Very interesting & Scarey Story, also was a Great episode of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour starring Leslie Nielsen! A good short story, if not a little confusing I've been thinking about getting the story for a while. It's simple enough, a father and his son visit a mysterious magic shop. The visit begins in the standard fashion, but it evolves into a series of strange events that continues to concern the father. The child seems to enjoy himself thoroughly. It's a wholesome story, but my concern comes with some of the grammar and language. Some of it was just confusing. I use the dictionary on a few words and found no entry (A great feature of the Kindle app), and in a few places i tripped upon grammar that just seemed out of whack. All in all - a good short read. Very descriptive. Successfully Magical! Excellent, but it needs footnotes related to when it was written in the early 20th century to put its various references into better context. The illustrations were successfully magical but sometimes didn't follow the text. The magician seems based on Alfred Hitchcock's TV episode with the clerk looking like David Opatoshu, who's probably best remembered for hos role on Star Trek as Anan 7 in "a Taste of Armageddon. Enjoy! Loved it! Gip and his father wander into a London magic shop for a look around. The proprietor playfully shows off his magic skills for the boy. At a point, the magic starts to get a little too genuine. And that is when the story starts to get a bit creepy. Loved it! 5 STARS

We get to know several characters besides Holmes and Watson. Doyle describes Dartmoor and the Grimpen Mire with tantalizing details. If you are not familiar with any of the movies, radio or TV adaptations, you have a rare treat in store. But even if you have been a longtime fan of Sherlock Holmes it is worth another read. Absolutely Classic Story The classic Holmes story. It can be a bit wordy at times but the reasoning behind that was to involve the reader in the general moodiness and atmosphere of the story. This isn't THE Holmes story to read if you are just becoming acquainted with Holmes, but it is very worthwhile reading once you've been introduced to him via some of the short stories or perhaps even A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four. Old school detective story If you want to start with Holmes, start here. Many old school stories don't hold up well, this does. For cultural literacy reasons alone it's worth the time (it's a quick read) but it's also a good story. Call it up on the Kindle for a buck and enjoy the bus ride. One of the best It was fun to have a Holmes novel with Watson taking center stage. This is a classic. Doyle makes you picture and actually feel the moor. Do yourself a favor and read this one. (One star is taken off for the incredible amount of typos.) Sherlock Holmes rocks Sherlock Holmes is the best. Read every story over and over again. Love this one because it proves that answers don't have to be fanciful to be right.

Possible suspects begin to pile up quickly after Holmes and Watson arrive at the Paris opera house. Prior to her disappearance, the missing girl had worked her way into the lead role of Romeo and Juliet through mysterious circumstances, providing one possible motive for her disappearance. It was also rumored she had begun a relationship with an Opera Ghost, whoâd magically improved her singing talents. Although I did download it on a promo day and therefore got it for free, I would have gladly paid for it in the end. This is a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery. I found the story really engaging. The characters were well-developed. I enjoyed the writerâs style as well and Iâm looking forward to reading her other Sherlock Holmes stories.

No fictional character is more renowned for his powers of thought and observation than Sherlock Holmes. Members Reviews: awful What a terrible short story. Poor Holmes, the creation of one of the most talented authors, is dragged to the filth of mercenary opportunists. Very enjoyable This is the third Sherlock Holmes short story I have read by Ms. Cartawick, each as different and exciting as the one before. In this particular installment, the two erstwhile companions Holmes and Watson find themselves the witnesses of an unfortunate accident, an incident too perilous to be written off as mere bad luck. Working against short time and with an entire carnival cast of suspects, the two must make determine what happened before the crowd disperses and the culprit escapes forever. This work was a rare treat in that the narrator was Holmes, not the usual Watson. It gave a wonderful insight into the titular character as well as allowing the reader to see a more at-ease view of Watson. A quick and easy read, worthy of inclusion in the canon. A new favourite author I just discovered this author and am so glad I did. A friend recommended her work to me and now I'm addicted! As an amateur writer myself I can see the mastery of her craft and the result is an enjoyable and just downright fun read. The story and characters are well constructed which makes the book literally 'un-put-downable'. I'm so pleased to have found a new author who deserves to be followed closely.

And they're fun to read aloud These are entertaining stories where everything gets mixed up and then all turns out right in the end. Very clever, very funny. And they're fun to read aloud. Collection of stories by Wodehouse This is a collection of stories (including a mystery) by Wodehouse. Unfortunately, this is not comparable to some of his best stuff like the the Jeeves & Wooster series. I am however giving it 3 stars because it is a Wodehouse book and even his not so great writing is better than most other writers. Porr Kindle version The book itself is very good but the Kindle version seems to be a bad OCR version that was never proofed. Numerous spelling errors, combined words, lack of punctuation make it difficult to read at times. Every page contains at least 4-8 errors. A solid read A mix of short stores, some of this has aged better than others, but two Wooster and Jeeves stories and a very odd murder. Death at the Excelsior Contains Wodehouse's only mystery (in addition to other stories). Not quite vintage Wodehouse but certainly funny and well worth reading. It is not in the same class as the Jeeves or Blandings stories but close. I only gave it 4 stars simply because I compared to his best works. A 2 star Wodehouse book is better than a 4 star with most other writers.

It was a short story that was published in a newspaper and one of the few times Holmes is outwitted, this time by a woman. What sparked my interest was book discovered in a local bookstore titled Chapel Noir: An Irene Adler Mystery by Carole Nelson Douglas, the fourth book in the series. It's the continuation of Irene Adler after Scandal in Bohemia. I already ordered the first book, Good Morning Irene from Amazon. It will be a summer read. As to Mr. Holmes! I plan to read more and join the only Holmes Society on the West Coast in my neck of the Gold Country. Fast Read After watching the series Sherlock from BBC I decided I was going to go back and read the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books. The Sherlock episode was entitled A Scandal in Belgravia versus Bohemia. They were very faithful to the book despite it being modernized. I read this book in under 2 hours it was that good. I will read his others as I have the time. I would recommend this book for an insight into Sherlock himself. a good read I had seen the TV version which was very interesting with a confusing plot.so I wanted the book version to read. And it was not disappointing but I am a Sherlock Holmes nut. Conan Doyle never disappoints This brief classic tale has become iconic. It is much quoted in spin off stories written by others. Indeed, Irene Adler is a clever woman! Three Stars FUN READING

Normally, I dislike abridgements, but I couldn't resist hearing Mr. Lee reading Dracula, and you shouldn't resist, either. The abridgement is well-done...I read the book back in high school and, as far as I can tell, nothing significant is missing. Christopher Lee's reading is superlative for this work..his voice was made for Gothic horror. "Dracula" is vampirism like Grandmother used to make: No abstinent vampires who resist a young girl's charms for her own protection. No teenager angst. Nobody compares the Count to Adonis or comments on his wavy hair. Nobody sparkles. Count Dracula is eerily charming but quite malevolent, the evil undead who has no qualms about draining the lifeblood from the innocents around him. His minions include fellow vampires and a lunatic asylum inmate. The story is told from the viewpoint of his pursuers, and to some extent, his victims. As good as "Dracula" is, Christopher Lee's narration enhances the story. Lee is a great actor telling a powerful story in a cross between epic narrative and a campfire ghost story. Next Hallowe'en, pop this onto your iPod and enjoy! Fantastic Really can't express how great this version is. First off, it's Christopher Lee reading Dracula!!! But what's even better is, beyond that movie geek attraction, he does a fantastic job reading this!!! Almost more like he's acting it out, and playing all the character!! I had to remind myself that it was the same man doing all these voices. Most of it is, of course, read in the deep commanding baritone you know from the movies, but he switches to the breathless voice of the dying Lucy, the slight German accented Van Helsing to the Texas drawl of Quincy Morris. I wish more voice talent would give their audience this much effort and show this much respect to the original text. It is abridged, not too bad, haven't noticed anything left out or condensed that's a distraction. Can't speak highly enough of this version.

I have never bought an audio book of his where I didn't have to fight the urge to erase it, and several times I have. But I love Conrad so much I took the chance I could enjoy it in spite of his affected, nasal, irritating style. Alas, even Conrad can't survive such treatment. Poor choice of reader The voice used to read the words of Joseph Conrad is totally inappropriate. It is an American voice, but this could have been acceptable if some effort had een made to select a good voice. This one is thin, nasal and very irritating. Any additional comments? i highly recommend this reader. he is quite different from my usual favorites -- he does not for example do dialog particularly well -- and at first i didn't like his style. but midway into the first story, i became fascinated with it. usually, a good reader creates something which is both himself or herself and the author's work. Kandinsky did not do that, but instead made me focus on the work itself, on Conrad's words. i felt at times as if while reading the stories, he was at the same time yelling, "look at them, the words, the text! how magnificent!" and making me see them in my mind's eye almost as if for the first time.

Members Reviews: Classic Dickens These stories were a thoroughly enjoyable listen. The narrator's voice and inflection worked well for the stories. While she might have been a trifle slower, one soon got used to it all and it did not detract from the enjoyment. Slow down ! I found this collection quite difficult to get into, as the narrator reads too quickly. However, by the third story, I was getting used to the pace, and started enjoying her funny accents and the way she seemed to relish what she was reading. My iPod allows me to slow the narration down but unfortunately this resulted in some odd background noise. So, if you don't mind fast narration, and stories that, so far, aren't really that scary, you'll like this.

Night of the Demon This is the story that the film "Night of the Demon" is based upon. It was interesting to finally read it. One of the great voices in horror First, about M.R. James: He is excellent! He is one of the best, most underappreciated voices in horror. Lovecraft admired him. His stories, though old, are quite scary. Also, they are very well written. As Chabon points out in his intro, Poe and Lovecraft weren't the best literary stylists. Most people cite "Oh, Whistle..." as James's best story, but I think I'll vote for "Count Magnus." Certainly all of them are good. More than that, they are REQUIRED reading for anyone who wants to have a basic understanding of horror literature. It is also a hell of a good read. Second, this edition: I was greatful to a previous reviewer for explaining the asterisks. There are asterisks without footnotes all over this book, as well as other Oxford University Press books (The Monk). Now we know that these are residue from a previous edition that HAD footnotes. Perhaps you might want to get that version. However, I take great issue with the disparaging of Michael Chabon's essay on M.R. James. If you don't get the edition with his introduction, I recommend going to the bookstore and reading through it anyway. His comments are very illuminating on James and ghost stories in general. Casting the Runes (Fantasy and Horror Classics) M. R. James An ancestor to ghost-story books and it has stood the test of time well. A good antidote to American-dominated ghost books. Worth reading. Night of the Demon Movie Novel Not really like the 1950's era movie, "Night of the Demon" but taken alone this novel is suspenseful leaving the reader waiting to turn the next page.

Members Reviews: Excellent Pre-Dracula Vampire Story I will say that though the language within this book was extremely difficult having been written in the second decade of the 19th century, I found it a very engaging and interesting book. I think the thing that held my interest most is that this is a book about a female vampire who has lesbian tendencies, though in the Victorian era this would have been viewed as outrageous, that was published almost 30 years prior to Bram Stoker's Dracula. And to be perfectly honest, I really think that Bram Stoker paralleled Dracula in many ways to Carmilla. Anyone interested in reading classic horror should give this book a try. It was not long, probably considered a short story, however it is very engaging because you want to understand the hows and whys of Carmilla. To be honest, I almost wish the writer had written more, as it would have been very interesting to gage into Carmilla's story as a vampire. The book, however, is written from Laura's point of view about her experiences with Carmilla, who actually had three names: Carmilla, Mircalla, and another name I can not remember. All in all, it was a very good read... one that has probably been lost in history. I wish modern vamps would take a page from Carmilla The first time I read this story, I had no idea what it was about. It was in an old library book whose cover had mostly faded away, along with any description of the stories and their contents. I thought it was a sweet romance story, pleasantly "liberal" for its time. Then the recognizable signs began. If you've read other reviews, you probably know what this story is about. More than any other vampire story I've read, this truly shows how creepy the whole concept of the vampire can be. It's like the old story of the fox and the scorpion crossing the river. Scorpion wants to get across, Fox offers to let Scorpion ride on his back. Scorpion knows he'll be safe, because he knows that Fox would never eat him for fear of his poisonous tail. Halfway across the river, Fox tosses his head back to eat Scorpion. "What are you doing?!" Scorpion cried. "If you eat me, we'll BOTH die!" "I know," Fox replies. "But I must eat you. It's in my nature." I think Carmilla truly did love Laura, and Laura likely loved her back. Carmilla isn't cruel or evil or manipulative, she isn't tortured over the fact that she wants to kill humans.

His most famous work is The Beast with Five Fingers, which is universally recognised as a masterpiece and one of the most iconic horror stories ever written. Born into a wealthy Quaker family in Yorkshire, he went to Balliol College, Oxford, and took a degree in medicine at Leeds. Ill health dogged him, however, and he devoted much of his recuperation to writing short stories. The release of the film The Beast with Five Fingers (1946), directed by Robert Florey and starring Peter Lorre, inspired by his most famous short story, caused a resurgence of interest in Harvey's work. Members Reviews: Good book but the print is small. is also the name of the lead-off short story. This reviewer believes that the book was worth buying. I have enjoyed most of the stories, a few of which I have come across in other such anthologies. I recommend the book with this caveat: The print is small and therefore difficult for some (self-included) to read. Were it any smaller I would have needed a magnifying glass. But I recently bought/ received another similar book that has print even smaller. And indeed I have (and used) a good magnifier Master of Strange Stories William Fryer Harvey's short stories are dark, ambivalent, murderous & sometimes slyly humorous. In this regard, he pre-dates Robert Aickman. Like some of Aickman's best tales - "Trains" & "Bind your hair" spring to mind - quite a few of Harvey's best tales are based around wanderings and the strange encounters that ensue. In "The Tool" a man takes a walking tour and somehow loses a day, a day in which a heinous crime has been committed; perhaps by the narrator? In "The Hearthside Fire", another murder is committed at midnight in an isolated public house on the moors & the perpetrator finds no rest ; in "August heat", a painter leaves his garret, goes for a stroll and is astonished to meet the murderously visaged person he has just painted an hour before. It's a dangerous business stepping beyond your doorstep, as Bilbo Baggins once observed. There is also the title story, which is one of the slickest black comedies since "Arsenic & old lace"; the "Follower" & "Miss Avenal", which are respectively a tale of elliptic horror a la Conrad & a tale of psychic vampirism. All of these tales were written in the Twenties & Thirties. The prose is clear, and always in the service of telling a lean story. I've read and re-read these stories many times with growing pleasure & appreciation. A hidden gem I've read too many ghost/horror stories to count. I discovered Mr. Harvey in a collection of short stories. The story I read was so delightfully creepy, I had to google him! I immediately went to Amazon to order one of his collection and I have been pleasantly delighted with his talent for writing good and creepy stories.

Ladlaw is in the grips of a terrible possession... and Sybil is at her wits end. Ladlaw's split personality is so bizarre that it is sometimes hard to grasp who has the upper hand. Members Reviews: Sacred and Profane John Buchan is far from forgotten these days, thanks to his widely read and adapted Richard Hannay yarns that earned him a status of one of the fathers of modern thrillers. What is forgotten, however, is that he produced fair amount of weird fiction. His strange stories are rarely reprinted, and barely read. That is a shame, as they are far from your generic supernatural yarns that were commonly produced in that period. These are subtle, oft psychologically charged, tales, whose subject range from unusual takes on more common tropes, to some pretty original tales that, in their themes and delivery, anticipated some famous 20th century's weird stories. Longest story in this collection, "No-Man's Land", anticipates Robert E. Howard's treatment of the little people folklore as opposed to Machen's more ethereal one (tho, it would've made for more attractive weird tale if the second half of it was cut off), whereas "Space" warrants comparison to HPL's "Witch-house" and "From beyond" - through his work, brilliant mathematician regains the level of perception that modern men lost, one that lets him see "that at which dogs bark at night"... only, he too gets noticed by... other things. "The Grove of Astharoth", "The Green Wildebeest" and "The Wind in the Portico" deal with modern man's encounter with ancient survivals, always with tragic results. "The Wind...", in particular, is great example of that somewhat dubious "folk horror" sub-genre that is increasingly popular nowadays. Any of these three tales would certainly satisfy any fan of Blackwood or Sarban. "The Watcher by the Treshold", "Tendebant Manus" and "Fullcurcle" present most unusual hauntings. "The Watcher" and "Tendebant Manus" deal with hauntings/possession, former with an excellent gothic mood and a good dash of that interest in old survivals that I mentioned in relation to previous three stories, latter with a more psychological focus and a great dose of ambiguity as to actual presence of anything overtly supernatural.

Members Reviews: An action-packed historical novel This is a well paced and fast-moving historical novel set during the anti-popery riots in London in 1780. Although not as grippingly exciting as Dicken's other historical novel, A Tale Of Two Cities, there is plenty of drama here to sustain the reader's interest. The fictional characters are well woven into the historical setting, and the portrayal of these characters gives the book some of its best comic moments, from the suave Edward Chester, to the vengeful Simon Tappertit, to the spiteful Miss Miggs, to the devious hangman, Dennis. The hero of the book is Gabriel Varden, whom Dickens repeatedly describes, rather clumsily, as "the honest locksmith". Varden has to suffer constant friction in his own household between himself, his wife, his apprentice and his maid, and this agitation reflects the agitation of the masses in the streets. One of the best features of the book is the way it successfully carries a number of plot lines. The main one of these concerns a murder committed many years previously for which no-one has been convicted. There are several other sub-plots such as the tension between the Catholic Haredale and the Protestant Chester, Joe Willet's love for Varden's daughter, the comical scheming of the apprentice locksmith against his master and the presence of a shadowy stranger who pursues Barnaby Rudge's mother. Some elements of the plot fizzle out a bit too easily towards the end, such as the attempt to kidnap Haredale's daughter, but the overall effect of the book is very satisfying. This is one of Dicken's least remembered novels, but I think it is well worth reading and an excellent introduction to his work. Dickens' Other Historical Novel When one says "Charles Dickens" and "historical novel" in the same sentence, the immediate impression is of the French Revolution adventure "A Tale of Two Cities". But Dickens wrote another historical novel 18 years before, in 1841, the complex and colorful "Barnaby Rudge", set during London's anti-Papal riots of June 1780, when there was a reaction against the Catholic influence in Parliament. Populated by a large cast and activated by a plot of intrigue and danger, it is one of the best of Dickens in his early period. In fact, it is perhaps Dickens' most under-rated work. As usual with Dickens, the characters find themselves in a labyrinth of relationships. Sir John Chester is an impoverished habitué who tells his handsome son he expects the young man to insure the family fortune in the time-honored tradition of decadent nobility: by marrying money. "With regard to our circumstances, Ned, you may set your mind at rest upon that score. They are desperate." His son is appalled, the more so as he is in love with Emma, the daughter of a country gentleman, Geoffrey Haredale, Sir John's moral opposite.

Anyone interested in Hardy should read it, but the fact that it is in so many collections - e.g., The Withered Arm and Other Stories - makes it hard to justify a standalone, especially as some collections cost little or no more than this. This may even be Hardy's most superbly plotted and masterfully executed tale of all; the mysterious and foreboding threads coalesce in a dark, seemingly inevitable ending exemplifying Hardy's cruel fate twists. It does not take on grand concerns to the extent most of his best work does but is in many ways one of his bleakest stories; its vision of humanity headed toward a tragic end with little or no control over events is unforgettable. Hardy's best novels are replete with such drama, but no prior short story conveyed it so fully or well. "The Withered" is also an appropriate close for the book, being in many ways the culmination of Hardy's fiction to that point. It is one of his few works to have central scenes in both Casterbridge - the largest town in Wessex - and the surrounding countryside, while the cast of milkmaids, hanging judges, wronged women, and nervous new wives seems to have stepped out of a myriad Hardy stories. Not least interestingly, though much of Hardy's work is steeped in rural Southwest England folklore, this is virtually his only fiction with a strong supernatural element. His editor and friend Leslie Stephen criticized the element's ambiguity, saying he was unsure whether to believe or not, but this was surely Hardy's point; he again lets us judge. Far more important in any case are the dark forces at the story's heart - forces that soon dominated the little fiction he had left to write. Buying this in a collection gives one the chance to see it in other works along with this excellent one.

Members Reviews: Stoker's first published story This is beautifully written and beautifully performed. It sounds more like poetry then a story. The story is not really scary, but is intense with feeling. It is written in three parts from the perspective of three different people. The first part is very intense with sentences like "He gazed with bursting eye balls.". The ending is a surprise. The narrator is excellent.

The book is a hilarious parody and certainly the most lighthearted of Austen's novels, yet it still manages to be an unsentimental commentary on love and marriage. Austen fans will enjoy the decidedly satirical twist this book takes, a twist that only Austen's genius could pull off. Members Reviews: Flawed but Good Loved the book but...for audio perfectionists this may not be for you. The copyright says 1980 and the sound has some background noise common to recordings in those days. And....while I don't agree with the reviewer who "shouted" about it. ( all caps is considered shouting ) it does have a slightly hollow sound. However, in spite of the less-than-perfect sound quality, we ( my wife and I ) loved it! For one thing we I prefer American readers because for us, as Americans, British accents tend to get in the way of understanding. And..most importantly...the reader was very good...seeming to "read with a smile." Over the years we have heard two other recordings of this book and the readers were just so very serious. This was Jane Austen's most light-hearted book and this readers voice matched the text perfectly. So our advice...listen to the sample first. If you don't mind the "old days" audio and you are an Austen fan, you'll love this reading. terrible quality narration The narrator's voice is good the the quality is terrible. I couldn't finish it. Sounds like she is in an echo chamber - more than you can take so I can't review whole book for you because... I couldn't take it. Poor Recording Quality This is my favorite Jane Austen novel. The reader does an acceptable job reading the work, but I found the poor recording quality and low volume level to greatly take away from my enjoyment of the piece. I HEAR YA I GOT THROUGH THE FIRST COUPLE OF SENTENCES ON THIS BOOK. THE SOUND SYSTEM OR STUDIO SOUNDS LIKE IT IS IN THE BASEMENT OF A SUBWAY. JUST TERRIBLE. I AM SORRY I SPENT THE MONEY ON THIS ONE.

"Blow Up with the Brig" is a short story written in 1859, just a year before he wrote his famous novel The Woman in White. © and (P) Fantom Films Members Reviews: Quirky Story, Catchy Title, Good Narrator Phil Reynolds is a solid narrator who is just right for this little story with its catchy title, which I didn't understand at first. I knew it was going to be quirky because Collins is quirky. One never knows what comes next. It doesn't take long to figure out the narrator survives. How else is he able to tell us what happened? Even then, Collins manages to create suspense without music or moving pictures. Was it Yogi Bera who said he liked the book better because the pictures were better? Wilkie Collins is one of my pet exceptions to my general reading/listening habits. I don't know how he wormed his way into my required list but there he is right next to Trollope, Austen, the Brontes, Scott, von Arnim and a long list of notables. Maybe it was the title of the book he wrote immediately after this story which did the trick: "The Lady in White". There is romance in that title. Romance. I'm very often amused at some comments made about my long dead authors, my authors. I have seen words like hackneyed, overused device, worn-out, boring and so forth applied to Trollope, Austen, Collins and others. These folks authored the trite phrases, themes and situations which have been copied and adapted thousands of times since. Austen's Sense and Sensibility was akin to Captain James T. Kirk boldly going where no woman or man had gone before. It was the first of its kind ever. Dittos for Wilkie Collins style of storytelling. No one, anywhere, ever, had done anything quite this way before. Austen, Trollope, Collins and many others struck out across a pathless wilderness leaving a trail for others to carry in packs of trites, hackneyes, and worn-outs. If I am to be bored, then let me be bored by the original rather than the tenth generation re-write of a copy.

Well written and thought provoking The Moon and Sixpence was written as a sort of biographical fiction on the life of the painter Paul Gauguin. Gauguin was called Strickland in the book, and was cast as a disillusioned former stockbroker and family man. The narrator becomes obsessed with following his life and movements, due to Strickland's extraordinarily misanthropic and apathetic view of western society. The narrator struggled to grasp Strickland's motivations. It seemed his best explanation was that Strickland was possessed by a drive to find a sort of terrible primeval beauty in man and the world around him. Yet Strickland's genus as a painter was eventually recognized, contrasting greatly with the man himself. The narrator used Strickland as a sort of muse, to reflect upon the human condition. This was a book that started slow, but was hard to put down. Definitely worth the read. Four Stars Like it and made me get into life of W. Somerset Maugham...enjoyed the book immensely. Strange Genius Fascinating reading about a very talented painter who led a tortured life, emotionally and physically. I was unaware of his painful story. the alchemy of writing I have put this, not new, but still beautiful book, on the reading list for a class I am teaching, Into The Heart of Art. This book stirred a lot of controversy when it was first published, because it's a brazen and obvious portrayal of the life of the well known artist, Gauguin, borrowing so unmistakeably from his life and yet, not at all Gauguin, because the artist portrayed has a very same but different life. The beautiful old copy of this book, which I got from Amazon, has lovely prints of Gauguin's paintings within, and if you can get it, I heartily recommend this particular edition! Somerset Maugham is a wonderful writer. The book itself makes us all ponder the nature of the creative spirit that pushes a person to the extremes of giving up so much that is "comfortable" to pursue his or her art. The Gauguin portrayed in this book is not a sympathetic character, and yet, he is pursued by his Muse. There are beautiful, memorable quotes about art in this book. Purchase it. Find them. Enjoy!

Members Reviews: The second volume not Cronins best This audiobook covers two very different books. The first volume is more typical of what youd expect if youd watched the old BBC series (b&w!). There are witty observations on Scottish life, though based more in the industrial city of Levenford (Dumbarton) than in the heathery hills of Tannochbrae. Finlay doesnt have a first name - except Doctor - Cameron isnt nearly as beneficent as his TV persona; hes rather lazy and scheming, hypochondriacal and he shows a stereotypical attitude to sd. Janet is younger and less contented with her lot as skivvy to Dr Cameron, and Finlay really is hopeless when it comes to women- luckily hes quicker on the uptake where medicine is concerned! Some of his (fairly) well intentioned behaviour would now have him investigated by the GMC! The second part is a continuing story of one of Finlays disastrous relationships with women. We learn that the young doctor is a Catholic (TV omitted this, sectarianism having been a significant blot on Scottish life in the era of the stories and continuing when the series was made. I dont think viewers furth of Scotland would have understood anyway.) Its harmless easy listening though. I didnt like the narrator at first but he grew on me.

I read this bed-time story to my three-year-old kid, who is generally a very picky eater, and it got her to start eating mushrooms. Not scary at all. I bought this book because it was mentioned in another thriller I was reading and was noted to be very "scary". First, this book is barely a pamphlet in size and I guess what people thought was "scary" 100 years ago (when it was written) is not the same as what is "scary" today. It might have made a good story for The Twilight Zone in the 1960's. WHH is an old fashioned writer, focusing on the ... WHH is an old fashioned writer, focusing on the intellectuals of his day, and spending most of his time writing stories with a touch of macabre or supernatural content. If you liked more rambling Human-consuming fungal growths on a deserted island begin taking over a marooned sailor and his wife. And the fungus looks tasty. That's about it. It's a body horror tale, but the tempo isn't quite suited to modern audiences. If you liked more rambling, old-fashioned pieces, this would be fine, but I need something tighter. This story is in the public domain, so you can find it free from many sources. I listened to the audio production from Tales to Terrify.

Sadly the narrators tone and inflection makes this a difficult listen and distracts from the story- I may have scored the story higher if I had been able to concentrate on it! Would you be willing to try another one of Cathy Dobsons performances? No, sorry. Not a great listening experience I was looking forward to listening to this story but unfortunately the voice of the narrator was so irritating that I only listened for 10 minutes which was a shame. I couldn't obviously rate the story accurately as I only heard the first ten minutes.

When he fails in that duty, disaster ensues nationaally, internationally, and personally. Wells seems to say that those with great abilities lie under obligation to use them. In failing to use them, one will suffer. In failing to apply the greatest of abilities, the greatest suffering will follow. Three Stars A good read Five Stars Love it Disappointed I have enjoyed Mr Wells' work in the past, but I found his skills lacking in the realm of the short story. Many of the endings were essentially nonexistent, about as satisfying as "and then he woke up." Two Stars Many of these short stories seems underdeveloped and were very odd.

And so far I find the story to be very odd too. I wish I could get my .99 cents back. Abridged and therefor useless for me I did not realize that this is an ABRIDGED adaptation rather the entire novel when I ordered it. My bad, but really why would anyone want to skip so much of Lawrence's novel? The woman reading is just fine, but it's impossible to follow along with the book, and I finally gave up when I realized I had to stop the recording and read the book. Good A story as old as time. I enjoyed it at would recommend it to other readers who enjoy classic love stories. Excellent inexpensive version for Kindle I'm not reviewing Lady Chatterley's Lover - it's a classic and has been reviewed by those who are far more literary and articulate than I am. I'm primarily reading it because it is a classic yet was banned for so many years. What I'm reviewing is this particular Kindle edition: For only .99, I was a little apprehensive regarding what I would get for my money. I've seen other free/inexpensive e-books that were full of typos and were very difficult to read. I haven't gotten very far into this book. (What page am I on? I don't know! But this is because I'm reading it on an iPod using the Kindle app, not on an actual Kindle.) But so far it is typo-free. I don't know how I got so lucky to pick this particular version! It was a short story that was published in a newspaper and one of the few times Holmes is outwitted, this time by a woman. What sparked my interest was book discovered in a local bookstore titled Chapel Noir: An Irene Adler Mystery by Carole Nelson Douglas, the fourth book in the series. It's the continuation of Irene Adler after Scandal in Bohemia. I already ordered the first book, Good Morning Irene from Amazon. It will be a summer read. As to Mr. Holmes! I plan to read more and join the only Holmes Society on the West Coast in my neck of the Gold Country. Fast Read After watching the series Sherlock from BBC I decided I was going to go back and read the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books. The Sherlock episode was entitled A Scandal in Belgravia versus Bohemia. They were very faithful to the book despite it being modernized. I read this book in under 2 hours it was that good. I will read his others as I have the time. I would recommend this book for an insight into Sherlock himself. a good read I had seen the TV version which was very interesting with a confusing plot.so I wanted the book version to read. And it was not disappointing but I am a Sherlock Holmes nut. Conan Doyle never disappoints This brief classic tale has become iconic. It is much quoted in spin off stories written by others. Indeed, Irene Adler is a clever woman! Three Stars FUN READING

I don't recommend this practice, because after a few you realize that it's all a blur! And now I have trouble distinguishing this title from the rest. But I can say that they are all clever, witty and outdated in a fun way (learn something about "olden" times - and that people and their cares have been the same for centuries). As the author ages his circumstances change (marriage, kids, etc.), so it would have helped to know their chronological order and follow it before I started the endeavor. It's been a few months (and dozens of books) since I read this, and I don't remember the premise - which may be all you need to know as a recommendation on whether or not to read it :). Not as hilarious as Jerome's best know works Amusing situation comedy, set in post Victorian England. Not as hilarious as Jerome's best know works, but an enjoable read. Doyle Story with A Mysterious Woman" I have always enjoyed A. C. Doyle, especially his creation of Sherlock Holmes as well as others. When I saw "The Parasite" on Amazon and it was a "free e-book," I download it. Although not Holmes or other writings I was familiar with, I enjoyed it, although I had a hard time getting into it at first. Later in his life, Doyle did become fascinated with spiritualism and the paranormal, even befriending Houdini in his later years. The two of them became good friends, despite their opposing views on the supernatural. Houdini was delighted to learn that there was at least one intelligent person who believed in Spiritualism, and he found that man in his friend Conan Doyle. "The Parasite" is a short story and nice quick read. The protagonist is Austin Gilroy, a physiologist, who is a realist and believes that the paranormal is nonsense. That is until he meets a mysterious woman who mesmerizes people; he is not only hypnotized by this woman, but he slowly becomes completely obsessed with her. Gilroy says: "This woman, by her own explanation, can dominate my nervous organism. She can project herself into my body and take command of it. She has a parasite soul; yes, she is a parasite, a monstrous parasite. She creeps into my frame as the hermit crab does into the whelk's shell. I am powerless! What can I do?" If you like Doyle in general, then you may like this book. The price was right for my Kindle! I must warn the reader that these tales are not particularly horrifying or bloodthirsty, so if you are used to Stephen King or even scarier authors this book may be a disappointment to you.

The text is really messed up, though. Most of it is missing. Someone needs to go in and correct it. If you look up this story on Wikipedia, you can find a link to read it online. I am a fan of the author though and wanted to have a copy. Excellent ghost story I read Lot No. 249 many years ago in a collection of ghost stories and I am happy to have a copy of this great story on my Kindle. This story may have been a basis for the original movie with B. Karloff. Anyone who enjoys ghost stories and mysteries with be happy to have this story in their collection. Not really worth it My review has nothing to do with the story presented here. Lot No. 249 is wonderful. However it isn't worth the price here, low though it is, since this story can be had for free on this very site. Just search for the author in the kindle store, and this book is included in one of the collections there, which is free. terrific story This one is celebrated as one of Doyle's best, and I agree: it's well-written with good characters and a suspenseful pace. It's about some Oxford students and an Egyptian mummy. I will say no more.

Members Reviews: Great imaginative stories from a pioneer Here is a group of imaginative fiction stories from the early 1900s, a very different era in the fiction world. There are a pair of stories about large sailing ships being attacked by huge, hideous sea creatures. On a ship where the crew is starting to talk back to the drunken captain, the second mate is murdered from behind, but there is no one nearby. The crew, all of which are accounted for, can't help but think that there is a supernatural explanation. There is a daring mid-ocean rescue of a young woman who is the only person still alive on a derelict ship. The complication is that the ship is also home to thousands of very hungry rats, who are not particular about what, or who, they eat. There is also a mystery story about a pair of dead bodies that are found at the top of a rural water tower. Hodgson was one of the pioneers of the entire imaginative literature field. He did it all; he wrote mysteries, horror, fantasy and adventure tales. This book is a really good example. If a copy can be found, it will certainly keep the reader entertained.
