that B is for Becky. Book two stats with Becky awakening and coming to grips with the fact that she had done a horrible thing at the end of book one and ended up paying a big price for it. And now, as the "Zom-B" title suggests, Becky is dead and has come back as a zombie. Darnit! Book two has some interesting twists and revelations, but it went by too quickly for me. This has become my recurring complaint about this series: the books are too short. This series is going to end up costing me a fortune. They've been worth it so far. And yes, I'm planning to buy book three when it comes out. Keep 'em coming, Shan. all is well This is the 30th book by Darren I have read, a single entry has yet to dissappoint, and I am itching for more. His writing style is very fluid and engaging whilst intelligent and entertaining. I have always held the notion that many writers have one or two great books so I have never proclaimed a favorite amidst the veritable sea of imagination; however, I seem to have been proven false. I will read anything that Mr. Shan provides for as long as he has the passion for which he writes to us: the fans. Four Stars This book helped our nephew to do some reading that was beneficial for assisting with outside reading objectives. Yes. Just yes. loved this part of the story. Shan is a master. absolute master. shows that even humans are monstrous and that we can't escape . our inner beast. He manages to create a 3act tale in two hundred pages. a short book that says more than the average 300 -500 page tale. It's a little slow at first but quickly picks up 23% In. buy it now! My teenager loves this series.... My teenage son puts down his Ipod for Darren Shan and this series. He also loved the Demonata series. Kudos to Darren Shan for making a reader of my electronically addicted teenager.

Old enemies become new friends, and sudden victories turn to certain defeats as the time nears for everything to change. Critic Reviews: "A high-octane mix of modern adventure and ancient secrets.... I can't wait to see what's next." (Rick Riordan) Members Reviews: Great book I absolutely love this book. Alto of the time I laugh out loud reading it and sometimes I cry. I don't know wheneither or not to trust Marco. I hope Lay sees Jack is wayyy better and I hope Jack doesn't let the prophecy get to his head. The way this book ends (as a writer) is perfect but as a reader you are like noooooooo. I have to wait until I get the next book!!!!????? Come on!!! You're killing me!!!! Non-stop action! Excellent addition to the series! Can't wait for Book 5 to see what happens! Well-written story that should hook even the most stubborn anti-reading middle schooler! Loving this series. Excellent story telling, characters I find myself caring about, and a very creative premise. As one might expect from a middle book in a series, this one gets dark and ends on a dark note. My only complaint is that they are quick reads with loooooooong months between books being published. I've read many series, and this one, Harry potter, and David Eddings' Belgeriad are the ones that caused the most anxiety in w aiting and excitement on day of publishing. I'll let others tell you the plot and offer spoilers - I prefer simply to leave this review saying I really like these books, and have enjoyed them immensely, and am very annoyed that I have to wait for the next one. Disclosure: I do know the author. But I write reviews based on my appreciation for the art, not the artist. What can I say? Books 4 & 5 complete my sister's collection. She does like the author and would recommend this series to anyone. Love! I absolutely love every book in this series and this book is no exception. If you like to read Percy Jackson than you will love this series. I am a huge fan of fantasy series that have an element of myth and history to them.

Shes never felt more alone - until she meets Seb. Hes been searching for Willow his whole life - because Seb is a half-angel too.Sequel to the bestselling Angel, this is an irresistible story of loyalty, conflict and love for older children. Members Reviews: Long but enjoyable Angel Fire is a long book but it didn't feel like it as the journey of Willow and Alex continues and they find themselves up again the Angel council. Working out who is friend or foe is not easy and when another half angel and gang of AKs in Mexico City are discovered, the world that Willow and Alex had started to like gets turned upside down and heartbreak is inevitable. Although this book has the typical love triangle and trust issues that are found in a lot of young adult fiction, there is enough action and emotion running throughout to keep the momentum going, making Angel Fire an enjoyable read.

Members Reviews: A beautiful classic Would you listen to The Stray again? Why? Yes! It is a classic book from my childhood. A lovely little story and well read. What did you like best about this story? Hearing the full text. How well the characters were brought to life. Have you listened to any of June Whitfields other performances? How does this one compare? Cannot compare this is my first. Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry? It made me laugh. Wee Roly is a well written wee boy with great one liners. Any additional comments? A beautiful little book. Well worth a listen. Makes you want to be there and feel happy. Timeless tale, perfectly narrated. This is a marvellous story well told. Originally obtained for my young daughter (who played it often, and remembers it fondly), this gem has been in the family for many years now - and I STILL enjoy listening to it on occasion. It covers many levels really; innocently profound and thoroughly heart-warming. It's a tale of taking risks, going with the flow, the kindness of strangers who trust their instincts, family, and friends. The words wrap gently around you like a cozy, well-loved blanket. Simply put, this is a story that soothes the soul.

(SEN Magazine) "The latest title in the Magical Children series deals with bullying and focuses on football. Andrew Sachs' interpretation of this series has reflected their humour and poignancy perfectly." (Publishing News) "It is a relief, amid so much arch and knowing children's entertainment, to settle down to a straight-forward, well-told tale, with clearly defined characters and a happy ending. The incomparable Andrew Sachs Is relaxed without being casual, his glorious voice rising above the sound effects of slurps of tea and suchlike. A delight, that also smuggles in the lesson that football isn¿t just a game, it is a metaphor for life." Title: The Seeing Stone Author: Kevin Crossley Holland Narrator: Samuel West Format: Abridged Length: 3 hrs and 41 mins Language: English Release date: 05-05-06 Publisher: Orion Publishing Group Limited Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: In the many-layered novel of which this is the talking book, King Arthur is seen as a figure for all time, an exemplar to his namesake, a mysterious presence influencing not just one time and place but many. The 100 short chapters are almost like sound bites, not only of the mythical past of King Arthur but the real, earthy, uncomfortable Middle Ages. The turn of the century; uncertainty about the future; war and peace; Christianity and Islam; rationalism and superstition; the sharp contracts in the lives of rich and poor; all these issues impact on the life of a boy in a medieval manor and give the book its uniquely contemporary feel. The Seeing Stone is a unique and brilliant new take on the Arthurian story-cycle. The author is a magician with words and his light, speedy narrative is as easy to listen to as it is poetic. Critic Reviews: "Fun, intelligent highly enjoyable stuff." (Time Out) Members Reviews: Hooray for Arthur Wonderful, intriguing and evocative story, and a great way to introduce children to the Arthur story. My 12 year old son (not a great reader) loved listening to it on the long drive to Cornwall (his parents enjoyed it too) and now wants to read the second volume in the series as a real book!

One of my favourite stories, love listening to it whilst doing other boring things like tidying up! The right side of spooky I downloaded this book for Halloween listening for my 6 and 4 yr old boys - crossing my fingers that it wouldn't be too "girly" (as it's essentially about the search for love) or too scarey. In fact this book is fantastic. Yes it does have lots of atmospheric descriptions of devilish mazes, hedges dripping blood and unpleasant familiars, but it's done in such a matter-of-fact way to seem normal for those characters. No nightmares from either of my boys. Even when some of the spells go wrong, they were gripped rather than scared. River's review I liked the voices lots and lots. I also liked the names. And a good story . By River aged 7. Fantastic This audio book was absolutely fantastic! The narrating was hilarious-the whole thing was really funny, well written and imaginative! Loved it and would recommend it to everyone. 5star book! A story for children I have fond memories of listening to this book as a child. Prunella Scales has a wonderfully expressive voice which gave the characters life. I was feeling nostalgic one day and got it into my head to listen to this again. It was just like I remembered, Belladonna the White witch, Aramond the Wizard, Terrance and rover and the black witches warts and all!

But after one messy incident too many he's told to go home - he just doesn't fit in. It doesn't take long, however, for everyone to realise that too much neatness and order isn't always a good thing and everyone's desperate for Dandylion to return! At last, Dandylion feels like a wildflower in the right place! An empowering story about friendship, diversity and finding your place. Members Reviews: A dandy book! Dandylion is a delightful book. It is about a new student (who happens to be a bright yellow lion). He is bouncy, messy, noisy, and FUN. However, his antics finally get his classmates into trouble, and they become unhappy with him. Dandylion stops going to school. The children miss his vibrancy. The situation is resolved in a very heartwarming way in which a 'weed' is defined as a 'wildflower growing in the wrong place'. Reading level is high first/early second grade. The author skillfully uses print features such as ellipses, wiggly lines, bold and decorative font, as well as a variety of fonts. In doing so, the print itself imitates the vibrant and unique main character of the story - Dandylion. The illustrations also accentuate Dandylion's character in that they are in muted colors while Dandylion is always portrayed with bright yellow. This is an excellent book for teaching reading, acceptance of others, and authors' craft. We gave the preschool a copy of this book when ... We gave the preschool a copy of this book when my granddaughter graduated. We hope that all schools appreciate each and every child - including the Dandylions! Kiddo is in love! My kiddo is offbeat, like me. This book has helped show him that it's okay to be a wildflower. :) Five Stars My nephew loves this book. The story is just adorable and the illustrations are perfect I came across this book today at a consignment store and felt the need to leave a review. Members Reviews: My kids loved it. I've been in the Army since before my kids were born, so they're used to that. It was a bit of a shock to them when my wife shipped out to Air Force Basic Military Training. It wasn't unusual for me to work late, miss weekends or even get deployed, but the longest they had gone without their Mom was five days (when she and I took a vacation). The kids adapted well; I reminded them often that what Mom was doing was important and they were very proud. The hardest adaptation was probably for me, getting used to playing "single parent"/Mr. Mom. Somehow, amidst all of that confusion, I found this book. The kids loved it and it helped reinforce the positive aspect of their Mom being gone. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that it doesn't hold the attention of an adult reader. That may be a little unfair because it IS a kids book. Amazing Children's Book for all kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely loved reading another great creation by Author Mary Lee. She has truly done it again for the children and this book was so easy to read. I loved all the illustrations. Kudos Mary and I look forward in reading many other children books you create. Keep up the excellent work! Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star review Reading Ages: 4-8 Reviewed by: Kris Quinn Christopherson Synopsis: This picture book explores customs and courtesies of military culture through a child's eyes. Author Mary Lee takes your child along with her fictional character Susie on a journey of discovery. From military uniforms through a military child's 'rite of passage' full circle to Susie's development of a sense of pride and patriotism in our country. My Air Force Mom shows children that the military offers careers to women as well as men. It gives military moms and dads a book to help their young children begin to understand military life. My Air Force Mom gives civilian parents a tool to explain mysteries of military life to their children. Overall thoughts: A winner in the Children's Fiction Category of the 73rd Annual Writer's Digest Writing Contest, this fun book does an excellent job of explaining the military life to children. I really liked how it was written from the view point of the daughter, and that it was about her mom - another fantastic reminder to all that girls proudly serve in the military. The author was able to capture the pride the daughter has for her mom's occupation, and the excitement she feels for being a part of the military community. Cute and Informative My Air Force Mom by Mary Lee is a beautifully illustrated children's book that helps explain to kids about the basics of military life and the importance of our military.

Simple language and limited suspense make it an appropriate read aloud selection for the preschool through elementary age child. Members Reviews: My 3 and 5 year old grandsons loved this book My 3 and 5 year old grandsons loved this book! They wanted me to read it over and over. They love 'scary' stories...but not too scary! It was the perfect campfire story to read to them when they were camping out on Grandmama and Grandaddy's farm. Grandmama read the story and Grandaddy did the camping! We want more stories from this author as The Beast of Blue Mountain is getting a little "dog-eared" from reading it so much! Lovely story by a fantastic author! Lucy Adams is a new author for me, but her words are magical! The Beast of Blue Mountain is a great book for children and adults in the mood for a little fantasy and adventure as they read the little ones to sleep! It kept Mommy interested too! After so many children's books that require a nap half way through, this book was a pleasant change of pace. I read it to my four year old daughter and at first I was thinking it may be too scary, but I kept on. She was captivated by it. The reason she was captivated was because this book is fun to read out loud. I wanted to read this book with a lot of animation in my voice. My daughter hid her head, gasped where she should and giggled. At the end of the book she laughed and said, "I like that book, it is really funny." It will remind the reader of the good 'ole campfire stories that we all loved to be "scared" by. A great fun read for children and adults. A Must-Have Book to Read With Your Toddler....Love It! What a Great Book to read with your toddler! It has the perfect mix of suspense and humor to keep any child interested. We loved pretending to have the voices...even more laughter! A "Must-Buy" if you have little ones. "What is that?"...Lucy Adam's newest book! "What is that?"...Lucy Adam's newest book, "The Beast of Blue Mountain". After thoroughly enjoying "If Mama Don't Laugh, It Ain't Funny" and "Tuck Your Skirt in Your Panties and Run", I was really looking forward to reading this one. It did not disappoint. My girls could hardly wait for me to turn each page. Curiosity almost got the best of them as they waited to find an answer to "What is that?".

Hipp Narrator: Raymond Chadwick Format: Unabridged Length: 20 mins Language: English Release date: 10-24-13 Publisher: A Different Kind of Safari LLC Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: What do you need to feel happy about being different? Based loosely on real life experiences, this heartwarming and powerful book illustrates how self-awareness, and courage help a young boy named Raymond learn the difference between seeing things as they appear to be and seeing things as they are. While on Safari in Africa during 2001, Helen Hipp and her young family witnessed something few get to see a pink hippo. Separated from the pod and barely tolerated due to her differences, Hipp's son Ray felt an instant affinity to the hippo he'd now named "Rosie." Inspired by the effect Rosie's place within the pod had on Ray, who has special needs and has experienced his own challenges with acceptance, Ray finds himself soon carried into a world beyond labels and challenging assumptions. You will never guess what happens next! Members Reviews: Highly recommended in particular for children on the autism spectrum This is a picture book story about Ray and Rosie. Ray is a young boy from Vermont who's visiting Africa with his family; Rosie is a different kind of hippo. She's pink instead of gray! Ray asks her if it bothers her that she's different, and her response is one that I would hope all young readers take to heart: at first it did, but not anymore. Ray is different too â it's difficult for him to talk to other people. He's more comfortable alone, but he wishes he were more like the other kids. Rosie takes Ray on a trip down the river, and along the way Ray meets a crocodile who also defies his expectations, and hears the story of Eli-zee, a different kind of horse who discovers there are very important strengths to her differences. Ray "wakes up" under an umbrella tree, and realizes that his "dream" was a different kind of safari (safari is the Swahili word for "long journey," Ray's Grandpa explains). By the end of the story Ray has started to understand that you can feel happy about being different, and shares his thoughts with his Grandpa. I think this is a great story for kids at an early-to-mid elementary level. Many kids have something that makes them feel different, in particular kids on the autism spectrum. I have two children on the spectrum, and they've always struggled to fit in with their peers. The older of my two in particular badly WANTS to fit in and be accepted, but recognizes that he's "different" from other kids his age. A story like that can help children like my son understand that it's okay to be different â and sometimes (oftentimes) it's even BETTER to have your own unique differences! I received a complimentary ecopy of this book for review purposes; all opinions are my own. A Universal Message that Everyone Needs to Hear I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. A Different Kind of Safari tells the story of Ray who is on vacation in Africa with his family. But then B finds strange signs all over the city - a "Z" plus red arrows. Following them, B finds The Angels - a group gathered in the hopes of combating the evil dead and the forces that introduced them. But all is not as it seems and it's up to B to find out: what battle are they truly waging? Members Reviews: Zom-B Angels Book #4 takes B out of isolated London and introduces her to Dr. Oystein and others like her. Dr. O's story and history have him in the forefront of finding ways to help the revitalized with a longer life (B hoped to live for a few months and now Dr. O guarantees much more) and he has named them "angels" and they fight and train daily to combat the evil forces of Mr. Dowling and his zombies. B is still as prickly as ever BUT she still has her reservations about Dr. O and Master Zhang even though all the other kids LOVE their life together. I am looking forward to the next book and what happens with B- will she stay or continue on her own journey??? Dynamite! Another fast-paced segment in the Zom-B series. Darren Shan doesn't let down his readers in this one. Well written, the story moves the main character B along on her unusual journey as a zombie. Can't wait for the next one. Oh yeah, I'm old and I loved it. Didn't put it down from the first page to the last. Daughter is a teen and she loved it. Of course we own a copy of all Shan's works. He consistently hits home runs with his ability to write for the teen market. Whoa I have to say that Darren Shan is the coolest author around. Wonderfully creepy and intense. Shan always finds a way to take his storylines to the next level of awesomeness. I am on pins and needles waiting for the next one. Darren Shan never disappoints My son has read every series by Darren Shan and has loved them all. He loves this series just as much as Cirque de Freak, his only complaint is they are too short. He longs for more. Good for kids 11 years or older, some content is for a more mature reader. a suspenseful book Darren Shan's series are always fast paced page turners with grisly details! I highly recommend this series to any one. I tarted reading cirque du freak when I was in middle school, I'm know in college and still a fan of his books. This is the fourth book in the zom-b series.

Does he keep it and use the money for himself? Will he succumb to the temptation of some new shoes, a cool lemonade or the teasing of his friends? No! Honourable Little Croc is off to find the owner. And when the owner of the purse lets him keep it and the money inside, he soon realises that being honest is its own best reward! A brand new heart-warming tale from Dandylion creator, Lizzie Finlay! Members Reviews: Great book for lessons in honesty. I love this book and the lesson in honesty that it teaches. I highly recommend it as a conversation starter for young children. Finders does not mean keepers. good lesson presented in a story My five year old granddaughter loves this book and wants to read it over and over. the story makes its point A Tale of Courage and Integrity for Young Children The children were enthralled. Would Little Croc, in his determination to act with integrity, make it past mean Murdock? The cad wanted to steal the purse that Little Croc was turning in to the police station! And how about those lovely red bootsâon special no lessâand a cool glass of lemonade on a hot day? Surely he could borrow from the rightful owner . . . or could he? Then there was the panhandler . . . . I loved reading this book to the children age five and up at our local day care. And perhaps they were as moved as I was near the end of the story when Little Croc gave Murdock his first present ever. This story lends itself to dramatic reading, and the illustrations are a wonder. With just a few strokes, Lizzie Finlay portrays curiosity, pleasure, menace, effortâand the joy of a well made choice. Review from Books That Heal Kids This story reminded me of the word temptation. Kids (and adults) can be put in positions where they are tempted to make the wrong decision - because they might benefit. Long story short here.....Little Croc does the right thing but not without his friends pressuring him to keep the purse. In the end, he gets to keep the purse as his reward for being honest. The only thing I would change in this story is putting more focus on the internal rewards he received for doing the right thing. Sure, it's great he gets the purse - but that's not the TRUE reward. Make sure to go into this with your kids/students. Definitely glad this is on my bookshelf. There are not a ton of good picture books on stealing so I'm happy to see this one published. Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children Little Croc's game of hide-and-seek with his friends took on an unexpected twist when he found a purse filled with money. Although his friends all wanted to divide up the cash, Little Croc decided to do the right thing by bringing the lost purse to the police station. Many temptations for spending that money lay along the way, though. Would the purse and all the contents ever find their way to the rightful owner? A lesson at the end of the story about saving, sharing, and spending money make the book a useful vehicle for talking with young children about some of the basic functions of money. Humorous illustrations help to liven up the story and encourage children to think about the scruples of finding lost valuables.

Her artistic parents and doting siblings adore her, but Saffy wants a piece of her past. So when her grandfather bequests a stone angel to her, Saffy knows she has to find it. Realising that her childhood in Siena holds the key, she secretly stows away on a car trip to Italy, with her new friend, Sarah. Meanwhile, the rest of her family are engaged in their own wacky projects. Caddy, a hopeless student, is studying for her A Levels and desperately trying to pass her driving test. Indigo, the sole boy of the Casson family, is determined to rid himself of this fear of heights. And the youngest, Rose, a budding artist, has a knack for baiting her pompous dad, with entertaining results Members Reviews: Brilliant, funny, believable, completely fascinating It's highly unusual to find a series of books that is well-written (brilliantly written, in fact), warm, funny, and believable....AND that just keeps getting better. This is the only one I can think of right now -- even classics like THE TREASURE SEEKERS and SWALLOWS & AMAZONS start to lose energy (and credibility) with the later books. It's also unusual to find books that make you laugh and cry, without ever veering into sentimentality. The writing throughout is brilliant -- and she has a way that I can't quite figure out of sometimes building up to a big scene, then skipping over it and letting what happened emerge in dialog which only intensifies the emotional effect. I don't want to say anything about what happens, because suspense is part of the fun, too. READ THEM. I have just finished REreading the whole series (SAFFY'S ANGEL, INDIGO'S STAR, PERMANENT ROSE, CADDY EVER AFTER, and FOREVER ROSE) for the second time. I don't understand why these books aren't famous! I only found out about them because a friend did the new covers and posted about McKay's brilliance on Facebook. I am recommending them to everyone I know. My only regret is that the copies I got had the old covers (stock photos of girls) -- apparently the new ones won't be sold until the old ones sell out. The new covers are charming and capture the characters perfectly, judging by the only one I got (INDIGO'S STAR). Libby Koponen (author) Love the Casson Family All of the books in the Casson Family series are great: A nice mix of humor and heart. They are very relatable to a large age group of young readers, which is unique since some can find it difficult to match age and reading level without being bored or delving into topics that are too sophisticated or heavy. There are a few British jokes and phases that may be lost to the American audience, but nothing that interferes with the enjoyment of the books. Highly recommended. This makes a great read-aloud! I love the Casson Family books. No one in them is perfect, but there is no character I did not end up liking. They deal with some tough family issues - adoption, marital difficulties, physical disabilities - while managing to be completely hilarious. Nothing is glossed over, yet nothing is too scary for young kids. All ages can enjoy these four children, whose artist parents have named them all after colors: Cadmium Gold, Indigo, Saffron, and Permanent Rose. Saffron, the only one of the four whose name is not on the artists' color chart on the kitchen wall, embarks on a quest for the real source of her name.

Beetle McGrady Eats Bugs! Audiobook by Megan McDonald

Author: Megan McDonald Narrator: Jessica Almasy Format: Unabridged Length: 19 mins Language: English Release date: 04-24-12 Publisher: Recorded Books Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: From the New York Times best-selling author of the Judy Moody books comes this hilarious story about a precocious youngster whos thinking about eating her first bug. Beetle McGrady loves adventure and she wants to explore the world. When her class makes a food pyramid, she decides to add a new food group of her own - bugs! Beetle knows that people in other parts of the world eat bugs everyday, so when the other kids dare her to eat an ant, the real fun begins! Members Reviews: Such a fun story We read this book from the library and it was a must own! With a 4 year old who eats just about anything, it was fun to add the concept of bugs as well. Great story around dealing with how others might think of you or judge you, and just being happy about being yourself. Survivor-Like Challenge at Elementary School Although young Beetle McGrady yearns for the adventure and fame achieved by Amelia Earhart, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Marco Polo, all she gets is a dare to eat an ant during "Fun with Food Week." She decides that eating insects is pretty mundane, especially when she just can't get one past her mouth. All this changes when Chef Suzanne, the Paul Prudhomme of insect cuisine, comes to school with such delights as toasted cricket, Chinese chop-suey ants, grasshopper tacos, and Mexican stinkbug salsa! In a truly gross-out scene, Beetle is shown with a cricket leg sticking out of her mouth, with another speared cricket on the way. Beetle's adventuresome spirit (and hardcore stomach) earns her the pioneer status that she craved. Jane Manning's prose captures the free-flowing rhythms of the school day, and the kids' talk is realistic, including both good-natured teasing and supportive reassurance. The story is on the frenetic side, especially with the arrival of the zany chef Suzanne, and there's a madcap tangle of bugs and kids after her arrival. The writing is generally fun to read: "She closed her eyes. She, Beetle McGrady, set the itchy-twitchy, buggly-wuggly ant on the tip of her tongue. The ant was tickly. The ant was creepy. The ant was crawly. If she ate the ant, she would be a real explorer. A true pioneer. Beetle A-for-Anteater McGrady!" McDonald also includes some fun-with-food humor. Roger calls falafel "Awful-awful," Lacey claims that succotash gives you a rash, and, in a statement so precise and egocentric that it rings especially true, Mona complains that "Fish eggs smell like caviar." Jane Manning `s exaggerated drawings of Suzanne and the fleshy, big-faced kids have a "Mad Magazine" look, and she spares little in her depictions of cooked bugs. Still, the book is not entirely consistent. Beetle's fun tips on eating bugs ("Can't eat a mealworm? Close your eyes and pretend it's spaghetti--slurp!") contrast with pictures of smiling bugs holding anti-bug eating protest signs. Only those who like a fairly high gross-out factor will enjoy viewing the insect dishes and McGrady's eating. Moreover, while this is a silly, obviously far-fetched yarn, the repeated connection between bug eating and self-esteem is a reach.

But Fox died and the babies were hidden away for years. Now theyre teenagers and unaware that their psychic powers are about to kick in. Cocky, charismatic Nico thinks his emerging telekinetic abilities will bring him money, power and the girl of his dreams. Hes about to find out how wrong he is. Members Reviews: Could have been so much better I'll make this quick as I don't have much to say about The Set Up apart from the fact that it wasn't as satisfying a read as I had expected it to be. The concept was interesting, so I gave it a go and it turned out that the execution didn't complement the idea. Based on the blurb, I knew I wasn't in for much of an original story but I had hoped it was going to be more enjoyable and intriguing, which, I'm sad to say, it wasn't. I didn't mind that it was predictable, and I knew what was around the corner. I had expected as much. I was excited about the journey, not the destination. The characters were a little underdeveloped and whiny for my liking, and I ended up not caring what happened to them. From a scientific angle, not much was explained about the operation of the Medusa Project. It should have been explored more. At times, I felt as though the author underestimated the readers intelligence, primarily because of the targeted age group. I found the context a little patronizing, which was a shame because the intricacies of characterizing a scientific experiment would have been great to explore. It definitely would have made the story more exciting. The story dragged in places. I found myself wanting to skip a few chapters but I soldiered on as I did see the potential of what it could be, and I was hoping and waiting for that something that would encourage me to pick up the next books in the series. Unfortunately, that something never appeared, so I think this is where I jump ship. I think readers between the ages of 10-12 would enjoy the story. The mentality of the characters seemed fitting for that age group. It was an okay read, but it could have been so much more. It turns out I had a lot more to say than I'd thought. Pretty good fast paced action I just read _The Medusa Project: The Set-Up_. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and while it was easy to see how a lot of the points were going to resolve before they did, I still enjoyed the book. As an adult, a parent and a teacher I especially liked the beginning of the book where the main character, Nico, feels that his step-father is treating him like a child and chooses to align himself with another adult that the step-father does not trust and in the end it turns out that the step-father is right and this other adult is taking advantage of Nico and eventually Nico learns his lesson. Teenagers not trusting the adults in their lives is a fact of life for most adolescents. Parents and other authority figures need to be more open with the adolescents they care for often times. Because of resentment about how they are being treated, teenagers often turn to adults who are not good role models. All of this rang very true in the story. I would highly recommend this book to any middle schooler or high schooler. Poor start to a good series. Overall this qualifies as a book marginally above average but some horifically written passages left me wanting to throw this into a fire.

Moving to Africa is the worst thing that has ever happened to Benny Shaw. No one plays hurling (the best game on the planet), and the local school is run by hippies who like to talk about feelings. As if. But when Benny meets wisecracking Omar (the name's Bond, James Bond Omar) who only speaks English in TV catchphrases, he decides that maybe life in this new country can be fun after all. Members Reviews: Funny and a light read, but no Artemis Fowl [NO SPOILERS] I enjoyed the Artemis Fowl series immensely, finding them original and quirky. I located this one on the Kindle store and thought that I might as well try it. I understand that Eoin Colfer wrote this in his early days of writing. It has some funny parts, and being Irish myself, it's nice to see the references to hurling, which wouldnt be found in other books. What I didn't really like about it is the fact that the climax fell flat. I had to read over it three times to figure out what was going on. Action scenes aren't Eoin's strong point, even sometimes in the Artemis Fowl books, but the mistakes were really apparent here. The tension was all over the place, dropping the suspense like a stone. The prose was confusing in places and I didn't enjoy it at all. What could've been an amazing scene just... wasn't. The plot was also quite light, with a lot of filler. SImple enough story, done a few times: boy goes to foreign country, hates it there, then meets an oddball character on the wrong side of the law. It had a lot of padding, namely some comical scenes, that I did enjoy but they felt like they were dragging the plot down a little. All in all, it was quick to read and had some good moments, but the writing and fluffy plot let it down. I love Eoin Colfer's later books though, (I absolutely reccommend the Artemis Fowl series) and hope he keeps writing. This is a great book for young boys This is a great book for young boys. Eoin Colfer is amazing as usual with his mastery of story-telling, realism, fun and wit, and a tinge of sadness. Good for adolescents facing a possible change of cultures as families move because of work transfers. good read! Regardless of whether you are an adult or a child (or looking to purchase something for one or the other), this book is a good read. Eoin Colfer is a transformational author being able to easily write sci-fi to reality. Good story! pretty dang obvious that this is one of Colfer's first ... It's....pretty dang obvious that this is one of Colfer's first works. Not BAD, but just barely adequate for publishing. Honestly, I'm surprised this one got an audiobook recording at all. It's just...very mediocre. While there's something to be said about Colfer's look at a country I've never seen referenced in literature (except...Colfer's own, in the second Artemis Fowl book....), there are a few points where things feel a bit wrong. I was shocked when the mother of the family referred to Tunisa as "some uncivilized pit, with diseased water and mosquitoes and foreigners," going on to claim that "the only culture they have belonged to the Romans." This is very early in the book, but we never really get a refutation of these pretty prejudice words.

One identity. He can change his life if he says yes. An explosive new mystery from the award-winning author Jenny Valentine, The Double Life of Cassiel Roadnight is the story of a boy who assumes the identity of a missing teenager and in so-doing unearths a series of shattering family secrets and the truth about who he really is. With all the classic hallmarks of a Jenny novel a fantastically strong, sensitive, and memorable first-person narration; themes of loss and betrayal, family secrets and personal identity; and truly quality writing that is 'literary' but never inaccessbile or pretentious. This is the thrilling new novel from the author of Finding Violet Park. Members Reviews: Really enjoyed Some parts could have been better (I wish he'd come up with some story about losing his memory or something so could focus more on other aspects) but I was intrigued and invested throughout, some lines really sticking with me (bookmarked 14 parts to come back to later) and some revelations broke my heart a bit. Really felt the moments and characters. The sister and mum weren't as believable to me but could have been the narrator (who was overall good but not sure about the female voices). Would love a sequel with more Floyd and identity exploration.

When the good-looking boy with the American accent presses the dropped negative into Rowan's hand, she's sure it's all a big mistake. But the next moment, he's gone, lost in the crowd of bustling shoppers. And she can't afford to lose her place in the checkout queue after all, if she doesn't take the groceries home, nobody else will. Rowan has more responsibilities than most girls her age. These days, she pretty much looks after her little sister single-handedly which doesn't leave much time for friends or fun. So when she finds out that Bee from school saw the whole thing, it piques her curiosity. Who was the boy? Why was he so insistent that the negative belonged to Rowan? Critic Reviews: "A wonderful debut for many reasons. What marks this book out is not just its charm, warmth and wit, but also the skill with which Valentine braids together the threads." (The Guardian) "No plot summary can do justice to the particular flavour of this book, both witty and with moments of genuine sweetness. Excellent." (Books for Keeps) "Ultra-original and brilliantly written, this will have you laughing and crying too." (Mizz Magazine) Members Reviews: Great story Nicely plotted story that shows, through the eyes of the protagonist, Rowan, how a family is still coming to terms with the loss of the oldest son some time after the event. Sensitively handled issues and realistic characters. Highly recommended.

(Publishing News) Members Reviews: WOMBATS! *****SPOILERS READ AT YOUR OWN PERIL***** One of the funniest stories about the life of a wombat, beginning with the easy life cycle of the wombat. Then the Wombat realizes that there are humans that are living near by, then proceeds to show the destructive nature of the wombat. But from the Wombatâs point of view it isnât being destructive, it is merely requesting things and not understanding the difference between the human world and the wombat world. The wombat receives carrots from the humans, and since then have been terrorizing the humans to get the carrots. That was the first mistake they made, as they continue to give the wombat carrots, and when the wombat is tired of carrots, the humans then feed it oats. The wombat considers everything he or she is doing as just part of his life, and some of the things he is doing he considers as a help to the humans. I felt it was an innocent way to describe the different perspective that animals and humans have. What we consider as an animal being destructive, animals are merely looking for food. They do not understand the difference. It is also a lesson of not feeding wild animals. they become too comfortable with humans and messes with their natural life. At the end the wombat decided that humans are easy to train and make good pets and decided to live under the house of the humans. The art was cute. The story was hilarious. I couldât help but laugh at the story. I recommend it! For grandson Gave this to my 17-year-old grandson, whom I nicknamed "Wombat" years ago. He enjoys all things wombat. It's a kid's book but darned cute, and he finds it highly amusing. Adorable! This story is charming and adorable! After reading it to our 8-year old we just HAD to YouTube Wombats and --of course-- now she wants one. :) This (along with two other books) was a Christmas gift and while she thought "The Day The Crayons Quit" would be her favorite book this one turned out to be the winner of that title! She's an animal lover to begin with though. ;-) This book is excellent, humerous This book is excellent, humerous, delightful pictures, just a fun story for my wombat loving son. He loved it so much he read it to everyone through out the day and everyone in the family from 6-46, enjoyed it. This is on my personal "Best Book List" Best humorous book I've found about this Australian marsupial. (I love working with teens, and volunteer at a detention center.

Title: Mortimer's Cross Author: Joan Aiken Narrator: Judy Bennett Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 50 mins Language: English Release date: 04-01-10 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: Three zany adventures featuring Arabel Jones and her pet raven, Mortimer. In 'The Mystery of Mr Joness Disappearing Taxi', someone has been driving Mr Joness taxi, and books have been mysteriously vanishing from the local library. Can Arabel and Mortimer solve the mystery? 'Mortimers Cross' sees Arabels nasty great-aunt Olwen coming to stay, and subjecting Mortimer to a bath - much to his disgust. And in 'Mortimers Portrait on Glass' the Jones family take a trip to Ireland and visit a glass factory, with unfortunate results. Members Reviews: Three fun, sometimes dangerous, adventures with Arabel and Mortimer! Laugh and smile as you read about the antics of Arabel and Mortimer the raven who live in Rumbury Town, a suburb of London. Three short stories combined into one book. 1. The Mystery of Mr. Jones' Disappearing Taxi Since between Guy Fawkes (November 5th) and Christmas there have only been two days without rain. Everyone is grumpy except Mr. Jones who has had more business than usual with his taxi. For some strange reason though, his taxi seems to be using more gas. Why? Mortimer who likes to repeat the word 'nevermore' also likes to eat books but Arabel assures the librarian that Mortimer is not guilty of eating the 1,000 missing books even though he does like to have fun in the library! Rumbury Tower Heights is a 20 story building that is unused apart from bats. As this adventure continues we read of a kidnapping, floods and the discovery of the book thief. 2. Mortimer's Cross Poor Mrs. Jones has the flu. The only relative able to come help her is the dreaded Great Aunt Olwen! Being a clean freak, Aunt Olwen is horrified when she sees Mortimer and is determined to give him a bath! Oh my! She then ends up shipping the wrong box somewhere which actually contains a sulking Mortimer. Mortimer proceeds to get up to quite devastating mischief whilst catching some criminals unawares. 3. Mortimer's Portrait on Glass The Jones family is in Ireland having hired a horse drawn trailer (gypsy caravan) to go visit Great Aunt Rosie. The weather is cold and they end up rescuing a man from a bog who in turn takes them to his glass factory on the coast where there is a rather large iceberg coming into port! Love the descriptions in this book. A couple examples are: "snowing like a busted pillow" and "frozen stiff as a haddock"! If you are looking for a serious read, then this is not the book for you! At times it can be a little silly but we need to remember that it was written for children. Our kids absolutely loved it and laughed and laughed. The illustrations in our hardback edition are by Quentin Blake who just brings the characters to life. (He is the illustrator for most of the Roald Dahl books also.) SO great, light entertainment. Great reading for all ages What a wonderful book. Smart, gentle, extremely funny and totally inoffensive, this is the sort of book you can encourage just about any kid to read. It's formatted in chapters, but it really functions as a series of short stories, and its wonderful language makes it easily accessible to kids from preschool to middle-grades, and its sophisticated sense of humor makes it appealing even up into adulthood. A great book for anyone.

He wants to know about UFOs and horror movies and airships and ghosts and scientists, and how it feels to kiss a girl. And because he has leukaemia, he wants to know the facts about dying. Sam needs answers to the questions nobody will answer. Members Reviews: Fans of "The Fault in Our Stars" Will Enjoy With the movie and book "The Fault in Our Stars" released, the teens of nowadays are going through a phase of reading books that are set around the topic of "Cancer". When you get to my age though, you have read so many books about this topic, that often it can get kind of boring as you are reading the same thing over and over again. However, Sally Nicholls book "Ways to Live Forever" was amazing and was definitely not boring. The book is set around two main characters 11 year old Sam and 13 year old Felix . Both of the boys have Cancer and are dying, so they are home-schooled by Mrs Willis. One day Mrs Willis gives the boys an idea - to write a book . Sam gets really into it and starts to make a bucket list and a book filled with random questions about Cancer, Death and the actual Dying part and begins writing. Felix , the more outgoing one decides to help Sam tick off and complete his bucket list one by one. The book not only focuses on Sam and Felix but also their families reaction to the Cancer issue. Ways to Live Forever was a really good read and it was great to see Tween/Teen Male Protagonists for a change as well. I will warn you readers that be prepared for the ending with the mindset that it is a "cancer story". This book is really worth reading and fans of "The Fault in Our Stars" will enjoy. Very moving My sons 10th grade English class(English as a second language) was required to read this book, so I decided to read it too. In class the teacher was clever enough to skip a few chapters because some chapters can be real tear jerkers. Glad to read a story from a boy's perspective. Great Read I fundraise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training, and I saw that a friend was teaching this book in his children's literature course, so I decided to pick up a copy to read. While I was dismayed that the book wasn't written by a cancer patient, the book expertly captured a strenuous and challenging chapter of a family's life. Dealing with cancer isn't easy, but Ways to Live Forever somehow painted living with cancer in a positivistic light. The book would be a great read for any parent with a child undergoing cancer treatment, as it advocates helping the child live dreams. I am absolutely in love with this book I am absolutely in love with this book. I saw the movie first and as soon as I did, I knew I had to read the book. it's so sweet and well written and having seen the movie first, I can picture everyone's face and hear their voices and it's just perfect. It's an amazing story. Sam is Dying: I picked his book up on a whim, thought oh this looks interesting. I found myself having read it cover to cover in one sitting. This book is about a fictional 11yr old Sam. Sam has cancer, Although the doctors have tried it is incurable. For the most part everyone knows Sam is dying, and yet life goes on. He goes to a motified version of school, Sees his friend, does little but important stuff. But one day his teacher brought up a idea, to write about something.

Critic Reviews: "[Simon Russell Beale's] Big Bad Wolf is growlier than Marlon Brando, and his Jealous Queen more languorous than a casting-couch seductress. Inviting mimicry, too, are the snorts of the three little pigs and the lip-smacking 'yumyumyum' of the nasty but dim Troll." (Daily Telegraph) Members Reviews: Don't cook, you'll doze off A lively performance and great voice but the story is a little boring... Good for sending the kids to sleep! Fantastic What did you like most about Don't Cook Cinderella? Very entertaining story, narration is hilarious, so well done. Best kids audio book so far. What other book might you compare Don't Cook Cinderella to, and why? None, this is better than the rest, my 5 year old and I love this. What does Simon Russell Beale bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book? Everything, the narration is fabulous, I especially like his ability to narrate so well. If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be? This on film would give the Gruffalo a run for its money. Any additional comments? Best audio book so far, love the Gruffalo etc but dislike the voices on the narrating, I just can't bear to listen to them, this is excellent.

The plot is thrilling and characters realistic, yet interesting. I highly recommend listening to part two, Soul Stealer as it is narrated by the talented Steven Crossley, which you can download from Audible. I found part 2 even more entertaining, which I can attribute to a better storyline and Steven Crossley Boring as hell Boring as hell...but as an audio book...it'll get you by if you want to just finish a book report without reading. 6/10 Great job as an audiobook Loved the book. The audiobook was to listen to in traffic and didn't disappoint. Semi-qualified "Doctor" Martin Booth tries for a more sophisticated magical journey than Harry Potter, in "Doctor Illuminatus: The Alchemist's Son Part I." Taking a pretty typical fantasy good vs. evil story, Booth weaves in history and alchemy, but his handling of the plot is rather clumsy. Pip and her know-it-all twin Tim have just moved into a rambling English country estate, far from the pop-culture world they formerly had. Then scrabbling noises inside the wall are revealed to be something else entirely -- a boy called Sebastian emerges, claiming to be the son of the man who built the house. He's also the son of an alchemist, and he's hibernated for centuries. Sebastian reveals that he is not the only alchemist who has hibernated to the modern day -- an evil enemy named de Loudeac has also survived to the present day. Now de Loudeac is stalking the kids, and is building a homunculus -- a soulless automaton that will do whatever he wants. It's up to Pip, Tim and Sebastian to stop him. If anyone thought that the latest Harry Potter novels were oh-so-dark, then they will be scared witless by this dark fantasy. Booth takes a step into nastier territory, with severed limbs, undead hippies, and a cameo by Satan. And he takes some history (medieval and alchemical) to base the entire plot on. But Booth does have a slightly clumsy way of writing fantasy. Sebastian launches into long lectures every chapter or so, and Booth doesn't manage to make them interesting. And the homunculus is built up as a big threat, then gets toasted within a page of appearing. However, he has a pretty solid writing style, with plenty of details and creepiness. Pip and Tim are fairly good heroes -- a little passive for my taste, but their gradual adjustment to a world of alchemists and magic is well done. Pip in particular is a good lead character, with plenty of promise. Sebastian is not so likable. He's a rather annoying know-it-all, and he never once acts like a twelve-year-old. Martin Booth's "Doctor Illuminatus: The Alchemist's Son Part I" has some deep flaws, but it also has quite a bit of promise for Booth's future alchemy books. Worth checking out, for patient readers of dark books. Cute, fast read I am adult reading a book intented for children. I had just finished a very long book and needed something short and sweet. This book did just the trick.

The book by Peter Spier provides the springboard for the familiar song, about a fox who forages for food in the village to bring to his family back in the den. Young listeners will delight in this exceptional new recording of the popular Caldecott Honor Book. ©1961 Peter Spier; (P)2006 Live Oak Media Members Reviews: The fox went out on a chilly night This is a great book for kids. They love the story. And kind of a cool song if you can sing it. The Fox Went out.... Peter Spier never fails to satisfy an early childhood educator's plan to entice children with delightful , detailed illustrations and complete information, including musical score and chords. I've been an educator for over 35 years and am always looking for materials to enhance children's knowledge and curiosity about nature and music. I've used Spier's work, including "Rain", to great satisfaction. I've used the FOX book with slightly older children too, and they seem as drawn to it as the younger ones. My Son Loves This Song/Book My son loves this book and the tune that goes along with it! The story is a bit "old-school" but the pictures are beautiful and it is easy for the kids to read. It is really memorable to have a book that has a song that goes along with it. I highly recommend for beginner readers!! Oldie but a goodie. My mum used to sing ... Oldie but a goodie. My mum used to sing this to me (there's a tune you can sing the story to, with the music notation in the back of the book if you're unfamiliar with it), and now I get to sing it to my kids. A Classic Song Illustrated My daughter LOVES Nickel Creek's version of "The Fox Went Out.." and expressed a desire to learn it. She is pre-reading, and so the pictures in this book have proved to be a valuable tool for jogging her memory for the lyrics. Though the subject matter can seem a bit "gory" to modern parents ("Cut up the goose with a fork and a knife"), the illustrations (while suggestive) are not by any means inappropriate for even the youngest of children. Recommended for children (and adults!) who are familiar with the folk tune and would like a nice book to add to their collection.

The simple pleasures of life indicate a time gone by, before the advent of cellphones and Facebook, a time which almost stood still, a time where children could revel in the rain, make paper boats and race them down a drain, play marbles, and generally pass time. The once idyllic life almost seems too slow and bear and hence is fascinating to watch unfurl as we listen to the story.

Spellhorn (Essential Modern Classics) Audiobook by Berlie Doherty

Title: Spellhorn (Essential Modern Classics) Author: Berlie Doherty Narrator: Sarah Ovens Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 43 mins Language: English Release date: 06-25-15 Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited Genres: Kids, Fiction Publisher's Summary: A blind girl and a unicorn in a world where magic and reality merge together. Can Laura save the Wild Ones and take them to the safety of the Bright Wilderness? Laura is blind, but though she cannot see, she is an acutely perceptive child. As soon as she climbs onto the unicorn's back, she is hurled into a wild and magical world. Though a contemporary child living in a contemporary setting, Spellhorn and the Wild Ones see Laura as their leader, and they know that only through Laura can they reach the safety of the Bright Wilderness. But can the unicorns lead Laura back home to her own world? Powerful and moving, a delicious blend of fantasy and reality. Members Reviews: A Wonderful Classsic Fantasy Reason for Reading: This book is published under the Essential Modern Classics list. This is a list of books chosen by the publisher's UK house and is a collection of outstanding books for children. From looking at the titles I'd say the age range varies anywhere from 8 to 15. Four new titles are to be published in 2010 under the Essential Modern Classics list and I think the authors chosen present a unique collection for North American readers to discover. I intend to be keeping up-to-date with ESM as well as digging into their backlist. A wonderful fantasy written in the classic style comparable to ancient British folklore, though the author has created her own world from scratch. As part of the Essential Modern Classics series the book starts with an informative paragraph bio. of the author followed by a short essay entitled "Why You'll Love This Book" written by a famous author, in this case Helen Dunmore. Then a quick blurb on just who is Helen Dunmore. This publisher's series also sometimes ends with extra material at the back of the book called "More Than A Story". This book contains that section and is extremely interesting, relevant and a bonus to the book. First there is a long "Author's Note" in which the author describes how she wrote this book with the input of 4 blind children. Then there is a section on the history of the myths of unicorns around the world and finally a Q & A section with Doherty about the book including the question to why she chose the ending she did. Laura is a blind girl who smells and feels a presence under her bedroom window. She sneaks out at night and finds a unicorn. She climbs upon him and the Wild Ones appear and carry her off into the night. She is told a tale as she is taken to their magical land that Spellhorn has chosen her to be their new Mighty High and only she can truly be their new leader, if she refuses to come Spellhorn will stay with her and the Wild Ones will not be able to return to their home world called the Wilderness. Laura is torn between leaving her family between and the plight of these peoples but when her sight comes back to her, the choice becomes easier. A beautiful little book! For me the mundane beginning, while well written, lasted a little too long making me wonder why this book was so "essential" but once the Wild Ones enter the scene it reaches a different level. Laura is a girl with many hurdles and decisions to make starting with her own blindness which gradually grew upon her in her toddlerhood. The journey to the Wilderness is full of decisions for her as the path is not easy and she must put her trust in Spellhorn while struggling with her feelings of turning around and going back home.
