Title: The Sphinx without a Secret Author: Oscar Wilde Narrator: Anthony Donovan Format: Unabridged Length: 13 mins Language: English Release date: 12-02-13 Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: This is a story from the Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories collection. A palmist's prediction leads to murder; an enigmatic woman's lifestyle is a mystery to be solved; a ghost tries to frighten the new tenants of his home; a man has discovered the dedicatee of Shakespeare's Sonnets; a millionaire wants to be painted as a pauper. Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Other Stories is a collection of fascinating short stories that are subversive as well as entertaining. Also included in this audiobook is 'The Birthday of the Infanta from A House of Pomegranates', in which an ugly dwarf loves a beautiful princess. How will his feelings fare in a cruel society? Editorial Reviews: Two old friends meet. One suggests, "women are meant to be loved, not to be understood". The other, sadly whispers, "I cannot love what I cannot trust", and shares his concern on learning a mysterious, beautiful womans secret just before she passes on, which is also shortly before they were scheduled to marry. Anthony Donovan brings Oscar Wildes school chums, as well as the enigmatic woman, to life with this performance of one of the Irish wits short stories, a selection from the Lord Arthur Saviles Crime and Other Stories collection. Members Reviews: some of these stories are timeless I really enjoyed most of the stories in this collection. If nothing else they give a window on the popular English perceptions about Americans of the time as well as some (again, for the time) biting satire on English middle-class mores and attitudes. I often re-listen to this collection when I need an antidote to the reverentional treatment that late Victorian England gets on PBS, especially Masterpiece Theatre -- which I enjoy, but come on, in reality the streets were full of horse dung and the upper-class treated the lower classes like they were not human. All in all, well worth the price.

Set at the beginning of the 20th century it follows the fortunes and interrelations between three family groups of differing backgrounds and outlooks. A decision that triggers much of the novel's ensuing conflict, scandal and tragedy. Members Reviews: A level memories I studied Howard's End for A levels in 1978. How wonderful to rediscover it. Title: Mrs. Molesworth's Ghost Stories Subtitle: Four More Uncanny Tales by Mary Louisa Molesworth Author: Mary Louisa Molesworth Narrator: Susie Berneis, Robert Bethune Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 44 mins Language: English Release date: 06-26-12 Publisher: Freshwater Seas Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: In this set of "Uncanny Tales," Mary Louisa Molesworth deftly makes us feel the shiver of ghostly mystery without actually giving us a ghost! Or, to put it another way, she's interested in a different kind of ghostly presence. In "The Man with the Cough", it is the ghostly presence of a secret agent, and the ghostly experience of events that seem like a dream, but have real-world consequences. In "Halfway Between the Stiles", it is the ghostly presence of old memories of love that will not die away, and again, the real world responds. In "Will Not Take Place", it is a man who almost becomes a ghost, so thoroughly does he cut himself off from friends, family and the woman he loves. And in "The Clock that Struck Thirteen", a woman finds that the man she loves can become a ghostly presence, influencing her life behind the scenes. Molesworth makes you shiver, but she also makes you laugh, and she even makes you think about the mysteries of the world.

Title: The Poor Relation's Story Subtitle: A Dickens Christmas Remembrance Author: Charles Dickens Narrator: Deaver Brown Format: Unabridged Length: 26 mins Language: English Release date: 03-19-12 Publisher: Simply Media Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: This is a Dickens Christmas story of remembrance, in the tradition of people remembering their past. In this case, the poor relation at a holiday feast given by a rich relation tells the story of his life, dominated by his being his own worst enemy through being soft and credulous as opposed to hard and sharp. The rich relation funds him in a meager amount and Michael, the poor relation, thinks he should not go first in anything, including telling stories around the Christmas fire, but is encouraged to do so. First he tells his story of loss and betrayal. Then he tells a gloriously happy one about his castle and in the end, the rich relation makes a pointed comment and the poor relation admits it is all "in the air", implying the first story was the true one. One story reality, the other a dreamworld, both together in his life. Dickens at his poignant best. An American voice used as a narrator by listener request. Members Reviews: Plot and Structure Essay Michael, the main character in, "The Poor Relation's Story" by Charles Dickens, is a male between the ages of 59 and 60. However, the exposition is scattered throughout the story. Michael and his family view Michael as nobody's enemy but his own, which is the complication that begins the growth of the conflict. Michael feels as though he has failed at everything; his business, love life, and his expectations that others had for him have all been unsuccessful. Michael lives on a limited income, he resides in a little room in lodging on Clapham Road and spends his days wandering solitarily about, going from coffee shops to relations or acquaintances homes, to dinner, and then back to his room. Michael seems to be a solitary man, who is lonely and lacks self-esteem. His only companion is his first cousins son, Little Frank, whom is a lot like Michael. Michael and Little Frank have a good bond and would spend their time happily together, both mutually affectionate towards one another without even having to say much to one another. However, Little Franks mother contested to their closeness, which I believe to be the major conflict in the story. Little Frank's mother tells Michael that he "can see him [Little Frank] from a distance . . . without his [Little Frank] seeing me [Michael]." Michael's only non-valuable treasure that he has, which is a miniature of a bright faced boy, is his dying wish to give to Little Frank, along with a note with advice and warning of the consequences of being nobody's enemy but your own. A minor character, John, whom hosts the Christmas party, in which all of the "respected members of the family" attend, is rich and well respected. It is awkward for Michael for the family to beg him to start the "round of stories" by the campfire, for Michael is hesitant yet does as he is asked; only stating that his confession will surprise the entire family. Michael's confession is the climax of the story, when Michael was living with his rich uncle Chill, he proclaimed his love for Christiana whom was the daughter of a friend that Chill knew well.

You may wake up with a shiver, but you'll also wake wake up feeling thoughtful, musing on how the mysteries of love, compassion, and memory can extend themselves into the realm of the supernatural. In "Lady Farquhar's Old Lady", she explores how women fallen on hard times never quite lose their attachment to their homes, even in death. In "Witnessed by Two", she lets us see how the deepest connections of the spirit can form a visible bridge over thousands of miles when love's need for love will not allow itself to go unspoken. In "Unexplained", she shares with us how travelers happen across an old connection to an old mystery, and it changes their lives forever, while remaining forever mysterious. And lastly, in "The Rippling Train", again she takes us on a visit into lives whose love crosses the bridge of time and distance, even if only for a moment, and even though leaving much unseen and unknown. Benson Narrator: Greg Wagland Format: Unabridged Length: 28 mins Language: English Release date: 11-15-11 Publisher: Magpie Audio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Taking a winter holiday in a splendid resort in the Swiss Alps our hero finds himself billeted in a surprisingly large room, furnished with two beds. He checks with the man at the bureau, but theres no mistake: its all his, a veritable snip at 12 francs a night! What a stroke of luck! And what could possibly connect this alpine idyll with Boston, Massachusetts? E. F. Benson is well known for his Mapp and Lucia novels but his ghost and supernatural stories are marvellous jewels, combining elegant writing and moments of blood-curdling horror. Here Greg Wagland narrates one of the best of them, for Magpie Audio. Members Reviews: Too Much Like MRJames Oh Whistle & i'l Come ... Far too much like M R James, Oh Whistle & I'l Come .. so makes this not 'original' but 'based on' other peoples works. Not particularly scary nor very much atmosphere. Quite disappointing. Chilling New to E.F.Benson, but a great lover of ghost stories, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It has echos of 'Oh Whistle and I'll come to you' by M.R. James and others but adequately holds its own. Set in the Swiss Alps, it tells the story of a gentleman staying in a hotel who is snowed in while heavy storms set in. For 12 francs our gentleman finds himself in a huge room which actually has two beds in it, a luxury indeed! What follows is a series of impressions, dreams, half seen visions and sounds as if another guest may be inhabiting the room, in the other bed... Brilliantly narrated by Greg Wagland, this is a charming tale, containing suitable spine-chilling moments. Highly recommended.

The Withered Arm Audiobook by Thomas Hardy

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/896/]]> to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Withered Arm Author: Thomas Hardy Narrator: Emma Hignett Format: Unabridged Length: 58 mins Language: English Release date: 11-18-11 Publisher: Saland Publishing Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: The most famous of Hardy's short stories from the collection Wessex Tales. 'The Withered Arm' blends suspense and gothic elements - and witchcraft - as well as troubled relationships between men and women. Members Reviews: Great Collection Thomas Hardy is best known for novels and poems but was also one of England's best short story writers. Besides mastering the form itself, Hardy used short stories as a training ground for themes and plot devices that often ended up in the novels, making them all the more interesting for fans and scholars. This has nine stories spread over about 350 pages - about a sixth of his total -, including some of his best and best-known. The selection is strong and representative, proceeding chronologically from Hardy's first published story until 1888's Wessex Tales, his first collection. Fans of the novels will certainly want these, but whether they will want this collection is an open question, as most of the stories are widely available. One plus is that it has two - "Destiny and a Blue Cloak" and "The Thieves Who Couldn't Help Sneezing" that are hard to find. They are very early and minor, but fans will certainly appreciate them. Perhaps more importantly, there is a wealth of bonus material: a general introduction stating the purpose of this Penguin Hardy series; a Hardy chronology; a map of Hardy's fictional Wessex; a scholarly introduction with substantial background on the stories and some critical analysis; suggestions for further reading; a history of the texts; detailed endnotes; a history of Hardy short stories; the original illustrations; and a glossary illuminating the heavy use of dialect and other unusual words. Those wanting more stories must of course look elsewhere, but one would have to search very hard for one of comparable length with as much bonus material. One oddity is that, in contrast to nearly all editions, the texts are from first volume publication rather than final edits. This may deter some, but hard-cores and scholars will probably welcome the distinction, and the notes in any event detail changes. The stories vary in quality and significance. "Destiny" is Hardy's first real published story and is in many ways the blueprint for not only later short stories but much of his other work. Like more famous work, it has a female protagonist and focuses on forbidden love, but it is truly remarkable how many themes and philosophical concerns later fleshed out are already here. Hardy's interest in fate, chance, irony, and the universe's profound indifference toward humanity are on clear display. Much of the characterization and strong sense of place he became known for are also present. So is Hardy's penchant for complex plots; it is near-astonishing how much he could pack into a short work. This is also a good example of how he used shorts to test elements for novels, as he reused the major plot twist in his novel The Hand of Ethelberta. "Destiny" may lack the grand, tragic sweep of Hardy's best work but certainly has it in embryo; this would be one of most writers' best pieces. A children's story with an obvious moral and some humor, "The Thieves" is probably the most light-hearted work from a writer synonymous with dark ones.

Title: The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place Author: Arthur Conan Doyle Narrator: David Ian Davies Format: Unabridged Length: 35 mins Language: English Release date: 09-23-11 Publisher: One Voice Recordings Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place: Evidence of murder, ransacked ancient mummies, giving away a beloved dog, and a horse race upon which a man's life and future depend are just four of the elements of this Holmes story, making it one of the most memorable (and chilling) cases in the Sherlockian Canon. Critic Reviews: "The most incredible one-person audio you have heard. Has to be heard to be believed. David Ian Davies creates theatre in a book." (Charles Prepolec, one of the most respected Sherlockians) Members Reviews: Another good mystery short story! In this story, Head trainer John Mason from Shoscombe Old Place, a racing stable in Berkshire, comes to Holmes about his master, Sir Robert Norberton. Mason thinks he has gone mad. Sir Robertâs sister, Lady Beatrice Falder, owns Shoscombe, but it will revert to her late husbandâs brother when she dies. The stable has a horse, Shoscombe Prince, who Sir Robert hopes will win the Derby. He would be out of debt if that actually happened. Mason is not quite sure what he wants Holmes to investigate, but a number of odd changes have happened at the stable: Why has Lady Beatrice suddenly forgone her usual habit of stopping to greet her favourite horse? Why does she just ride on by in her carriage? Why has Sir Robert become so wild-eyed lately? Why has he given his sisterâs dog away to a neighbourhood innkeeper? Why does he go to the old crypt at night, and who is that man that he meets there? Why have burnt human bones been found in the furnace at Shoscombe? Holmes decides to investigate on the spot. He and Dr. Watson go to Berkshire posing as anglers and learn some interesting things. The keeper of the inn where they are staying is the one who now has Lady Beatriceâs dog, and it is quite an expensive breed, one that an innkeeper ordinarily could never afford. With the innkeeperâs permission, Holmes takes the dog for a walk, and goes to Shoscombe, where he releases it as Lady Beatriceâs carriage comes out of the gate. The dog dashes forward enthusiastically at first, but then flees in terror. Then, even though a maid and Lady Beatrice are supposedly the only two people in the carriage, it is a male voice that yells âDrive on!â Then there is the crypt. John Mason observes that a heap of bones there earlier is now gone. Holmes finds a coffin with a fresh, swathed body in it. Just then, Sir Robert arrives, catching Holmes and Watson in the act. After Holmes makes it plain that he has deduced most of the odd goings-on, Sir Robert invites him and Watson back to the house and explains everything. About a week earlier, Lady Beatrice died of dropsy, and Sir Robert felt compelled to keep the fact secret so that the creditors would not swoop down on Shoscombe before he had a chance to win the Derby and pay off all his debts. He and the maidâs husband hid the body in the crypt, but also found that they had to dispose of an older body â in the furnace. This same man also dressed up in Lady Beatriceâs clothes and took her place in the carriage each day. The dog knew what had happened and might have given the game away if its noise had aroused suspicion. Holmes refers the matter to the police, but the story ends happily.

Está claro que el pobre está demasiado influenciado por la ignorancia y supersticiones locales. ¿o no.....? This collection brings together four of his most ingenious tales, all of which involve one character playing a prank on the others. The results range from the comic to the macabre but all are brilliantly narrated with Sakis superb ironic wit. The Stampeding of Lady Bastable. Mrs. Sangrail is determined to offload her wayward son Clovis onto Lady Bastable for six days while she takes a trip to Scotland. Is desperation she resorts to cunning bribery, but Clovis has other ideas and devises an ingenious scheme to thwart his mothers plans. Adrian. When Mrs. Mebberley decides to take Adrian on a tour of Europe, she little suspects just how much trouble one young practical joker can cause. The party finds itself fleeing from one hotel to the next as Adrians pranks leave a trail of mayhem. The Open Window. Framton Nuttel pays an unannounced call on Mrs. Sappleton and finds himself in the midst of a macabre spectacle which is not as it seems. A strange revelation by Mrs. Sappletons niece causes only embarrassment at first but then a chilling realization dawns. The Unrest-Cure. When the prematurely middle-aged J.P. Huddle is recommended to take an unrest-cure by a friend, he little realizes that the other passenger in the railway compartment, the prank-loving Clovis, will take this as a personal challenge. The havoc which Cloviss grisly and at times shocking practical joke causes is beyond anything that the sleepy hamlet of Tilfield has seen before.

Laura is supposed to be in charge, but has trouble with the workers who appear to know better, and her mother (Mrs. Sheridan) has ordered lilies to be delivered for the party without Laura's approval. While Laura believes the party should be called off, neither Jose nor their mother agrees. The party is a success, and later Mrs. Sheridan decides it would be good to bring a basket full of leftovers to the Scotts' house. She summons Laura to do so. Laura is shown into the poor neighbours house by Mrs. Scott's sister, and then sees the widow and her late husband's corpse. The sight of his dead body brings her to tears, and she runs off back to her own house, where she falls sobbing into her brother's arms.

However, when confronted with three suitors, among them the dashing Sergeant Troy, she shows a reckless capriciousness which threatens the stability of the whole community. Published in 1874, and an immediate best seller, Far From the Madding Crowd established Thomas Hardy as one of Britain's foremost novelists. © and (P)1997 NAXOS AudioBooks Ltd. Editorial Reviews: A vivid classic set in a remote rural corner of early Victorian England features conflicting values, class dichotomy, opposing principles, and romantic drama. Never ceasing to be relevant, Hardy's classic endures as Bathsheba Everdene waivers between wielding her feminine wiles to secure love and marriage and maintaining her stoic independence and self-reliance. Neville Jason narrates with an upper-crust accent, then deftly shifts to the characters' distinctive singsong Cornish speech and earthy expressions. He adapts well to the tones of women and the elderly. The audiobook's musical interludes, while striking the moods reflected in scenes, are slightly too strident - but are not a distraction from the novel's fatalistic turmoil and picturesque descriptions. Members Reviews: Well worth listening to This recording is very well narrated and certainly captures the mood and style of Thomas Hardy well. The only negative point is the introductory music is a little over powering to the narration and this repeats incidently throughout the book, however this really doesn't impact upon the overall recording and I throughly recommend this version. First Class Narration Super Irritating Music I only listened to this book to hear a good read by Mr. Jason, but the music kept intruding itself on the story and at times the music was over the narration itself. Excellent Hardy novel.

Title: Tess of the D'Urbervilles Author: Thomas Hardy Narrator: Imogen Stubbs Format: Abridged Length: 4 hrs Language: English Release date: 10-26-00 Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 31 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: In Tess Durbeyfield, Thomas Hardy created one of the most tragic heroines of English literature. Against the backdrop of a changing and haunting landscape, Tess battles for her freedom from penury and abuse. The story of her heroism and fortitude, as her destiny is relentlessly played out, is moving and unforgettable. Members Reviews: Tragic Tess This is one of the great English novels, probably among the first five in distinction among the novels of the late 19th century. It is certainly Hardy's most accomplished novel. "Tess" is set in Hardy's version of the Wessex region of England, where, for example, the city of Dorchester becomes Casterbridge. This is the story of Tess Durbeyfield. The Durbeyfields used to be known as the d'Urberviiles, centuries before, when they were rich and powerful. As with almost all of Hardy's novels, the evocation of the boggy hill country of southern England is so closely intertwined with nature, that one begins to smell the heady aromas of the countryside. Coincidentally, Roman Polanski's finest film is "Tess", Nastassia Kinski is the perfect Tess, Polanski shows us the innocence of the girl, how its purity is the reason for her downfall. The scene in which she bites into a strawberry is the ultimate seduction scene for PG audiences. Eye-opening, tragic story told in an engaging style. No wonder it's a classic! This is the first Thomas Hardy novel I've read and I think I'm hooked. Will definitely read his others. Excellent writing which really draws you into the story. Loved it. The entire time you're reading it, you feel compelled to rescue Tess from her situation and to scream to the whole hypocritical Victorian world, "It's not her fault!" Near the end of the book, Hardy builds up to such suspense that I found myself holding my breath and praying that things turn out well for Tess. Hardy gives the reader a view of England in 1800's that, in my opinion, is probably a lot more accurate than we would like to believe. And I also think his style is easier to read than Charles Dickens. I highly recommend this book. I have ordered the 1998 DVD from Amazon as it had rave reviews as being true to the book. Can't wait to watch it. Tragic classic! Thomas Hardy is a contemporary of Charles Dickens, and his writing is similar. The themes are quite modern for that time, as the protagonist is an atheist or at least agnostic. As a Christian, I was somewhat disappointed in the way my Faith was portrayed, and the story became rather melodramatic as it progressed (probably due to the method of serial publishing in order to retain readers and increase sales) but it was an entertaining tale nevertheless. What a great read! What a great read! I'm not a Hardy scholar, but I would venture to guess there would be a mention of Hardy's integration of his characters with the natural world. This adds another dimension to the complex character of Tess. The book is suspenseful. I've never read it before and all throughout there is tension as you keep asking, "what is going to happen to Tess"? I t is now in my top five books of all times list. Review of Tess of the d'Urbervilles I first read this novel a long, long time ago, and now have revisited it on my Kindle.

In Stevenson's day, they were sometimes called "resurrectionists" - but he calls them "Body-Snatchers" and tells a grisly, memorable story about them. A master of terror and suspense, Stevenson lets his imagination explore the depths of human superstitions. Also included on this recording are the stories "Isle of Voices" and "The Waif Woman." He, perhaps, may profit by my misfortune. My own case, I know, is hopeless, and I am now in some measure prepared to meet my fate." (P)2009 One Voice Recordings Editorial Reviews: A promising young doctor meets a short, yellow-faced old man, who promises "freedom and influence". That one seemingly chance introduction begins a series of increasingly unbelievable events in his life that culminate in a fateful, eternal, and damning swap. David Ian Davies performs H. G. Welles' masterful short tale of supernatural evil in tones that flow engagingly between melancholy and malevolent. Written as a warning to others who might "profit" by the storytellers misfortune, it is instead a harrowing fable of the villainy to which science may be put.

Title: Voices of the Ghost IV Subtitle: The Canterville Ghost - "A classic comic ghost story by Oscar Wilde" Author: Oscar Wilde Narrator: Susie Berneis, Robert Bethune Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 8 mins Language: English Release date: 01-15-09 Publisher: Freshwater Seas Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Now along comes the Otis family, confident brash Americans who really aren't impressed by an old British ghost. What's a poor spirit to do? Only the young daughter of the family is sympathetic, and only she can help him solve his problem once and for all. Oscar Wilde's witty text and clever story-telling will make this one of your favorite humorous ghost stories. Members Reviews: British ghost vs American politician An amusing story in typical Wilde style of an ancient English ghost confronting a stolid down-to-earth American family who refuse to be frightened by his outlandish antics. The despondent ghost finally decides to return to the fields of the dead and is aided in this last venture by Georgina Otis, the lovely daughter of the American politician. In return, he gives her a box of priceless jewels which become the topic of all the high society dos. Written in ornate, nineteenth century English, the book is a treat for those interested in the beauties of the English language. However, the story which is sparkling and witty in the first half begins to pall, in fact, get rather tedious and overly sentimental in the second. All said and done, the book is worth a read if one can tolerate Wilde's wordiness. A charming fairy-tale A pleasant fancy by Oscar Wilde, in the vein of his other somewhat sad fairy-tales. Reminded me of "The Happy Prince" in its general tone. Quite short... I'm not show how they ever made a movie from it. Amusing, though not his best work. Oscar Wilde, The Canterville Ghost (Public Domain Books, 1906) Oscar Wilde's supernaturally comedic classic has been made into any number of movies (and despite this, I have somehow only seen a low-budget Polish version that was made for television, but which is quite enjoyable), so I've heard about it roughly ten thousand times, but I had never actually gotten round to reading it until now. It's not as spiked with quotable lines as The Picture of Dorian Gray or The Importance of Being Earnest, but it's still snappy and fun, until it's ruined by a characteristically moral ending (tacked on, one assumes, in order to make the book palatable to Victorian audiences). Useless ending aside, however, it's still fun, and worth reading; a short introduction to Wilde that gives you a good feel for his writing. *** Funny at first, compassionate at the end.... When you think of a ghost story, you probably think it's going to be scary, but this definitely was an enjoyable, funny yet compassionate short book. This isn't a book about the paranormal and regardless if you believe in it or not, this book is about feelings!!! For the price of free, I'd recommend for anyone to read! Hauntingly beautiful This is a classic story in true Oscar Wilde wit and flair. It's both hautning and funny. It's a fairy tale for all ages. In this story a young American girl helps to free the tormented spirit that haunts an old English castle. It's very well written and a beautiful tale for all ages. Let me start by saying I LOVE Oscar Wilde. I LOVE his work. Love it.

Wells also wrote engaging works of short fiction, most dealing with the strange, the unsettling, and the unknown. In this performance, Ralph Cosham brings 4 of Wells's stories to vivid life. "The Cone" is a shocking tale of revenge, "The Diamond Maker" tells of a fortune that might have been, "The Country of the Blind" tells of a man with sight who tries unsuccessfully to be king in a valley where everyone is blind, and the haunting classic "The Door in the Wall" captures the pathos of lost youth. (P) and ©1993 Commuter's Library Critic Reviews: "Whatever his message, the 'Red-Headed Stranger' conveys his thoughts in the same friendly, endearing manner that has made his songs part of the fabric of American life." (Publishers Weekly) Members Reviews: Avoid this Don't read unless you like horrible explicit descriptions of people being cremated alive, etc. This is hack stuff for pulp magazines of the day. Jacobs Narrator: Walter Covell Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 24 mins Language: English Release date: 10-23-08 Publisher: Jimcin Recordings Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 4 votes Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Stories included are: "The Lady of the Barge" "The Monkey's Paw" "The Well" "Bill's Paper Chase" "Cupbard Love" "In the Library" "Captain Rogers" "A Tiger's Skin" "A Mixed Proposal" "An Adulteration Act" "The Golden Venture" "Three at Table" Editorial Reviews: W. W. Jacobs greatest legacy remains his occult horror story "The Monkeys Paw", the grotesque talisman of the title offering its owner three wishes, albeit with unintended consequences. Ironically, however, the great majority of Jacobs short stories are humorous, lighthearted affairs, often celebrating saucy English sailors. Performer Walter Covell exhibits remarkable vocal dexterity as he weaves together seemingly disparate threads - horror and comedy - into this rich and varied tapestry of storytelling. Covell alternately conjures up the dark, foreboding cadence of an Edgar Allen Poe tale one moment, and the jaunty good humor of a Bertie Wooster the next - indeed, Jacobs was a favorite of fellow British humorist P. G. Wodehouse. This classic collection features 12 short stories, including "The Well", "The Monkeys Paw", and the title piece. Members Reviews: A Drop of Picante Sauce Walter Covell rough almost harsh voice leaves one feeling as though the narrator has spent or misspent a lifetime on the open seas. He tells these stories like an old mariner at the dockside pub. I had mixed reactions to these short stories. Almost none came out the way one expects. In one case, a murderer walks away unpunished; further the reader (listener) cheers and the tiger story is absolutely fun, well at the end. My three favorites are: The Lady of the Barge although, I am not exactly sure what was resolved, it was an interesting boat ride, I think the guy got the girl; A Mixed Proposal where the lover is cheated out of his lady by his lady and his rival (I cheered for the rival); Captain Rogers was alluded to above as a story where the murderer walks free undetected. The Monkey's Paw and The Well are a bit macabre for my sensitive nature and tender heart. Nevertheless, there other natures and hearts which will find them engrossing, even entertaining. Title: Told After Supper Subtitle: Ghost Stories on Christmas Eve Author: Jerome K. Jerome Narrator: Roy Macready Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 1 min Language: English Release date: 01-15-18 Publisher: Spiders' House Audio Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Jerome K. Jerome is known of course for his novels that tell of the hilarious adventures of "Three Men" particularly the one here they are "in a Boat"! The stories Told After Supper, related by the guests at a Christmas Eve party, are about ghosts and have all the wit and whimsy of J.K.J.'s more famous works. Members Reviews: This book should be a Christmas Eve tradition. The Christmas Eve ghost story is a time-honored English tradition, which includes such classics as Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." While I love Dickens, I would suggest giving Scrooge a rest this Christmas Eve and reading "Told After Supper" instead. For one thing, it is much shorter. It is also much funnier. If you enjoy the humor of Mark Twain, P.G. Wodehouse, and Douglas Adams, you will enjoy Jerome K. Jerome. A marvelous read that I am sorry has been so ... A marvelous read that I am sorry has been so overshadowed by the wonder Dickens classic. I am keen to see a return of the Yuletide Ghost Story tradition and no such experience would be complete without Jerome K. Jerome's collection of stories. Funny It the best $4.99 I ever spent. I had to leave the room where my wife and daughter were watching TV. I was making to much noise laughing. What a great little book. Now I know what they meant in the song "Itâs The Most Wonderful Time Of Year" when they sang "There'll be scary ghost stories, And tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago". What a great humorist Jerome K. Jerome is. I must have more of his books. Victorian Holiday Classic Jerome K. Jerome will make you laugh out loud. Told After Supper is a humorous and entertaining book. It is in the Victorian style when ghost stories were often told at Christmas. The book is a quick read, and could be read in one sitting. Told after supper is going to be a traditional Christmas read for me now. A Christrmas treat I dearly love this book. Someone gave me an antique copy when I was in grade school and it's wonderful now to have it on my Kindle. For readers who don't know Jerome K. Jerome, this is an amusing introduction to a very droll writer who was also an acute observer of his time. And it's a quick read for aficionados of Christmas ghost stories.

I found this book to be a captivating read with great characters and I was drawn in from the first page. For me it was both reflective and poignant in that as a 30-something I could relate to many of the complex emotional aspects and life choices made by the characters, which was both sobering and bitter-sweet. I found it surprising that a male writer understood the female psyche so well. Humorous relief and complex interwoven story-lines with unforeseen twists made this book very enjoyable and hard to put down. I'm looking forward to reading more books by this talented author ! Intelligent Thriller Cleverly plotted thriller involving real suspense and well drawn characters. A compelling story that was full of surprises and very hard to put down until the end. One of the most exciting new fiction books I have encountered in a long long time.. I look forward to more from this writer. Very good read. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was suspenseful, captivating and hard to put down. Very good read. A real page turner This book was full of unsuspecting twists and turns and was very entertaining from beginning to end. I can't wait to read something else by Nathan Field. We have a housing estate which appears posh and secure ... We have a housing estate which appears posh and secure with thousands of tenants. We are dealing in the story with just three of them. Claire, Dennis and Trixie. Each of them is a story in itself. Claire feels there is an intruder in her flat - things are moved about, Dennis accidentally takes ecstacy pills thinking they are headache tablets and Trixie is faced with a surprising visit from her cleaner who reveals that Trixie's partner has been also her cleaner's partner for sometime. Taken over a period of twenty four hours (which was a bit too crammed in with action for just twenty four hours) we look at the three lives and the twists and turns which happen with far reaching consequences. This is definitely not a mediocre day and not routine and you are kept wondering what on earth is going to happen next. The characters are complex and not what they seem with the exception of Dennis who was completely out of his depth!

'The Stolen Body' tells the story of two men who are experimenting with mind over matter. On prearranged evenings they sit in their own rooms, two miles apart, and each attempts to make himself apparate in the room of the other. One evening one of the men, Mr. Bessel, succeeds in making himself visible to his friend. The friend rushes across town to discuss the success of the experiment - but to his amazement Mr. Bessel's rooms are in disarray, and the man himself has disappeared. Later that evening he finds Bessel on a London street attacking passersby, using his cane as a club. Mr. Bessel attacks and injures him before continuing his reign of terror along the streets of London. Yet within a short time, Mr. Bessel has disappeared completely, and the mystery is complete. But where is he? And what has brought about this terrible change in him? Members Reviews: Public domain, so NOT worth the cost for this 28-page story! Eh. Not very interesting. A researcher of supernatural phenomena manages to astral project, but finds himself locked out of his body while a malicious spirit uses it to run wild in the streets. Little else to say. We do get an explanation of the event from the researcher, but it's not terribly interesting. Mainly it just seems like Wells is patting himself on the back as he writes his own theories on the supernatural. This story is in the public domain. I listened to the audio production from Librivox.

'The Plattner Story' is the strange tale of Gottfried Plattner, a modern languages teacher at a private school in England who, while conducting a chemistry experiment, accidently causes an explosion. The results of the explosion are mysterious. First, Plattner disappears completely. Not a trace of him remains, despite the damage to the school being fairly minimal. For nine days nothing is seen or heard of him, although many people locally have strange and very similar dreams about him. Second, after nine days Plattner reappears in a very unusual and equally explosive manner. Third, when he reappears he has been oddly transformed. His internal organs are all reversed. He is now left- instead of right-handed and writes from right to left. Moreover, the tale of what happened to him during the nine days of his absence is quite extraordinary.

Title: Markheim Author: Robert Louis Stevenson Narrator: Alan Weyman Format: Unabridged Length: 45 mins Language: English Release date: 09-01-16 Publisher: Spoken Realms Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: Stevenson's brilliantly macabre yet profound story of a man seemingly trapped in evil. Members Reviews: Markheim In my opinion this is a great short story, where there is the ABC of a short story plus religious dogmas with references to a famous play written by William Shakespeare. The contrast between the dealer and Markheim is immediate and powerful, this is configurable by the exchange of their discourses. In the first pages of this tale, there is a reference, or better a similitude to Ebenezer Scrooge (Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens) regarding two key points, the emotional transformation after the supernatural visitations of Jacob Marley, and the ghosts of Christmases, past, present, and yet to come, and most importantly the lack of the Christmas spirit, a ploy for to introduce a fundamental Christian's dogma i.e. the equation that the money are the devil's excrement; this concept has been introduced inside the plot using the phrase at the beginning and at the end: The Stock Exchange. In my opinion "the visitor" is the conscience of Markheim, that has been absorbed and corrupted by his madness due to his thirsty of money. Thinking profoundly on this character, I would like to mention that there is a clear reference to a famous play written by William Shakespeare, i.e. Macbeth for instance the "Banquet Scene" and the emersion of his madness. The main cause for their homicides, is the epic conflict between their free will and their conscience, and their fear of being punished by the divine and terrestrial laws. In conclusion Stevenson even in a short story is able to philosophising. In this case I can assume that as readers we have been led to believe and eventually say that the finance is a sin. Cheers Italo Take some time for Markheim In classic Stevenson style, Markheim explores the very nature of man and his (our) double-sided conscience. Stevenson demonstrates his mastery of language and writing by skillfully slowing down the scene and allowing the reader to see and feel the ticking of the clocks and the passage of time - in the room and on the street. Harkening to the old cliche of the devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, Markheim must examine his morality, his deeds, and battle his conscience for the sake of his very life and soul. This is a quick, and easy read. The vocabulary and syntax are not too deep and the pace of the story makes it truly engaging. The story is in the public domain and is most certainly available online but at this price, the Kindle editon is a bargain indeed. I've read it again and again, and I find something new every time.

A Warning to the Curious Audiobook by M. R. James

James Narrator: Roy Macready Format: Unabridged Length: 39 mins Language: English Release date: 08-30-16 Publisher: Spiders' House Audio Genres: Classics, British Literature Publisher's Summary: M. R. James (1862-1936) was provost of King's College, Cambridge, and Eton College. He was a highly regarded scholar and academic in his time but today is remembered for his ghost stories, which are considered among the finest in the genre. Here is one of them: "A Warning to the Curious". Members Reviews: Outrageous! Even though this is the name of one of M.R. James' beloved collections of ghost stories, what is being sold here is no collection. Instead, it's the sale--for ten bucks, no less!--of a single short story of about five pages that is in the public domain and may be freely found by searching the Internet. Not only that, but the copy is full of print-to-etext typos. In other words, it's a scam. This is shameful, and if it and all the other five- or six-page "ebooks" aren't taken down, they will be very likely to drive Kindle readers away from using the Kindle Store. A haunted crown and a stolen prayer book "A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories" (1925) is a very satisfying volume of M. R. James's (MRJ's) supernatural stories. However, it only contains six of his short stories. Instead of purchasing this volume, you might want to consider one of his more complete collections. Ash-Tree Press's "A Pleasing Terror" (2001), contains the complete and heavily annotated supernatural writings of MRJ, and no true Monty fan should be without it. The next best collection, "Casting the Runes and Other Stories" edited by Michael Cox, contains most of MRJ's supernatural stories and is quite a bit cheaper than "A Pleasing Terror." The following stories are included in "A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories": "The Haunted Doll's House"--This story was written for the library of the Queen's Doll's House, and somewhat resembles MRJ's "The Mezzotint" from the earlier "Ghost Stories of an Antiquary." Mr. Dillet buys an unusual doll house in the Strawberry Gothic fashion from an acquaintance, and sets it up in his bedroom. "It was quite six feet long, including the Chapel or Oratory...and the stable on the right." The house is completely furnished and has several inhabitants, including "a gentleman and lady in blue satin and brocade, respectively...and a white haired old gentleman in a long linen night-dress and cap." When the house seems to come alive, it tells a ghastly tale of murder and revenge from beyond the grave. "The Uncommon Prayer-book"-- Mr. Davidson strikes up a conversation with an old gentleman on a train and is invited to view a disused Chapel. MRJ engulfs his reader in quaint British dialects in this story of a prayer book that would not stay shut. "A Neighbour's Landmark"-- A gentleman spends a wet August afternoon in his host's library and discovers an old pamphlet with two lines from a country song, "That which walks in Betton Wood/ Knows why it walks or why it cries." When the weather clears, he explores the part of his friend's property that used to be called 'Betton Wood.' "A View from a Hill"--A pair of field-glasses made by an old and rather unlikeable watch-maker reveal peculiar landscape features, including a gibbet and something hanging from it.

A party of friends exchange ghost stories on Christmas Eve; but everything may not be quite as it seems....

Her stories often seem to take the form of a stream of consciousness. 'A Haunted House' tells the story of a ghostly couple flitting from one room to the next in search of their hidden treasure...but what is it? Members Reviews: Terrible I was tricked!! There's nothing here the description is wrong. Don't spend your money on this piece of irrelevant carp. It's just things about the author literally like 4 pages I'm not sure how I feel about this story The flow of the story reads almost like poetry, and sounds pretty, but I didn't feel like there was a lot of substance to the story. ... If the book's narrated by Cathy ... ... If the book's narrated by Cathy Dobson, don't bother wasting a credit on it. If you don't believe me, listen to the audio sample. The inflection in her narrative is so off-putting, it's impossible to listen to. There are a handful of books I would have purchased -- if only they were narrated by anyone other than her.
